Faulkner's use of Christian Mythology and Southern folklore in As I Lay Dying is well documented. However, Addie Bundren's journey to her burial plot parallels the travels of the dead in the Aztec myths of the gloomy underworld of Mictlan too closely to be explained by coincidence. This book explains some of the major similarities between the myths and AILD, and will suggest places where Faulkner may have obtained his source material.

The death and burial of Addie Bundren is told by members of her family, as they cart the coffin to Jefferson, Mississippi, to bury her among her people. And as the intense desires, fears and rivalries of the family are revealed in the vernacular of the Deep South, Faulkner presents a portrait of extraordinary power - as epic as the Old Testament, as American as Huckleberry Finn.

As I Lay Dying is not only about mortality insofar as it concerns Addie Bundren's death. More deeply, the novel explores the theme of mortality by showing each of Addie's family members, loved ones, and other acquaintances offer unique responses to her death, attempting to make sense of the nature of existence. In the novel's first chapters, Addie is alive, though in ill health. Addie and others expect her to die soon, and she sits at a window watching as her firstborn child, Cash, builds her coffin. Anse, Addie's husband, waits on the porch, while their daughter, Dewey Dell, fans her mother in the July heat. The night after Addie dies a heavy rainstorm sets in; rivers rise and wash out bridges that the family will need to cross to get to Jefferson. The family's trek by wagon begins, with Addie's non-embalmed body in the coffin. Along the way, Anse and the five children encounter various difficulties. Stubborn Anse frequently rejects any offers of assistance, including meals or lodging, so at times the family goes hungry and sleeps in barns. At other times he refuses to accept loans from people, claiming he wishes to "be beholden to no man," thus manipulating the would-be-lender into giving him charity as a gift not to be repaid.....

When the matriarch of the Bundren family dies, her family must confront the daunting task of transporting her body across the state of Mississippi for burial in her hometown. As they embark on this journey, with the coffin in tow, they face several trials and tribulations that not only complicate their travel but also highlight the innate dysfunction of the family's complex dynamic. This comprehensive volume explores the themes of William Faulkner's As I Lay Dying through the lens of family dysfunction, offering readers a critical look at the intersection between literature and sociology. The book examines Faulkner's life and influences and explores concepts such as the role of maternal influence and sibling rivalry within the novel and within the broader context of society. Chapters also offer a contemporary perspective on family dysfunction through discussion of topics such as the effects of emotional neglect and the role of maternal instincts.

Abstract: The goal of this thesis is to explore, with reasonable aesthetic considerations, an alternative way to make meaning out of the plot of Faulkner's fifth novel, As I Lay Dying. In this thesis, I question the implied heteronormativity of scholarship on the novel, particularly appertaining to the use made of Darl by scholars seeking to find aesthetic unity in the fifty-nine monologues of the text. Then, I read two critical works by Sigmund Freud, Beyond the Pleasure Principle and Civilization and Its Discontents, in order to question the nature of the erotics with which scholars justify their formal readings. Finally, I claim Darl not as queer, which he is called five times in the novel, but as gay. Using Adrienne Rich's essay "Compulsory Heterosexuality and Lesbian Existence," I conclude the paper by suggesting that Darl's centrality to the formal aesthetics of the novel allows for a reading of his character as a gay presence in Southern Literature. His presence, I argue, demonstrates the centrality of gay identity in the South and allows for a broader application of Faulkner to our understandings of who we are.
