Wireless sensor and body area networks (WSN and WBAN respectively) have been seen as a future way to monitor humans’ psycho-physiological signs remotely. There are a number of standards that could be used for building WBAN sytems. However, wireless UWB networks based on IEEE 802.15.4a offer the advantages of a large frequency range and low power spectral density, making it suitable for both WSNs and WBANs used for medical applications. The technology has matured sufficiently that it can be used to develop products for the marketplace. This book presents how the IEEE802.15.4-2011 (former IEEE802.15.4a) can be used in wireless body area networks (WBAN) for healthcare and welfare related applications. It gives a short overview on the IEEE802.15.4 family and then gives details of IEEE802.15.4-2011 based solutions. With the advances in small and low-cost radio transceivers and RF front-ends development, the possibility of applying ubiquitous and non-invasive sensors integrated into user’s daily clothing and living activities seems more feasible. The ability to share data increases the usefulness of personal information devices, providing features not possible with independent isolated devices. Current wireless sensor solutions are limited in that they do not provide the means to overcome obstacles and shadowing of propagating radio waves. Thus for reliable communications an increase in power consumption is required, reducing battery life. This book addresses the limitations outlined above by designing efficient and compact antenna systems. These systems will be cooperative and also aware of the surrounding environment and neighboring units, providing efficient and low power wireless connectivity for personal area network (PAN) and body area network (BAN) applications. Analysis of wearable antenna design and performance Addresses the Influence of body-worn antennas on radio channels and radio device performance from a power and error rate perspective. Cooperative networking principles applied to body area networks, showing the pros and cons of such concepts Real life case scenarios using ECG sample signals for potential application to healthcare monitoring.

When choosing the technology options to develop a wireless sensor network (WSN), it is vital that their performance levels can be assessed for the type of application intended. This book describes the different technology options – MAC protocols, routing protocols, localisation and data fusion techniques – and provides the means to numerically measure their performance, whether by simulation, mathematical models or experimental test beds. Case studies, based on the authors’ direct experience of implementing wireless sensor networks, describe the design methodology and the type of measurements used, together with samples of the performance measurements attained. The book will enable you to answer vital questions such as: * How long will my network remain alive given the amount of sensing required of it? * For how long should I set the sleeping state of my motes? * How many sensors should I distribute to meet the expected requirements of the application? * What type of throughput should I expect as a function of the number of nodes deployed and the radio interface chosen (whether it be Bluetooth or Zigbee)? * How is the Packet Error Rate of my Zigbee motes affected by the selection of adjacent frequency sub bands in the ISM 2.4GHz band? * How is the localisation precision dependant on the number of nodes deployed in a corridor? Communications and signal processing engineers, researchers and graduate students working in wireless sensor networks will find this book an invaluable practical guide to this important technology. "This book gives a proper balance between theory and application; it is a book for those R&D engineers that want to appreciate both why, how and in which domains Wireless Sensor Networks can be best applied." - Fabio Bellifemine, Telecom Italia "This book is a thorough and accessible exposition on wireless sensor networks with a good balance between theory and practice; it is valuable for both students and practicing engineers, and is an essential addition for engineering libraries." - Professor Moe Win, Associate Professor at the Laboratory for Information and Decision Systems (LIDS), Massachusetts Institute of Technology *Only book to examine wireless sensor network technologies and assess their performance capabilities against possible applications *Enables the engineer to choose the technology that will give the best performance for the intended application *Case studies, based on the authors’ direct experience of implementing wireless sensor networks, describe the design methodology and the type of measurements used, together with samples of the performance measurements attained

LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the 3GPP's (3rd Generation Partnership Project) new standard and accompanying technologies that mobile network operators such as ATT, Verizon and TeliaSonera are adopting for their networks. To move to higher-speed networks that can cater to customer demand for mobile broadband multimedia applications, the 3GPP has developed the latest LTE-Advanced (LTE Release 10) standard, which will be fixed in December 2010. This book focuses on LTE and LTE-Advanced, and provides engineers with real insight and understanding into the why and how of the standard and its related technologies. This book is written by engineers from Ericsson--the world's leading telecommunications supplier--who was heavily involved in the development of the standard. Follow-up to the very successful 3G Evolution, now focusing on LTE and LTE Advanced standard and its accompanying technologies Complete and clear explanation of LTE Advanced by the people who played a leading role in its development, which will enable engineers to quickly grasp the latest 3GPP Release 10 standard and implement it in their products Not a contributed book as most others on this topic are: this book gives an integrated introduction to the technologies and the standard
