Given the Catholic Church’s complex history concerning divorce and remarriage, it’s not surprising that the promulgation of Amoris Laetitia in 2016 caused such a stir among the laity, the press, some theologians, and even some bishops. This book endeavors to introduce concepts and contexts that will help all these groups understand the document in a new light, explaining what the rule of law actually means, and hopefully open a door to further discussion among theologians and clergy whose critical comments have so often missed the point of Francis’s apostolic exhortation.

Trusting her instincts has kept Mercy Belle alive. Her job as the head of Blue Belles Investigations has taught her to trust no one and nothing, except her own feelings. So, what will she do now that her feelings can’t be trusted? This current case has Mercy baffled. Her mind is screaming that something is wrong. She knows she should be running, but something about Archer Cross keeps pulling her back. Her reactions to Cross are bouncing between distrust and burning desire, making her indecisive. Her mind has every reason to distrust him, but her heart won’t let go. Archer’s life as a news man has brought him plenty of the wrong kind of attention. He knows that he is smitten by the feisty red-headed investigator, but she’s running hot and cold. And Archer likes it hot. Trouble is on the horizon. Can Mercy solve the case before it’s too late?

The Godly Man's Picture, Drawn with a Scripture Pencil, or, Some Characteristic Marks of a Man who is Going to Heaven. The soul being so precious, and salvation so glorious—it is the highest point of prudence to make preparations for the eternal world. It is beyond all dispute, that there is an inheritance in light; and it is most strenuously asserted in Holy Scripture that there must be a fitness and suitability for it (Col. 1:12). If anyone asks, "Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord?" the answer is, "He who has clean hands, and a pure heart" (Psalm 24:4). To describe such a person is the work of this ensuing treatise. Here you have the godly man's portrait, and see him portrayed in his full lineaments

It is often assumed that the law and religion address different spheres of human life. Religion and ethics articulate complex systems of moral reasoning that concern norms, deliberation of ends, cultivation of disposition, and transformation of moral agency. Law, in contrast, seeks to govern human conduct through procedural justice, rights, and public good. Doing Justice to Mercy challenges this assumption by presenting the reader with an urgent conversation between the law and religion that yields a constructive approach, both theoretically and practically, to the complex role of mercy in our legal process. Authored by legal practitioners, activists, and theorists in addition to theologians and ethicists, the essays collected here are informed by timeless principles, and yet they could not be timelier. The trend in sentencing moves toward an increased severity, and the number of incarcerated people in the United States is at an all-time high. In the half-decade since 9/11, moreover, homeland security has established itself as a permanent fixture in our lives. In this atmosphere, the current volume seeks initially to clarify how justice and mercy intertwine in relation to a number of issues, such as rehabilitation, the death penalty, domestic violence, and war crimes. Exploring the legal, philosophical, and theological grounds for mercy in our courts, the discussion then moves to the practical ways in which mercy may be implemented. Mercy follows the life of Gil Mercy Aller, a small-town boy from Michigan who, against all odds, becomes the light heavyweight boxing champion of the world. Leaving behind his friends and family in the close-knit community of Iron Mountain, Gil sets off for New York in pursuit of his dream to become a Broadway dancer. Unused to big city ways, Gil enlists the help of a priest to find lodgings and then secures employment with a local florist. He settles into a comfortable routine, pleased that he is one step closer to realizing his dream. A chance encounter in a neighborhood bar disrupts that dream and leads to a lifelong friendship. While defending a ladys honor against a couple of thugs, Gil attracts the attention of Louie, a slick boxing promoter, and his partner, Huey, an ex-fighter. The two friends witness Gils superior fighting skills, and a reluctant Gil suddenly finds himself thrust into the unlikely, often times shady, world of boxing. Louie and Huey have big plans for Gilthey see his potential as a future champion and make him an offer he cant refuse. Gil goes along with their plans, if only to help pay for his expensive dancing lessons, and agrees to adopt the fighting name of Mercy. Under Louie and Hueys expert tutelage, Mercy wins fight after fight, rising to the top of the boxing profession and eventually earning the coveted title of light heavyweight champion of the world. His Broadway dream forgotten, Mercy is now firmly in the clutches of the boxing world, loved by his fans and hated by his enemies. Along the way, he meets Victoria, the love of his life, only to lose her in a tragic car accident. After Victorias death, Mercy hits the depths of depression and tries to find solace in the bottle. Losing his title, his self-respect, and almost his life, Mercy is rescued by Jane, a savvy sports reporter, who brings him back from the brink of destruction. Mercy finds love again and regains his title, but he never forgets Victoria.
