One of the most difficult things to do is to take a church, that has been small for a long time, and cause it to grow. It is difficult at best. It requires a great deal of prayer and a well laid plan. You cannot just go into the task and “wing it.†If you don’t have a plan going in then you are destined for failure. How do I know that it is difficult to cause a small church to grow? Because the average church in America has an attendance of just sixty five! Only one percent of churches are over one thousand in attendance. As I am writing this book 59 churches a day are closing their doors. I don’t want to be average and I don’t believe you do either. You may not want a church of thousands but you definitely want to do more than you are presently doing. As with any task you need to know what you are doing and how to go about it. This book is designed to give you an outline of things to look at and help you think through each step that you plan to take.

Myth or fact? If we build a nice enough church, people will come to worship. We don't need to plan for worship. It will happen naturally. The major ministry of the church is inside the church building. It's OK if children's Sabbath school classrooms are overcrowded. If we can get a top-name evangelist to speak at our church, we'd see great things happen. Myths. All myths. If you believe any of these statements are true, you aren't the only one. Many people have held to these and other common myths that stunt church growth. In Help! I Want My Church to Grow, Pastor David Ripley exposes the 31 most widespread misconceptions that keep churches from growing into vibrant communities. Drawing from more than 20 years of pastoral experience, Ripley identifies pitfalls and offers principles that will attract people to your church. Each section of the book includes discussion questions, making it invaluable for small group studies or leadership meetings. Leadership in Small Churches inspires and equips men and women who are called to serve in churches of less than 100 people, which are the majority of churches in the United States. Small churches in the United States suffer from a lack of leadership. On the one hand, there is a shortage of leaders. On the other hand, leaders who serve faithfully sometimes feel ill-equipped to carry out their calling due to inadequate training, especially a lack of training specific to small churches. This volume provides guidance from scholars and practitioners with experience in small churches. Because of their experience in and commitment to ministry in small churches, these writers are well qualified to discuss the breadth of topics in this book. These topics include developing vision, handling conflict, pastoral care, preaching, discipleship, ministry to youth and children, missions, and identifying and training leaders.

Do the programs crowding the typical church’s weekly schedule today lack an essential element, one that is fundamental to their having the greatest spiritual impact? This biblically grounded book asserts that many leaders overlook the necessary precondition of discerning and cooperating with the empowering will of the Holy Spirit before putting their plans into action. Growing the Church in the Power of the Holy Spirit is a highly practical guide for nurturing relations between believers and the Holy Spirit, a process facilitated by seven dynamics.• Love that draws us into engagement• Faith and obedience• Receiving divine guidance• Exercising spiritual discernment• Welcoming the gifts and manifestations of the Holy Spirit• Intercessory prayer that shapes the future• Seeing and responding to kairos momentsAdvanced by the church leadership and brought into being by the Holy Spirit, these factors help congregations preach and teach, worship, heal, govern, make disciples of converts, and evangelize. One of this book’s strengths is the use of case studies to illustrate how the seven dynamics can take root in local congregations.

