David will never forget the day he met Theo—as much as he might want to. On a mission to right a wrong done to his sister as a child, David walks into LAO Schulz, a famous toy Mecca in the heart of New York City. What he sees that day in the stuffed-animal aisle challenges everything he understands about reality. As David turns the corner, he hears the sound of slapping. He investigates and sees a rather large stuffed bear viciously smacking a toddler around. As quickly as it starts, the attack ends. The bear regards David with cold, plastic eyes, climbs up on its shelf, and quickly settles into the lifeless pose one would expect from stuffed bears. Not only is this stuffed bear alive, David realizes, he’s evil. David decides he must own this bear, and with that, their bizarre relationship begins. His name is Theo, and he’s got a whopper of a story to further challenge David’s belief system. Cruelly put to death as a real bear cub, Theo is given a second chance at life—as a stuffed animal. Theo is forced to become a killer as a rising star among the ranks of a secret brotherhood of gangster teddy bears. Betrayed, Theo is left to rot in the slammer. Theo and his friends conspire to escape. With the loyal Houdini by his side, the gang breathes free air again, but karma, as they say, is no friend to an ex-con.

Ex-con ruins racist gang! He pranks the hell out of them. Comic, yet touching. (This is subtle literary fiction.) Members of an all-white prison gang threaten Patrick, a white ex-con who deals meth in San Diego and who likes all races. Patrick quits crime and befriends the police. Then he and a con artist legally prank and harass the racists. When a law-abiding Asian American woman informs Patrick that he got her pregnant, he immediately marries her. Asians now in his family, Patrick destroys the racist gang, pranking them with a vengeance, until they get hurt, go straight, or get arrested. Review: Watch out! Eric Hertz is a master of satire. Pranked Straight is a scathing lampoon, and Eric's wit is extra dry (so bitterly dry you might not notice it). But the story is rolling, fluid, and exciting. This is an interracial adventure. It's like George Orwell meets Joseph Wambaugh (with a dash of Harper Lee). But this story is written in a modern style, set in San Diego. I especially admire the endearing way Mr. Hertz portrays Mexican gangsters in this novel. Juan Neptune - Mexico City Literary Club

Liechtenstein is one of the smallest European states, a principality situated between Austria and Switzerland in the Upper Rhine Valley. The nation is less than three hundred years old, but the ruling family, whose name it bears, traces its lineage back to the twelfth century. For successive generations, members of the Princely House of Liechtenstein have been devoted art collectors. With a high degree of appreciation of artistic achievement, they have pursued a centuries-long family tradition of acquiring not only great paintings and sculpture but also rare firearms, fine porcelain, and other works of art. The result of this tradition is a collection of masterpieces that in its depth and breadth reflects more than four hundred years of European history and ranks among the world's greatest private collections. This publication accompanies an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art that marked the first time the masterpieces from this private collection were put on public display. The rich and varied array of paintings, sculpture, and other works included in this exhibition not only represents the paradigm of a great European princely collection, but also has the added distinction of being the collection of the only surviving monarchy of the Holy Roman Empire. -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.

This autobiographical account vividly portrays the vulnerability of a country at war and the personal dilemmas faced by those caught in the midst of evil in a time when the Nazi regime threatened to invade and conquer Europe and beyond. Robert Jean-Pierre "Jemp" Stein, an eleven-year-old boy, must learn how to survive when the Nazis take over his family's home country of Luxembourg. Forced to join the Hitler Youth to remain in school and avoid far worse consequences, Stein outwardly exhibits his loyalty to the Nazi cause while secretly working for a patriot group. He continues his covert work by helping Allied flyers escape through France, and in a grand conclusive moment in the war, Stein sees his country liberated by General Patton's army. Jemp recounts the horrors of how war rips into the heart of a community and takes over one boy's life. At the same time, it expresses the blessings received by Jemp, an active participant in restoring peace to the region.

This condensed anthology reproduces close to a dozen plays from Xiaomei Chen's well-received original collection, The Columbia Anthology of Modern Chinese Drama, along with her critical introduction to the historical, cultural, and aesthetic evolution of twentieth-century Chinese spoken drama. Comprising representative works from the Republican era to postsocialist China, the book encapsulates the revolutionary rethinking of Chinese theater and performance that began in the late Qing dynasty and vividly portrays the uncertainty and anxiety brought on by modernism, socialism, political conflict, and war. Chosen works from 1919 to 1990 also highlight the formation of national and gender identities during a period of tremendous social, cultural, and political change in China and the genesis of contemporary attitudes toward the West. PRC theater tracks the rise of communism, juxtaposing ideals of Chinese socialism against the sacrifices made for a new society. Post-Mao drama addresses the nation's socialist legacy, its attempt to reexamine its cultural roots, and postsocialist reflections on critical issues such as nation, class, gender, and collective memories. An essential, portable guide for easy reference and classroom use, this abridgment provides a concise yet well-rounded survey of China's theatricality and representation of political life. The original work not only established a canon of modern Chinese drama in the West but also made it available for the first time in English in a single volume.

A scholarly exploration of Elmore Leonard—provides original essays and fresh insights on the author’s works and influence Labelled as “the closest thing America has to a national novelist,” Elmore Leonard’s clean and direct writing, engaging bad guys, and deadpan humor resonate with readers around the nation and throughout the world. Popular films based on his books continue to introduce new audiences to Leonard’s unique way of engaging with complex themes of American culture and pop-culture history. Yet surprisingly, academic treatments of his writing are almost nonexistent. Critical Essays on Elmore Leonard is an original anthology that covers the topics, themes, literary and narrative style, and enduring influences of one of the finest crime writers in the history of the genre. This unique collection of essays explores the ways in which Leonard’s work reflects America’s dynamic, ever-changing culture. Divided into two parts, the book first examines major themes and topics in Leonard’s works, followed by detailed case studies of five individual works including Get Shorty and Out of Sight. Essays discuss topics such as Leonard’s skill at conveying sense of place, his use of dress and appearance in his crime fiction, the influence of romantic comedies and westerns on his writing, and the concepts of moral luck, determinism, and existentialism found in his novels. Unique and thoroughly original, this book: Covers Leonard’s entire career, including his early Western novels and his work in visual media Illustrates Leonard’s genius at handling free indirect discourse Discusses the author’s influence, legacy, and contemporary relevance in various contexts Explores Leonard’s success at making himself “invisible” in his own writing Includes an insightful introduction from the book’s editor Critical Essays on Elmore Leonard is an ideal resource for academics and students in the field of genre studies, especially crime fiction, and general readers with interest in the subject.
