The following historical statements all appear in well-established textbooks, and have become part of our common culture. Which of them would you say are true? * The Catholic Church incited and actively colluded in nearly two millennia of anti-Semitic violence, and Pope Pius XII is still rightfully known as ‘Hitler’s Pope’. * Only recently have we become aware of ancient and remarkably enlightened Christian gospels, which narrow-minded Catholic authorities tried to suppress. * Once in power as the official Church of Rome, Christians quickly and brutally persecuted paganism out of existence. * The fall of Rome and the ascendancy of the Church precipitated Europe’s decline into a millennium of ignorance and backwardness, which lasted until the Renaissance. * Initiated by the pope, the Crusades were but the first bloody chapter in the history of unprovoked and brutal Christian colonialism. * The Spanish Inquisition tortured and murdered huge numbers of innocent people for ‘imaginary’ crimes, such as witchcraft and blasphemy. * The Catholic Church persecuted and tried to suppress scientists such as Galileo, and the Scientific ‘Revolution’ therefore occurred mainly in more tolerant Protestant societies. * Being entirely comfortable with slavery, the Catholic Church did nothing to oppose its introduction in the New World, or to make it more humane. * Until very recently, Catholicism’s hierarchical view of the ideal state has resulted in its bitter resistance to all efforts to establish more liberal governments and its eager support for right-wing dictators. * It was the Protestant Reformation that broke the repressive Catholic grip on progress and ushered in capitalism, religious freedom and the modern world. In this powerful and persuasive book Rodney Stark subjects these and other widely-held beliefs to a rigorous historical assessment. He gives a compelling account of how each of them became accepted as the conventional wisdom, how egotism and ideology often worked together to create false or highly distorted pictures of people and events, and how we need to work hard to recover the truth if we’re to undo the cultural damage that centuries of anti-Catholic history has done. Contents: 1. Sins of Anti- Semitism 2. The Suppressed Gospels 3. Persecuting the Tolerant Pagans 4. Imposing the Dark Ages 5. Crusading for Land, Loot, and Converts 6. Monsters of the Inquisition 7. Scientific Heresies 8. Blessed Be Slavery 9. Holy Authoritarianism 10. Protestant Modernity

Excerpt from Thou Shalt Not Bear False Witness Against Thy Neighbour: A Letter to the Editor of the English Review Clear of the downright falsehood: but he insinuates it repeatedly, in the shuffling manner which characterizes the whole article, complaining of my eulogizing a sceptic and an infidel, while he omits all mention of my having said anything shewing how I deplored and mourned over his errours, while I tried to explain their origin and pro gress. To me it seemed that such a course would be far more profitable to persons in a like state of mind, than if I had denounced and railed at them. Many will be softened and won by sympathy, and by an earnest attempt to enter into their difficulties, who would only be repelled and irritated by a summary condemnation, the injustice and harshness of which they would deeply feel and resent. I am well aware that a practice very different from this has in all ages been adopted by the bravoes of Orthodoxy, one of whose favorite employments has ever been to traduce and blacken the character of all such as, on whatsoever grounds, had incurred the imputation of heresy. Afraid of meeting their adversaries in honorable battle, they have shot at them with poisoned arrows. I am aware too that many good men have betrayed the weakness of their faith, and the slipperiness of their honesty, by their readiness in giving ear to and propagating the grossest calumnies with such a purpose. But surely their conduct is a most power ful warning to seek truth and pursue it with Singleness of aim, in the smallest things as well as in the greatest. The course which I have taken seemed to me moreover to be that set before us in the example of Him, who had compassion on our infirmities, and came to hear our sins in this way also, and who did not refuse to be called the Friend of publicans and sinners. In the Reviewer's copy of the New Testament, one might suppose, all thisportion must be left out: for he has no more notion of such a duty than if he had lived in the ages anterior to the Gospel. He sneers at me more than once (pp. 402, 439) by means of his favorite flower of speech, italics, for having spoken of the deep sympathy with the errours and faults, and even with the sins of rfiankind, manifested in Sterling's early writings, as a peculiar excellence, which is also found in some others among the great writers Of our age. To those who have ever thought of comparing the manner in which the lower orders, their vices, their sins, their temptations, their errours, are spoken of now, with the tone adopted toward them in former centuries, the contrast must be very striking: and though this spirit may be perverted, as every good Spirit may be, and may be turned into maudlin sentimentalism, or into a pantheistic obliteration of the differences between right and wrong, still in itself it is a good spirit, and, when properly directed and controlled, is so far a Sign that our age in this respect is endeavouring to fashion itself more according to the pat tern of Christ. Good too are the fruits which this spirit is bearing more and more every year, in the manifold schemes and institutions for improving the moral condition of the lower orders, - in all that is done to humanize and to Christianize them. The Reviewer however rejects all sym pathy with such a Spirit. He refers two or three times to the passage, where I say, with plain reference to the story of the woman taken in adultery, that he who is conscious of no sin in like matters, may cast a stone at Sterling, but that I cannot. He seems to think this very strange, very reprehensible. Doubtless he would readily have cast a stone at Sterling, or at the adultress, had he been present, nay, even at Him who did not condemn the adultress. A. "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor." Whether committed by words, actions, or thoughts, the act of bearing false witness is a dangerous plague infecting churches, families, and nations. What is truth? How is it defended or violated? Is lying ever lawful, and can the truth be withheld from tyrants and wicked men? Can judges be guilty of bearing false witness? What do the Scriptures mean when they demand an eye for an eye? To answer these and many more questions, Defend the Truth brings together the writings of Swiss Reformer Pierre Viret and his contemporary John Calvin as they discuss the meaning and applicability of the ninth commandment. With penetrating insight and refreshing Biblical application, these two Reformers discuss the wide scope of this commandment of the Law, covering topics including truth, falsehood, deception, slander, perjury, true justice, and more.

