Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934) made prolific and lasting contributions to understanding "the life of the infinitely small." Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934) made prolific and lasting contributions to understanding "the life of the infinitely small." Widely thought of as the founder of neuroscience, Cajal made remarkable explorations into the organization and function of the nervous system. His work is still referred to more than that of any other scientist in the field.W. Maxwell Cowan's foreword to this edition conveys the excitement and energy of Cajal's life and endeavors, the liveliness and flamboyance of his engagements with the microscope. Cowan surveys Cajal's salient discoveries, noting that almost every important conceptual issue in neurobiology was foreshadowed in Cajal's work: the initial description of the climbing fibers of the cerebellum, the discovery of the growth cone, the concept of the "dynamic polarity" of the neurom an anticipation of the later discovery of axonal transport, and the prediction that new synapses may be formed throughout life to serve as a physical basis for learning and memory. W. Maxwell Cowen is Vice President and Chief Scientific Officer at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

Every person has a story to tell. This is the story of a Bangladeshi who was born one cold December morning in the village of Lostimanika in East Pakistan and went on to traverse the world during the next sixty plus years. It is a story of growing up in the peaceful Hindu-Muslim community of Narayanganj, of a Muslim boy being educated in Catholic schools, and of leaving home to study in the West when he was merely seventeen. That started a fifty-year journey from his homeland to his present home in Canada. Through it all, he lived and worked in six continents and experienced the beauty and diversity as well as the complexities and hardships faced by peoples worldwide. This book is a personal story, a collection of snippets from his eventful journey through life. The author shares many delightful anecdotes, the scary moments that spelt danger, and his occasional brush with death. It is also a story of visits to many historical, cultural, and religious sites, and of learning about man’s contribution to humanity. The author has worked with many governments, civil society organizations, academics, the military, and the media under challenging circumstances and often in hazardous environments. It is in the end a story of surmounting all obstacles and of having lived a full and happy life.

In this collection of informal reminiscences, first published in 1975, Max Born has written an extraordinarily vivid account of his life and work, originally intended for his family. Ranging from his time at the University of Göttingen, where Born had his first real motivation for a professional career in science, to the period in Berlin as professor extraordinary, when he and his wife became close friends of Einstein, these anecdotes and memories chart the "heroic age of physics" from the perspective of one of its leading characters. In 1954 Born was awarded the Nobel Prize in physics for his fundamental contributions to the great discovery of that cadre of superlative scientific minds – quantum theory. But his scientific research provides only one strand of this story. Born’s varied interests outside science led to many interesting experiences – some of historical importance insofar as they offer a glimpse into German society before and between the wars.

Youngest son David Boyd (recently deceased), himself an artist, takes us deep inside the family home, 'Open Country', to witness day-to-day life and the influences that shaped the extraordinary talents that would emerge. Nurtured and supported by their often-eccentric father, potter Merric Boyd, and devout mother, also a potter, Doris - as well as their artist grandparents, Emma Minnie and Arthur, both established painters at the time of their marriage - children Lucy, Arthur, Guy, David and Mary enjoyed an extraordinary life of freedom among the sprawling Murrumbeena garden. David roams the fields and paddocks that surround the home, immersing himself in the nature that he adores and will later inform his art and music. In this unfettered environment, a young Arthur removes a portion of the roof of the house to build himself a painting studio where the light is best. Artistic expression, music, poetry and philosophic discussion are the order of the day in the 'Brown Room', the family living room and centre of their cultural life. Artists, writers and philosophers are welcomed (David recalls the legs of ballet dancer Anna Pavlova), as well as the odd waif whom Merric collects in his travels - often sending them on their way with a fine piece of his pottery, much to the annoyance of Doris who struggles with the family finances. Their way of life is often at odds with conservative society, and the children encounter prejudice when they first attend school, where they realise long hair for boys is not the norm. They soon realise their family is not like others. We follow David through his first forays into the world of paid work in pre-war Melbourne, with varying success and sometimes amusing mishaps. His elevation as a musician is interrupted by the outbreak of war and we see the Boyd brothers, committed pacifists, reluctantly conscripted to the army. Written just prior to his death in 2010 at the age of 87, David Boyd's highly personal family memoir provides unique and fascinating insight. Highly entertaining and accessible, An Open House is an important contribution to the nation's artistic heritage and a revealing portrait of one of our most famous families by one who lived in it.
