Poor vision, if unnoticed and untreated, can dramatically reduce a childOs school achievement. While it is easy to blame underachievement on a variety of causes, the real cause may be directly related to vision development. Strong vision is much more than being able to see the blackboard from the back row. Solid visual skills that underlie brain learning are developed through a variety of activities that are less and less a part of childrenOs lives thanks to TV and video games. Eyes for Learning explains how parents and teachers can spot a vision-related learning problem and how to treat it. Dr. Antonia Orfield provides answers about referrals, required vision tests, and vision-improvement techniques. The bottom line is that good vision is a learned skill that is best developed by the practices explained in this book. Understanding these explanations can go a long way in saving a child from failure in school.

This book illustrates the ways that teachers, by seeing learning through children's eyes, create new possibilities for their students' intrinsic motivation and meaningful learning. Motivation and learning are linked in a view of knowledge that is called social constructivism, the theory that undergirds the ideas in this book. Social constructivist theorists acknowledge multiple constructions of the world. In social constructivist theory, each human being makes sense of the world in a unique way. For teachers to facilitate students' learning, therefore, it is essential that they seek to understand students' unique constructions and to see learning through their students' eyes. Social constructivism has major implications for the ways we understand learning, the ways we as teachers think about our roles, and the ways we teach. Our main purpose in this book is to propose a vision of the ways that learning experiences are transformed when teachers are learning through children's eyes. Seeing learning through children's eyes brings about important changes in classroom culture, including ways that curriculum is negotiated and enacted, changing the content of the curriculum, and changing relationships among all members of the classroom community.

For many of us, when we believe, receive, and make the decision to follow Jesus, we expect that our lives will fall into place.God promised to be with us, protect us, and answer our prayers, but instead, sometimes He feels distant, bad stuff happens to us, and He doesn't always seem to hear our prayers. So, what's the deal? Does any of this stuff really "work?" Why do we struggle with waiting patiently, grieving with hope, trusting God, spending time alone with Him and standing firm in our faith? The Apostle Paul says, "We fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal." What could he possibly mean? How are we to fix our eyes on the unseen? After all, the unseen is, well, invisible! However, when we see the unseen through the eyes of our hearts, our perspective on how we see and live our lives will change and we will be able to navigate, not only through peaceful times, but also through times of crises. Join us as we learn how to see beneath the surface of our lives. Bob was the son of missionaries and grew up in Guatemala. He graduated from Houghton College in 1972 with a BS in Biology, and then graduated from Physician Assistant training at Albany Medical College in 1977. After serving for over thirty years as a Pediatric PA, he returned to school and graduated from Northeastern Seminary with a MA in Theology. He served as the pastor of a small non-denominational church for six years before retiring in November 2015. He and his wife Cheryl recently moved to Orchard Park, NY to be closer to their two grandchildren.

From Our Eyes redefines the place of indigenous philosophies and teachings. The aim of the book is to find spaces and places that have been forgotten in the pursuit of "truth." It beings with the question, "Is there such a thing as Native American philosophy?" and ends with an exploration of the traditional Medicine Wheel teachings, illustrating throughout the related problems of authenticity and authority.

In this 10th Anniversary Edition of her popular text, Sonia Nieto reviews where we have been and where we should be going in our pursuit of creating multicultural learning communities in our schools. With a new Introductory Chapter and a new Epilogue, Nieto addresses some of the changes we have experienced during the past decade that help explain the current sociopolitical environment—our increasing diversity, the altering conditions in schools and in society, the influence of poverty on learning, and the impact of NCLB on classrooms and schools. This updated edition of The Light in Their Eyes: Focuses on the significant role of teachers in transforming students’ lives. Considers recent theories, policies, and practices about the variability in student learning and culturally responsive pedagogy. Examines the importance of student and teacher voice in research and practice. Provides an update, in their own words, on former students whose journal entries were included in the first edition. “In search of a critical community, Sonia Nieto combines respect for what children bring to school with a desire to awaken each one and tap into their passion for learning. This classic work radiates with the sensitivity Sonia Nieto is known for in all her work.” —Maxine Greene, Professor Emerita, Teachers College, Columbia University Praise for the First Edition! Educating Teachers for Diversity addresses the complex issues of how culture, race and ethnicity, and social class influence the teaching and learning processes. The author provides not only an analysis of current conditions and reforms in education, but also offers suggestions and practices for improving educational outcomes for all children. “In this insightful and wise book, Jacqueline Jordan Irvine reflects on topics ranging from the preparation of future teachers for urban schools to the role of colleges of education in current reform efforts. Debunking both taken-for-granted assumptions and facile answers to complex problems, she insists instead on focusing on what really matters: caring for and about the most vulnerable and forgotten children in our schools. Anyone interested in the future of public education today would do well to read this book.” —Sonia Nieto, author of The Light in Their Eyes: Creating Multicultural Learning Communities “This is a book to be read by education school faculty and administrators. It offers a design for the revitalization of teacher education that needs to be carefully considered . . . it is an agenda that must be pursued.” —David G. Imig, President and CEO, American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education
