Society was not prepared in 1981 for the appearance of a new infectious disease, but we have since learned that emerging and reemerging diseases will continue to challenge humanity. AIDS at 30 is the first history of HIV/AIDS written for a general audience that emphasizes the medical response to the epidemic. Award-winning medical historian Victoria A. Harden approaches the AIDS virus from philosophical and intellectual perspectives in the history of medical science, discussing the process of scientific discovery, scientific evidence, and how laboratories found the cause of AIDS and developed therapeutic interventions. Similarly, her book places AIDS as the first infectious disease to be recognized simultaneously worldwide as a single phenomenon. After years of believing that vaccines and antibiotics would keep deadly epidemics away, researchers, doctors, patients, and the public were forced to abandon the arrogant assumption that they had conquered infectious diseases. By presenting an accessible discussion of the history of HIV/AIDS and analyzing how aspects of society advanced or hindered the response to the disease, AIDS at 30 illustrates for both medical professionals and general readers how medicine identifies and evaluates new infectious diseases quickly and what political and cultural factors limit the medical community's response.

Marking the 30 years of AIDS, the report takes stock of the changes occurred in the AIDS epidemic and responses since the condition was first diagnosed in 1981. It also features commentaries from 15 leaders in the global AIDS response, including South Africa's President Jacob Zuma, former United States President Bill Clinton, former President of Brazil Luiz Inâacio Lula da Silva, singer Angelique Kidjo and formerUN Secretary-General Kofi Annan. It covers a wide range of areas, including the results achieved by HIV prevention efforts, the record number of people starting lifesaving treatment and the decline in resources for HIV. It also draws attention to the significant challenges remaining such as the gender inequalities and the increasing HIV prevalence among key populations at higher risk of infection.

The Face of AIDS film archive at Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, consists of more than 700 hours of unedited and edited footage, shot over a period of more than thirty years and all over the world by filmmaker and journalist Staffan Hildebrand. The material documents the HIV/AIDS pandemic and includes scenes from conferences and rallies, and interviews with activists, physicians, people with the infection, and researchers. It represents a global historical development from the early years of the AIDS crisis to a situation in which it is possible to live a normal life with the HIV virus. This volume brings together a range of academic perspectives – from media and film studies, medical history, gender studies, history, and cultural studies – to bear on the archive, shedding light on memories, discourses, trauma, and activism. Using a medical humanities framework, the editors explore the influence of historical representations of HIV/AIDS and stigma in a world where antiretroviral treatment has fundamentally altered the conditions under which many people diagnosed with HIV live. Organized into four sections, this book begins by introducing the archive and its role, setting it in a global context. The first part looks at methodological, legal and ethical issues around archiving memories of the present which are then used to construct histories of the past; something that can be particularly controversial when dealing with a socially stigmatized epidemic such as HIV/AIDS. The second section is devoted to analyses of particular films from the archive, looking at the portrayal of people living with HIV/AIDS, the narrative of HIV as a chronic illness and the contemporary context of particular films. The third section looks at how stigma and trauma are negotiated in the material in the Face of AIDS film archive, discussing ideas about suffering and culpability. The final section contributes perspectives on and by the filmmaker as activist and auteur. This interdisciplinary collection is placed at the intersection of medical humanities, sexuality studies and film and media studies, continuing a tradition of studies on the cultural and social understandings of HIV/AIDS.

Don Carrel has been living with AIDS since 1995. He suspects he was infected with HIV in 1981. Thirty years later, less than 2 percent of people with HIV have lived long enough to share their stories. In 1995, while lying in a hospital bed with Pneumocystis pneumonia, the most common form of death for someone with AIDS, Don had a riveting dream that dramatically altered his life and, perhaps the future lives of more than 100,000 teenagers. After making a full recovery, Don set out to teach young people what they needed to know about HIV prevention so that they wouldn't wind up in his shoes. His lofty goal: to stomp out AIDS. After 16 years, Don has collected thousands of thank-you letters from teens and adults who have heard his compelling presentations. Today, Don hopes to reach an even wider audience with his book, My Dream to Trample AIDS. Don's original goal was to put his presentation in book form, but it ended up being much more. Don says, "My story is about love, friends, family, grief, despair, hope, death and faith." It's also a detailed primer on HIV, as expressed in the subtitle: "What everyone of any age should know about HIV/AIDS." Don devotes a chapter to the history of HIV/AIDS, including the compelling theory as to why the virus first hit the gay community in the United States before it spread into the general population. Don's book summarizes current statistics on HIV/AIDS. It warns of populations most at risk of infection today: people of color, youth and even the elderly. It instructs readers on how to be tested for HIV. In very frank language, the book describes the risks of various sexual activities and even how to use a condom "properly." Don chronicles HIV treatment and his drug regimen for the past 25 years, including the cost, side effects and possibility, or lack thereof, of a cure for HIV/AIDS. Most compelling are Don's gut-wrenching stories about how HIV/AIDS has affected him and the profound sense of loss he's experienced repeatedly with the deaths of many friends from AIDS. He explains what it feels like to have HIV/AIDS and how it has shaped all facets of his life: physically, emotionally and spiritually. He asks his closest family members and friends to share their feelings when they first learned of his diagnosis. He also includes hundreds of quotes from students who have heard him speak. Last but not least, Don explains why he believes he has survived - and thrived - thanks to a powerful directive from "the messenger." Don says, "Having HIV is a huge blessing in my life." Don writes that this experience has helped him make a dramatic shift in how he views himself and has strengthened his belief in God.

As a result of the AIDS epidemic, many nations around the world have faced the demands of caring for a particularly vulnerable population of children, the orphans of parents who have died of AIDS or whose caregivers are terminally ill from the disease. Overcoming AIDS: Lessons Learned from Uganda offers an in-depth exploration of this global issue and provides a broad focus on evolving a constructive response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This collaborative resource is the fourth in the Research in Global Child Advocacy book series, and it offers readers a glimpse into the experience of HIV/AIDS infected and affected people from the perspective of researchers, policy makers, and professionals who diligently work toward crafting a framework for action that is integrated across disciplines. Despite the enormity and intensity of the problem, chapter authors share a commitment to advocate for a better world in which social and economic disparities do not preclude children from experiencing a future that is bright with potential opportunities and hope.
