I was inspired to write this book after watching my young granddaughter Imogen playing in my garden one summer. From an early age, Imogen began to show signs of having an extraordinary imagination. When in trouble with her grandma over small transgressions, she would quickly say that it was the naughty little elves in granddad’s garden that made her do these naughty things. Hearing this, I decided to place a few small elves, fairies, gnomes, and pixies in parts of my garden. I have to say that this idea really took off. Imogen began to invent really outlandish stories of the fun she was having in the garden with the naughty little elves. So much so that I began to add other little characters into the garden. As I began to write this book, I suddenly became as much of a child as my granddaughter. I began to create, in my head anyway, lots of different characters and the different things that they would get up to. Every time I would sit in front of my PC to write another story, I suddenly became a child once again. I found myself almost believing in the adventures that I was writing about. Not only was I beginning to believe in the adventures but I found myself being dragged into the stories. It was as if I was really there in Angle-Wing Forest with my granddaughter Imogen. When I had completed this collection of adventures in Fairy Land, I gave them to my granddaughter to read, and she loved them. So remember, people, if you can set aside all your adult thoughts and your adult ways for one day, then you just might enjoy the adventures in Angel-Wing Forest with your own beautiful children.

"How much history can be communicated by pressure on a guitar string?" Robert Palmer wondered in Deep Blues. Greil Marcus answers here: more than we will ever know. It is the history in the riff, in the movie or novel or photograph, in the actor's pose or critic's posturing--in short, the history in cultural happenstance--that Marcus reveals here, exposing along the way the distortions and denials that keep us oblivious if not immune to its lessons. Whether writing about the Beat Generation or Umberto Eco, Picasso's Guernica or the massacre in Tiananmen Square, The Manchurian Candidate or John Wayne's acting, Eric Ambler's antifascist thrillers or Camille Paglia, Marcus uncovers the histories embedded in our cultural moments and acts, and shows how, through our reading of the truths our culture tells and those it twists and conceals, we situate ourselves in that history and in the world. Rarely has a history lesson been so exhilarating. With the startling insights and electric style that have made him our foremost writer on American music, Marcus brings back to life the cultural events that have defined us and our time, the social milieu in which they took place, and the individuals engaged in them. As he does so, we see that these cultural instances--as lofty as The Book of J, as humble as a TV movie about Jan and Dean, as fleeting as a few words spoken at the height of the Berkeley Free Speech Movement, as enduring as a Paleolithic painting--often have more to tell us than the master-narratives so often passed off as faultless representations of the past. Again and again Marcus skewers the widespread assumption that history exists only in the past, that it is behind us, relegated to the dustbin. Here we see instead that history is very much with us, being made and unmade every day, and unless we recognize it our future will be as cramped and impoverished as our present sense of the past.

In the first book to consider British suburban literature from the vantage point of imperial and postcolonial studies, Todd Kuchta argues that suburban identity is tied to the empire's rise and fall. Like the semi-detached house, which joins separate dwellings under one roof, suburbia and empire were geographically distinct but imaginatively linked. Yet just as the "semi" conceals two homes behind a single façade, suburbia's apparent uniformity masks its defining oppositions--between country and city, "civilization" and "savagery," master and slave.

Illuminating the dark side of the erotic, these interwoven stories explore obsession, violence, and the thin line between sex and death. Under a Mediterranean sun a man searches for the Temple of Zeus as his wife awaits her stalker; a sex worker at an illegal fetish club contemplates her options; a strike spirals out of control with eerie consequences; and a conflict with noisy neighbours reaches theatrical heights. Driven by lust, greed and revenge, chillingly calm or maddened by rage, Patricia Duncker's characters use every tool at their disposal to get what they want. Unapologetically disturbing and provocative like the B movies that inspired them, Seven Tales of Sex and Death holds up a mirror to humanity at its most flawed, ruthless and seductive.
