Beginning with an introduction to kidney function, renal replacement therapies, and an overview of clinical problems associated with haemodialysis, this book explores the principles of the short-term baroreflex regulation of the cardiovascular system and the mechanisms of water and solute transport across the human body from a mathematical model perspective. It synthesizes theoretical physiological concepts and practical aspects of mathematical modelling needed for simulation and quantitative analysis of the haemodynamic response to dialysis therapy. Including an up-to-date review of the literature concerning the modelled physiological mechanisms and processes, the book serves both as an overview of transport and regulatory mechanisms related to the cardiovascular system and body fluids and as a useful reference for the study and development of mathematical models of dynamic physiological processes. Mathematical Modelling of Haemodialysis: Cardiovascular Response, Body Fluid Shifts, and Solute Kinetics is intended for researchers and graduate students in biomedical engineering, physiology, or medicine interested in mathematical modelling of cardiovascular dynamics and fluid and solute transport across the human body, both under physiological conditions and during haemodialysis therapy.

Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases remain the number one cause of death in developed countries and their prevalence is increasing rapidly in developing nations. This book brings together the recent information on these disorders and the links that exist between them in order to provide a complete picture of drug discovery for these conditions. The main three sections comprehensively discuss obesity, hypertension and cardiovascular disease, and diabetes in turn, following an introduction to the molecular links between them. The final chapter provides perspectives on future directions of the field. Chapters are contributed by leaders in the field from academia and industry and cover biomarkers, risk factors, gene-environment interactions, therapies and the various types of animal models that have been used to study each disease. Case studies describing the implementation of animal models in drug development further enhance the book’s usefulness as a comprehensive guide to this important therapeutic area. Providing a full picture of the various types of animal models that have been used to study obesity, hypertension, and insulin resistance with recent case studies, this book provides a valuable resource for medicinal chemists and clinicians working in these disease areas.

The term “Translational Research” reflects today’s integration of basic research (“bench”) findings with the clinical practice of medicine, and in a wider scope the application of results from the individual patient (“bedside”) to entire populations for the improvement of public health. This book offers future researchers a stimulus in many aspects of cardiovascular research, so as to promote their interest in future fields of cardiovascular disease, diagnosis and treatment. Introduction to Translational Cardiovascular Research discusses the fundamental and important aspects of the topic. It describes the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, the beta adrenergic receptors and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, while covering genetic polymorphisms both generally and specifically as regards the vascular endothelium and the use of microRNAs. As such, this book will be relevant to young physicians, nurses and other scientists engaged in the clinical cardiovascular field who want to added research-oriented dimension to their efforts towards better understanding and practicing of medicine. It also aims to attract young basic researchers who want to develop a better comprehension of the organism as a whole, man or animal, that they are investigating.

A. Schneeweiss Although the syndrome of congestive heart failure has been recognized many years ago, the approach for its evaluation and treatment has until recently, been partial and 'fragmentary'. Various aspects of the disease have been treated according to the evaluation tools and therapeutic measures available at each period. This approach resulted in some of the greatest achievements in the management of heart failure but also left many aspects neglected and also resulted in several paradoxes. Examples of the achievements and limitations of the 'fragmentary' ap proach are the use of diuretics and hemodynamic measurements. The devel opment of diuretics has provided us with an important tool for helping pa tients whose predominant problem was edema. The success of diuretics masked the fact that their use may often be hemodynamically unsound and that they may reduce cardiac output. Only many years after their introduction has the use of diuretics found its appropriate place. Hemodynamic monitoring has gone via the same path. The great contribu tion of continuous bedside hemodynamic measurements to understanding heart failure resulted in over-usage by many clinicians, who found themselves treating hemodynamic charts rather than patients. It took almost a decade to realize that hemodynamic improvement, even in the chronic setting, does not necessarily mean symptomatic improvement or an increase in exercise capac ity.
