Gertrude Stein, as a college student at Radcliffe and a medical student at Johns Hopkins Medical School, was a privileged woman, but she was surrounded by women who were trapped by poverty, class, and race into lives that offered little choice. Her portraits of Anna and Lena are examples of realistic depictions of immigrant women who had no occupational choice but to become domestic workers. This collection of documents from the history of women's suffrage, medical history, modernist art, and literature enables readers to see how radical Stein's subject was.

A new and enticing voice in fiction draws readers through the streets of Paris and New York on an intricate adventure. It’s twisting, contemplative, playful and darkly entertaining. What writer Benjamin Constable needs is a real-life adventure wilder than his rampant imagination. And who better to shake up his comfortable Englishman-in-Paris routine than the enigmatic Tomomi “Butterfly” Ishikawa, who has just sent a cryptic suicide note? She’s planted a slew of clues—in the pages of her journal, on the hard drive of her computer, tucked away in public places, under flowerpots, and behind statues. Heartbroken, confused, and accompanied by an imaginary cat, Ben embarks upon a scavenger hunt leading to charming and unexpected spaces, from the hidden alleys of Paris to the cobblestone streets of New York City. But Butterfly’s posthumous messages are surprisingly well informed for the words of a dead person, and they’re full of confessions of a past darkened by insanity, betrayal, and murder. The treasures Ben is unearthing are installments of a gruesome memoir. Now he must draw a clear line between the real and surreal if he is to save himself, Butterfly, and what remains of their crazy and amazing friendship.

The trilogy Three Lives tells the story of three common women, living in Bridgepoint, a fictional town based on Baltimore. The three stories are independent of each other, but share much more than a same town. The First Story, "The Good Anna" tells the tale of life and death of a housekeeper Anna, and her difficulties with unreliable under servants and "stray dogs and cats". Although her job is hard and often quite dull, Anna remains happy with here green parrot that brings colors to her life. "Melanctha" focuses upon the distinctions and blending of race, sex, gender, and female health. The main character Melanctha, daughter of a black father and mixed-race mother in segregated Bridgepoint, goes throughout the life on a quest for knowledge and power, as she is dissatisfied with her role in the world. "The Gentle Lena" follows the life of Lena, a German girl brought to Bridgepoint by a cousin. Lena begins her life in America as a servant girl, but is eventually married to Herman Kreder, the son of German immigrants. Both Herman and Lena are marked by extraordinary passivity, and the marriage is essentially made in deference to the desires of their elders. Gertrude Stein (1874-1946) was an American novelist, poet, playwright and art collector, best known for Three Lives, The Making of Americans and Tender Buttons. Stein moved to Paris in 1903, and made France her home for the remainder of her life. Picasso and Cubism were an important influence on Stein's writing. Her works are compared to James Joyce's Ulysses and to Marcel Proust's In Search of Lost Time.

My Three Lives was Stefan Zweig's working title for his memoir The World of Yesterday, also published by Pushkin Press and translated by Anthea Bell. In this definitive biography, Oliver Matuschek uses the title to reference the three major phases in Zweig's life—his years of apprenticeship, his years of success as a professional working writer in Salzburg, and finally his years of exile in Britain, the USA and Brazil. Drawing on a great wealth of newly available sources, Oliver Matuschek recounts the eventful life of a writer spoilt by success—a life lived in the shadow of two world wars, and which ended tragically in a suicide pact. Including the sort of personal detail conspicuously absent from Zweig's memoir, and incorporating newly discovered documents, Matuschek's biography offers us a privileged view into the private world of the master of psychological insight.

In part one, the author gives an account of his early life, including his schooling and the degrees he earned from reputable American universities. He then discusses how he utilized this knowledge to build his home country. Mr. Assifi climbed the professional ladder, becoming governor of an important Afghan province and then the minister of mines and industries before the Soviet Red Army’s invasion and takeover of his homeland. Part two describes when all hell breaks loose in Afghanistan. It is an eyewitness account of the government coup and the murder of Afghanistan’s beloved president, his wife, his daughters and sons, and other women and children in his family. The author kept secret notes while he was in prison, and he managed to get those notes out once he was released. A daily account of these events, Assifi’s imprisonment, and the torture and slaughter of thousands of innocent people by the Communists, who had been trained by the Soviet Russian government, is provided in this part of the book, which is called “The Origins of the Tragedy of Afghanistan.” Part three is the story of the author’s new life in the land of the free. It is an account of how the author managed to get his wife and children to America, which the author calls heaven on earth. In this part, Mr. Assifi speaks of the work he did in America and when he returned to Afghanistan to rebuild his destroyed homeland and provide assistance to its downtrodden people.

Her mother, Diana, is the primary suspect—until the police discover his second wife, and then his third. The women say they have never met—but Picasso knows otherwise. Picasso remembers lifting the phone, listening to late night calls with Bert, a woman heavily pregnant with Oliver's fourth child. As the police circle and a detective named Kyle Kennedy becomes a regular fixture in their home, Picasso tries to make sense of her father's death, the depth of his deceit, and the secrets that bind these three women.