A cancer is metastasizing within Christianity, and the traditionalists in our faith are nourishing its malignancy. The works of these disciples of deception began more than fifteen hundred years ago, and you know them not. To this day, the cancer lives. However, the misdeeds of the traditionalists, when uncovered, shine light upon the bearing of false witness. Our Creator has granted us tools, tools that can guide our works of interpretation. Many in our faith, however, ignore them. The answers to these questions will challenge the teachings in our faith.* Will our Creator burn the nonbelievers in hell?* Will only the selected few live in His kingdom?* Christianity hinges on the interpretation of Malachi 4:5 and Matthew 11:14. Did the Creator regenerate the spirit of Elijah in the body of John the Baptist?* Did He grant us one lifetime and one opportunity to overcome the weaknesses of the flesh?* Did Jesus Christ die on the cross for us?* Did He narrow the definition of regeneration, a word that appears twice within the Scriptures?* Is the practice of communion remembrance of Jesus Christ or a ritual with a history soaked in barbarism?* What was the sacrifice?Faith without reason misdirects us into a body of irrationality that can't withstand the scrutiny of the tools of interpretation. However, the glory and power of the four tools can extract truth from our Sacred Text. Through their use, we develop interpretations; we find meaning. We must excommunicate the dogmas. A literalism of convenience cannot supply interpretations of the Scriptures with a consistency that promotes spirituality. Only the tools can clear away the falsehoods now plaguing Christianity. Read any verse of the Bible, shine the light of the tools upon it. God will reveal meaning. In summary, however, our Creator did not leave us at the mercy of the commandments of men. He provided tools that can extract meaning from His Words. Christianity must again search its soul and reconfigure its teachings to find the spirituality that God intended. Understanding the tools can pave the way.

The law says be honest, truthful and faithful and treat everyone equally. But what does the law say when professional people start taking the laws into their own hands and playing with the justice system to use and abuse it with lies? When they deny the truth, lie and add false information to statements in order to ruin a person s reputation what does the law say then? Is there any justice? I was a victim of this. My only crime was my honesty. My son was a victim of bullying at school and no one considered the impact this had on him. Everything was denied and lies were added to the minutes of the meeting I attended. In a monstrous cover-up, all departments sided together. Meetings were scheduled by these departments and falsehoods drawn up against me. I was framed to look culpable. This is the true account of how my son and I experienced bullying at school and of the subsequent consequences. Islamic Law covers the giving of false testimonies, or bearing false witness. The messenger of God (peace be upon him) said: Shall I not inform you of the greatest of sins bearing false witness. The bearer of false witness commits several sins. They are as follows: a) The spreading of lies. Truly, God does not guide one who commits great sins one who is an oppressor, a transgressor, or a liar. b) A miscarriage of justice is committed against any person who has to bear false testimony, because its result means that the person is either deprived of property, honour, or his life. c) Conversely, it is unjust to the person favoured by false testimony because it allows them to acquire property unlawfully, thereby rendering them a sinner. d) The person delivering these untruths is unjust to himself by being the one to bear false witness. Lying represents an evil tongue. Indeed those who fabricate lies upon God are those who disbelieve in His teachings and His signs. It is they who are truly liars. The messenger of God said truth guides to righteousness, and righteousness leads to heaven. A person will evolve within truth until written with God as truthful. Lying leads to immorality which in turn leads to hell. A person will lie until written with God as a liar. A hypocrite (described to us by the Prophet) is one that lies as he speaks. An honest person has an answer to each lie levelled against them. And they will also admit to the honesty of a mistake. An honest person does not need to supply proof of their truthfulness it shows on their face. It is liars that look for proof to make their words appear true.

Bearing False Witness exposes in detail many of the material errors and distortions in Jimmy Carter's Palestine Peace not Apartheid. It includes articles by Professors Kenneth Stein, Michael Oren, Alan Dershowitz, and Melvin Konner, as well as from Ambassador Dennis Ross and Dr. Rachel Ehrenfeld. Also included are analysis by CAMERAs Andrea Levin, Dr. Alex Safian, Gilead Ini, Tamar Sternthal and Dexter Van Zile. Bearing False Witness underscores the need for reform of publishing houses, such as Simon and Schuster, that violate basic standards of accuracy by failing to fact-check the books they promote and profit from.
