"Arthur Conan Doyle's name is synonymous with The Strand magazine, chiefly because of the Sherlock Holmes stories but also due to many of his other contributions, such as the Professor Challenger stories, his articles on spiritualism and fairies, and his coverage of the major battles of the First World War. For almost forty years from 1891 until his death in 1930, more than 250 contributions by Doyle appeared in The Strand, including 120 stories, 9 serialized novels, and dozens of other items. This was a considerable proportion of his total writing output, and it is impossible fully to appreciate Conan Doyle's artistic development without considering the context of The Strand, as the magazine published almost all of his most important stories. But it also published essays, commentary and other works that have become unjustly forgotten, overshadowed by the worldwide fame of Sherlock Holmes. Doyle's contributions to The Strand highlight, for example, his abilities as a sportsman--an interest which frequently found its way into his fiction. This book gives a broader picture of Conan Doyle's life and work, focused through the lens of The Strand magazine. It charts his outlook and views, examines his shifting reputation during his lifetime, and assesses how Doyle's contributions to The Strand fit into his overall output as a writer. Doyle and The Strand helped each other to build a successful reputation, together establishing detective fiction as a distinct genre and leading to the growth of the popular fiction magazine as an important medium in the early 20th century."--Dust jacket.

This volume of The Strand Magazine contains Alexander Pushkin's "The Pistol Shot." Just as the characters in the story participate in duels, Alexander Pushkin himself participated in many duels throughout his life; a gunshot wound from a duel ultimately killed him.

From 1891, beginning with ¿The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes,¿ the now legendary and pioneering ¿Strand Magazine¿ began serializing Arthur Conan Doyle¿s matchless tales of detection, featuring the incomparable sleuth patiently assisted by his doggedly loyal and lovably pedantic friend and companion, Dr. Watson. The stories are illustrated by the remarkable Sidney Paget from whom our images of Sherlock Holmes and his world derive and who first equipped Holmes with his famous deerstalker hat. The literary cult of Sherlock Holmes shows no sign of fading with time as each new generation comes to love and revere the penetrating mind and ruthless logic which were the undoing of so many Victorian master criminals. In 1898, The Strand Magazine, one of the most influential publications of the Victorian fin de siècle, deemed best-selling author and editor L.T. Meade a literary “celebrity” and “one of the most industrious writers of modern fiction.” Beginning in 1893 and continuing into the first decade of the twentieth century, Meade’s medical mysteries and thrilling tales of dangerous criminal women appeared in The Strand. There they competed successfully not only with Arthur Conan Doyle’s Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, but also with the works of the most popular writers of the day. The Sorceress of the Strand is one of Meade’s most compelling mysteries, and the first to feature the seductive criminal genius Madame Sara. The Sorceress of the Strand is accompanied in this edition by three other popular stories featuring powerful female criminal protagonists, from gang leaders to spies and terrorists. The historical appendices expand on the stories’ themes of criminality, gender, and political activism. Twenty-eight of the original periodical illustrations are included.
