Coumarin acts as a versatile framework in organic synthesis and drug development due to exhibit useful and diverse biological activities. We summarizes recent instances of coumarin derivative. As interest in the synthesis of coumarins fused or linked with different heterocycle derivatives has been ahead importance over past eras, reflecting the importance of such compounds in both medical and chemical research. Emphasis is placed on the search for innovative coumarin synthesis techniques and the diverse array of biological activities of coumarins. It is believed that the information compiled in this article will update scientists with recent findings of the synthesis and biological activities of coumarin derivatives and inspire them to use this promising moiety for further backbone derivatization and screening, as several novel compounds with biological and chemical properties are possible. Future goals for this field of research include the discovery, synthesis and development of compounds which display increased potency, as well as fuelling structure activity relationship studies aimed at understanding the modes of action of the most biologically active compounds.

Viruses in the Parvoviridae family constitute one of the most diverse and intriguing fields of research. While they all share an ssDNA genome and a small capsid, they can differ widely in structure, genome organization and expression, virus–cell interaction, and impact on the host. Exploring such diversity and unraveling the inherent complexity in these apparently simple viruses is an ongoing endeavor and commitment for the scientific community. The translational implications of research on parvoviruses are relevant. Within the family, some viruses are important human and veterinary pathogens, in need of diagnostic methods and antiviral strategies; other viruses have long been studied and engineered as tools for oncolytic therapy, or as sophisticated gene delivery vectors, and can now display their wide and expanding applicative potential. This Special Issue of Viruses collects recent contributions in the field of parvovirus research, with a focus on new insights and research on unresolved issues, as well as new approaches exploiting systemic methodologies. Evolution, structural biology, viral replication, virus–host interaction, pathogenesis and immunity, and viral oncotherapy are a selection of the topics addressed in the issue that can be of relevance to the community involved in parvovirus research and of interest to a wider audience.

Advances in Nutritional Research was conceived by the Public and Professional Information Committee of the American Institute of Nutrition as a service to the membership of the Institute and to others engaged in research and teaching in the nutritional sciences. This publication, which will consist of a series of annual volumes, is in tended to serve primarily as a source of authoritative information on the status of research on topics of active current investigation. In addition, it will contain reviews on subjects of research that have been characterized by progressive, if unspectacular, developments over a period of years. The coverage will extend to basic research in human, animal, and microbial nutrition, nutritional biochemis try, clinical nutrition, nutritional toxicology and pathology, and related specialties. The editors hope that this series will assist investigators to keep abreast of new developments in the broad field of nutritional research. It should be 'of particular value to graduate students and to investigators who wish to acquire a grasp of the current state of knowledge in fields other than their own. If the response of authors of the chapters in this first volume and the quality of their contributions are indicative, this hope will be realized. H. H. Fungal pathogens pose an on-going and serious threat for poikilotherms and homeotherms, and can cause a broad spectrum of diseases ranging from innocuous to life-threatening. In addition, long-term exposure to some mycotoxigenic moulds can lead to mycotoxicoses in human and animals. Given the expanding population of immune compromised hosts, the list of fungal opportunists grows longer every year. Moreover, antifungal resistance, drug-related toxicity and our limited arsenal of antifungals have exacerbated the situation. To address these problems, strategies such as the identification of novel targets, use of the structure-activity relationship in rational drug design, development of new formulations, modification of existing antifungals to combat resistance, and bioavailability enhancement are called for. For the reader’s convenience, this book has been divided into three sections. The first six chapters of Section I provide a timely review of mycoses, from endemic to cosmopolitan and from generalized to specific, while both chapters of Section II focus on risks associated with mycotoxins. In closing, the two chapters of Section III describe potential antifungal leads and drug candidates based on phytochemicals and coumarin scaffold.

Antioxidants are substances that can prevent or slow damage to living cells caused by free radicals, which are unstable molecules the body produces as a reaction to environmental and other pressures. Sometimes called “free-radical scavengers,” free radicals can cause mutation in different biological compounds such as protein, nucleic acids, and lipids, which lead to various diseases (cancer, cardiovascular disease, aging, etc.). Healthy foods are considered a main source of antioxidant compounds and from the beginning of a person’s life, a strong relationship is seen between antioxidant compounds and the prevention of certain diseases, such as types of inflammations, cardiovascular diseases, and different kinds of cancers. It is thus of great importance that new data relating to antioxidants and their biological activity be collected and that antioxidant modes of action be illustrated.Experts from around the world contributed to the current book, discussing antioxidant sources, modes of action, and their relation to human diseases. Twenty-five chapters are presented in two sections: Antioxidants: Sources and Modes of Action and Antioxidants Compounds and Diseases.
