Hormone Receptors in Breast Cancer provides an up-to-date resource of the role of hormone receptors in breast cancer written in depth for both the basic molecular academic researcher and translational scientist. Advances in basic science of molecular endocrinology have undoubtedly been translated into clinical practice, and clinicians caring for this disease need to be knowledgeable about these developments. The molecular basis of hormone action has been elucidated, and the relative significance of the different estrogen and progesterone receptor isoforms has been explored. This explosion of information has lead to exciting new areas of gene specific targeting of the disease, and breast cancer prevention. Paradigm shifts in treatment options and sequencing have recently occurred in breast cancer management, necessitating close cooperation and communication between translational scientists and physicians. This book is focused on providing this communication.

Obesity is a risk factor for breast cancer in older women. A number of adipose-derived and obesity-related factors have been shown to affect tumour cell growth. These include adipokines, insulin, IGF-1 and oestrogens. The majority of obesity-related postmenopausal breast cancers are oestrogen-dependent. Since the ovaries no longer produce oestrogens after menopause, and that circulating levels are negligible, it is evident that it is the oestrogens produced locally within the breast adipose that are responsible for the increased growth of breast cancer cells. Aromatase is the enzyme that converts androgens into oestrogens and its regulation is dependent on the activity of a number of tissue-specific promoters. Targeting oestrogen biosynthesis in obesity may be useful for the prevention of breast cancer. Aromatase inhibitors are efficacious at treating postmenopausal breast cancer and recent studies suggest that they may also be useful in the prevention setting. However, these compounds inhibit the catalytic activity of aromatase and as a consequence lead to a number of undesirable side-effects, including arthralgia and possible cognitive defects due to inhibition of aromatase in the bone and brain, respectively. Novel therapies, such as those employed to treat obesity-associated disease, including anti-diabetics, may prove successful at inhibiting aromatase specifically within the breast. This SpringerBrief will explore all of these issues in depth and the authors are in a unique position to write about this topic, having extensive experience in the field of aromatase research.‚Äč

Breast cancer is on the increase in the West and, despite governments spending billions on research and new treatments, your chances of survival are roughly the same today as they were 50 years ago. This controversial book exposes the failings of conventional treatments of breast cancers and offers a revolutionary programme for lowering the risk of breast cancer, significantly improving your chances of recovering from this disease, and preventing a reoccurrence. Topics include: teenagers taking the pill are 600 per cent more likely to get breast cancer; biopsies, mammograms and chemotherapy often do more damage than good; 80 per cent of breast cancers are brought on by environmental factors, such as diet and exposure to toxins and pollutants; natural progesterone helps prevent and treat breast cancer; and explains that 30 minutes of moderate exercise a day may save your life.

Hormonal carcinogenesis is an important and controversial area of current research. In addition to accelerating existing cancers, can hormones play the role of primary carcinogens? How do genetic factors influence hormone-related cancer risk? Hormones, Genes, and Cancer addresses these questions. Over the past few decades, cancer research has focused on external environmental causes(e.g., tobacco smoke, viruses, asbestos). With the advent of new genetic sequencing techniques, we are just now beginning to understand how the body's internal environment(i.e., the hormones and growth factors that determine normal development) influences cancer etiology and prevention. From molecular insights to clinical analyses, this volume provides state-of-the-art information on the complex interactions between hormones and genes and cancer. The epidemiology and molecular endocrinology of prostate, breast, uterine, ovarian and testicular cancer are detailed in this timely treatise.
