The most influential writing on the pivotal concept of intersectionality, by the scholar who introduced the term, collected for the first time. Intersectionality has emerged as an influential approach to understanding discrimination and exclusion in our society, whose members can experience bias in multiple ways - as a consequence of race, gender, sexual orientation, or a combination of these. In this first-ever collection of Crenshaw's writing, readers will find the key essays and articles that have defined the concept of intersectionality.

When Old Testament Wisdom appeared in 1981, new perspectives on biblical theology, an increasing awareness of ancient Near Eastern texts resembling biblical wisdom, and an emerging interest in ethnic proverbs were mere intimations of what was to become a dramatic outpouring of scholarship on wisdom literature. In this expanded edition, James Crenshaw takes stock of the wealth of new material produced by contemporary interpreters. Liberation and feminists critics, scholars in comparative religion, specialists in devotional theology, and researchers exploring educational systems in the ancient Near East all have enriched our understanding of wisdom literature in recent years, and all receive insightful treatment in this new volume. Now as before, Crenshaw's Old Testament Wisdom is an invaluable asset for anyone wishing to understand the rich and complex legacy of wisdom literature.

Jordan Peterson's Twelve Rules for Life meets Jocko Willink and Leif Babin's Extreme Ownership in this tough-love leadership book from a Navy SEAL and rising star in Republican politics. In 2012, on his third tour of duty, an improvised explosive device left Dan Crenshaw's right eye destroyed and his left blinded. Only through the careful hand of his surgeons, and what doctors called a miracle, did Crenshaw's left eye recover partial vision. And yet, he persevered, completing two more deployments. Why? There are certain stories we tell ourselves about the hardships we face -- we can become paralyzed by adversity or we can adapt and overcome. We can be fragile or we can find our fortitude. Crenshaw delivers a set of lessons to help you do just that. Most people's everyday challenges aren't as extreme as surviving combat, and yet our society is more fragile than ever: exploding with outrage, drowning in microaggressions, and devolving into divisive mob politics. The American spirit -- long characterized by grit and fortitude -- is unraveling. We must fix it. That's exactly what Crenshaw accomplishes with FORTITUDE. This book isn't about the problem, it's about the solution. And that solution begins with each and every one of us. We must all lighten up, toughen up, and begin treating our fellow Americans with respect and grace. FORTITUDE is a no-nonsense advice book for finding the strength to deal with everything from menial daily frustrations to truly difficult challenges. More than that, it is a roadmap for a more resilient American culture. With meditations on perseverance, failure, and finding much-needed heroes, the book is the antidote for a prevailing "safety culture" of trigger warnings and safe spaces. Interspersed with lessons from history and psychology is Crenshaw's own story of how an average American kid from the Houston suburbs went from war zones to the halls of Congress -- and managed to navigate his path with a sense of humor and an even greater sense that, no matter what anyone else around us says or does, we are in control of our own destiny.

Tassafaronga was the last of a series of fiercely-fought sea battles around Savo Island during the Guadalcanal campaign in World War II. With the Japanese Navy deemed by many allied sailors inferior to United States forces, the night battles should have been easily won. On November 30, 1942, Admiral Carleton Wright, the American commander, was well-prepared and found the enemy exactly where he expected them to be. He was determined to avoid the mistakes of the previous night battles. As the torpedoes of his leading destroyers hit the water and the guns of his five cruisers roared out, he had every reason to be confident of victory. It soon became apparent, however, that the enemy had been severely underestimated. Their training, weapons, and reliance on optics proved to be excellent. The U.S. Navy's reliance on new radar technology and faulty torpedoes proved devastating. Within minutes, four of Wright's five cruisers were knocked out of action, one of which still lies in the depths of Ironbottom Sound. Little has been written about this deadly night battle, but Captain Crenshaw, a gunnery officer on one of the destroyers during that fateful night, has written a detailed tactical analysis of the engagement. The Battle of Tassafaronga is illustrated with thirty photographs, ship track charts and a list of sources.

Smoke and Mirrors is a passionate, richly nuanced work that shows television as a circus, a wishing well, and a cure for loneliness. Ranging from Ed Sullivan to cyberspace, from kid shows to cable, and from the cheap thrills of "action adventure" to the solemn boredom of PBS pledge week, Leonard argues for a whole new way of thinking about television. For Leonard, the situation comedy is a socializing agency, the talk show is a legitimating agency, the made-for-television movie is the last redoubt of social conscience, and television criticism itself is the last refuge of time-serving thugs and postmodernists. Instead of scapegoating television as the cause of crime in our streets, stupidity in our schools, and spectacle rather than substance in our government, Leonard sees something else inside the box: an echo chamber and a feedback loop, a medium neither wholly innocent of nor entirely responsible for the frantic disorder it brings into our homes.

"For decades, James Crenshaw's Old Testament Wisdom has been the premier introduction to the wisdom books of the Old Testament. That tradition continues with this newly updated edition. This popular textbook introduces readers to the wisdom tradition as well as the biblical books of Proverbs, Job, Ecclesiastes, Sirach, and the Wisdom of Solomon. In addition, Crenshaw has expanded the discussion to include sapiential works from the Dead Sea Scrolls, the impact of wisdom traditions on the New Testament writers, and a new chapter on knowledge about God and the ancient sages' understanding of revelation. He provides expert analysis of the legacy of wisdom in other parts of the canon and in other cultures, offering new insights and fresh perspectives that can only come from one so well versed on the significance of Old Testament wisdom" -- BACK COVER.

Written by a trio of celebrated scholars, The Race Track is a twenty-first-century road map to how race operates in America today. From its covert and psychological dimensions to how race plays a key role in allocating assets to some while denying them to others and a “whiteness protection program” that keeps race-based advantages intact, this landmark new book challenges some of society’s most cherished notions— about merit, markets, and choice, and about the causes and consequences of unequal racial outcomes. As leaders of a cutting-edge think-tank, the authors have crafted an essential guide to contemporary racism based on years of looking beyond the ivory tower and talking to ordinary people from all walks of life. Amid all the “post-racial” rhetoric, The Race Track boldly claims that it is not racist to talk about race while structural racism is alive and well. Asserting that color-bound problems cannot be remedied with colorblind solutions, this courageous new work lays out what the full range of responses must be if we are truly interested in achieving justice for all people.

By examining the highly contested legal debate about the regulation of pornography through an epistemic lens, this book analyzes competing claims about the proper role of speech in our society, pornography's harm, the relationship between speech and equality, and whether law should regulate and, if so, upon what grounds. In maintaining that inegalitarian pornography generates discursive effects, the book contends that law cannot simply adopt a libertarian approach to free speech. While inegalitarian pornography may not be determinative of gender inequality, it does contribute, reinforce, reflect and help maintain such unfairness. As a result, we can place reasonable gender-based regulations on inegalitarian pornography while upholding our most treasured commitments to dissident speech just as other liberal democracies with strong free speech traditions have done. --Stephen Macedo, Princeton University

In this book, the authors, all legal scholars from the tradition of critical race theory start from the experience of injury from racist hate speech and develop a theory of the first amendment that recognizes such injuries. In their critique of "first amendment orthodoxy", the authors argue that only a history of racism can explain why defamation, invasion of privacy and fraud are exempt from free-speech guarantees but racist verbal assault is not.
