A concise overview of Spanish America during the colonial era (1492-1825), this study attempts a synthesis of Iberian and Latin American historical narratives within the context of world history. Spanish civilization was transferred to the Americas as Spain imposed its medieval Catholic culture upon the Americas successfully replacing the elite cultures of the Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas. Iberian culture became indigenous by way of cross-culturalization, and Creole elites found independence inevitable once their way of life became defined by American circumstances. Truxillo places emphasis on the big picture through examination of broad developments such as the rise and fall of Pre-Columbian civilizations, Baroque culture in Latin America, and the role of the Enlightenment in Spanish American independence. He details the career of Tlacaelel, the conquest of Mexico, European rivalry in the New World, and the crisis of government in the post-independence period both in Spain and the New World. The study also discusses developments in the fields of cultural studies and World Systems in the context of the acculturation of indigenous peoples to Iberian norms and the evolution of the Seville-based system of trade. Further, it examines the process by which the Bourbon reforms alienated Spanish American elites and prepared the way for independence.

Jethro laid there in the mud on the side of the trench just high enough to get his head over the top. His 303 British-made rifle was cocked and ready to fire. He had his finger on the trigger. Jethro would constantly worry about where his bullets would fall. The mortar and machine gun fire were deafening but not loud enough to drown out the repetitious sound in his head, "Thou shalt not kill, ... Thou Shall Not Kill,.. THOU SHALT NOT KILL.” His fear of the battle going on in his mind was worse than the real battlefield that he was fighting on. He didn’t know how much longer he could fight this battle, in his mind, with his God.. At this point in time there was no way that he could know that he would never point a firearm at any human being again after this day. ...

Throughout the early centuries of Christianity, the Roman government continually tried to suppress the new religion. Ultimately it failed, but only after a long period of struggle, misunderstanding, and persecution. Grant has placed this clash between government and Christianity in the context of the entire history of the policy of Roman rulers concerning religion. Tracing the government's attitude toward foreign religions from the early days of the republic on through the empire, Grant shows how Rome tried to preserve its religious and cultural traditions from all external influences. Thus, there was a long series of legal and judicial precedents for treating Christianity as subversive. The author analyzes these precedents and the particular teachings of Christianity which set the state against it. This is a scholarly study, but it is written with clarity and conciseness. Within its scope is a broad sweep of a dramatic period in religious history, a period which contains many fascinating parallels to the fight for freedom and human rights in the world today.

California has been invaded by three imperial powers: Spain, Mexico, and the United States. Deep California examines in depth the lingering psychological traumas and motifs emanating from that long history of conquest. These unhealed events have not been left in the past: they recur symbolically again and again, growing in intensity as the overbuilt land and its distracted occupiers unconsciously but definitively demonstrate that environmental justice and social justice can no longer be thought of as separate. Pacing crusaders and colonizers from county to county along El Camino Real, Deep California studies the lingering impact of continuous oppression of people and places as images and themes of displacement and exile filter down into architecture, agriculture, politics, art, culture, psychology, and even folklore and dream. Yet within the shadows cast over California also dwell resistance, humor, irony, tragedy, and hope for more heartfelt and soulful connections to this story-rich "land of the sundown sea." "History" is an inadequate term for such a sweeping and deep discovery of how the past informs the present. This work deserves to be read widely by all Californians and Americans, and taken to heart, and the hard lessons applied to all places we inhabit on this stolen land. -Lesley Thomas, author of Flight of the Goose (Far Eastern Press, 2005) "A monumental and much-needed study in depth of the conquest, occupation, traumatization, and animation of the mission cities and counties of coastal California, places which have worked their way into our unsuspecting psyches." -Linda Buzzell, MA, MFT, co-editor of Ecotherapy: Healing with Nature in Mind (Sierra Club Books, 2009)

This volume contains ten essays written by scholars on the relationship between Western and Islamic religion and cultural traditions of war, peace, and the conduct of statecraft. These interdisciplinary and cross-cultural explorations analysis and interpret Islamic traditions including the concept of jihad, define areas of relationship and commonality between these traditions and those of the West, and deal effectively with the lack of correspondence of the two religious and cultural traditions, especially those concerned with defining when war is justified and what limits ought to be observed in just cause warfare.