God called me in September 1994. It was during my quiet time before going out for my consulting practice. I was then the Chief Executive Officer/Managing Consultant of Alaryn Management Centre Ltd. I was deeply involved in boosting sales, training and equipping managers and officers of various companies who retained us as their Management/Training consultant. By the grace of God, several small and big companies grew and benefitted from our consulting services. I heard God clearly telling me on that fateful morning thus "The same things you are giving to the business world, package it, give it to my church, beginning with the Bible..." I have been doing just that since 1994, as CEO Christian Leadership Skills Inc. The divine call is one of the reasons why I wrote this book. I have been involved in Christian leadership since 1982. But I started pastoring in 1995, as Senior Pastor. It has been my motivation, desire and passion to see God's work grow and progress. Most of the principles in this book, if not all, have been practiced with results in our ministry. When I was privileged to become the President of AGAPE Conference in 1987, only one or two churches attended. By 2003, 203 churches from 85 denominations became regular participants. In other words, I am a fellow student with you dear precious reader in this same school of church growth. This is the second reason why I wrote this book . My wife, Lara, is a Mathematician. She has been teaching Mathematics since 1989. Naturally, she likes computation and percentages. We came back from a Pastors' meeting one evening, Lara analyzed the various reports submitted by about 187 churches. Her statistical conclusion got my attention. She found out that only two churches of the lot were above 1,000 in attendance. Only one church was 500 in attendance, ten churches averaged 300 worshippers. About twenty-four churches were above 100. One hundred and fifty churches were below 100 in attendance. Though our church was above 1,000 at that time, we received a burden, a mandate to seek for what factors make for church growth. When we searched further, we discovered that 87% of churches in Nigeria were below 200 in attendance. This is the third reason why I wrote this book. It is to report our findings on what make churches grow. I have also discovered that success in ministry is more than numbers. What makes for success in the eyes of God, the LORD of the harvest, is not the same indices used by men to bench mark success. There are habits found with successful pastors. In fact, by and large, success in ministry is an inside job. No work can grow faster on the outside than the man behind the work is growing on the inside. This is my fourth reason for writing this book. The challenge of growth is enormous in the gospel ministry in Nigeria and Africa. The problem and challenges we face are not the same as those faced in other lands and under different climes. The few books we are reading on Church Growth are written by foreign authors, far removed from our context. Many are not relevant to Africa. Except from the writings of Dr. Francis Akin-John, Bishiop David Oyedepo, Pastor Mathew Ashimolowo and very few others, there are not many books and literature on what makes churches and ministries to grow in our contemporary African setting. If this gap is filled a little by this book, then the fifth reason for its writing is justified. We need to continually elevate our thoughts in search of solutions to problems that confront us today. We can not solve our current problems with the level of thinking of yesteryears. This book is a little effort to advance the frontiers of knowledge on the subject of church growth. This is the seventh reason why it took me about 25 years of christian leadership experience, over a decade in pastoring small and growing large churches, and 100,0000 hours, to put down 100 ways to increase church attendance.

Dudley's work in Making the Small Church Effective (1978) broke new ground in understanding the dynamics of life in the small congregation. In this revised edition, Dudley revisits the small church, posing new questions reflective of the considerable changes that have swept over small churches in the last two decades. Among the most significant recent developments are shifts in institutional loyalty and individual's sense of identity in relation to larger groups and organizations. Dudley explores the key components that contribute to a small congregation's sense of unity and that motivate its members to more faithfully live out their faith.

"For fifty years, a parade of writers has labored to show declining churches the route to new growth. Bill McConnell, from extensive experience and wise reflection, has written one of the most interesting and useful books of the type. As this book is read by church leadership teams (not by the pastor alone), it will catalyze the turnaround of several thousand local churches, at least." -Dr. George G. Hunter III, Distinguished Professor of Evangelization, Asbury Theological Seminary "Bill McConnell is a delightful writer, and this book is as easy to read as it is substantive in its content. It is intelligent, intuitive, and informed. There is no substitute for wisdom born of experience and perseverance, and that wisdom is found here. Full of practical insights and suggestions, this book also provides a window into Bill's personal journey as a successful leader of congregational transformation." - Dr. Dick Hamm, author, coach-consultant, partner of The Columbia Partnership, and past president and general minister of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) "Although not textbooks, I wish Bill McConnell's books could be required reading for all mainline denominational churches. As a successful pastor and an advisor to many churches, McConnell writes from a wealth of experience that is immensely practical and applicable. All church leaders and pastors who wish to move their churches forward toward a healthy and exciting future should get this book." - Margo Woodworth, Retired Executive Director of Net Results, Inc. Dr. Bill McConnell is a native of Louisville, Kentucky, has served in the church for over forty years, and is a church transformation consultant and Christian leadership coach. He speaks in many venues around the nation on the subject of church transformation. He is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, Asbury Theological Seminary, and Kingsway Theological Seminary.

Why Plan Strategy? Is church growth theory incompatible with belief in the sovereignty of God? Does adherence to church growth principles leave out dependency upon the work of the Holy Spirit? C. Peter Wagner answers no to both questions. He further believes that no task could be more crucial than fulfilling the Great Commission in our generation, and how to approach and plan for the execution of this task is the questions of the day. Strategies for Church Growth addresses this key issue in a biblically pragmatic way. It brings together for the first time many principles of evangelism and missions which have proved, through recent research and experience, to be effective in implementing the Great Commission. It also unifies, in concise form, the latest research of the Church Growth Movement, the Lausanne Committee on World Evangelization, the U.S. Center for World Mission and numerous other key contributors to the recent explosion of evangelistic technology. Among the topics explored are: - the major components of strategy - choosing the appropriate strategy - advantages of having a strategy - the theology of church growth - the harvest principle and soil testing - why you should aim for church growth - characteristics of good goals - the meaning of mission and evangelism - how to target your outreach
