Written three years before his death, The Undiscovered Self combines acuity with concision in masterly fashion and is Jung at his very best. Offering clear and crisp insights into some of his major theories, such as the duality of human nature, the unconscious, human instinct and spirituality, Jung warns against the threats of totalitarianism and political and social propaganda to the free-thinking individual. As timely now as when it was first written, Jung's vision is a salutary reminder of why we should not become passive members of the herd. With a new foreword by Sonu Shamdasani.

In The Undiscovered Self Jung explains the essence of his teaching for a readership unfamiliar with his ideas. He highlights the importance of individual responsibility and freedom in the context of today's mass society, and argues that individuals must organize themselves as effectively as the organized mass if they are to resist joining it. To help them achieve this he sets out his influential programme for achieving self-understanding and self-realization. The Undiscovered Self is a book that will awaken many individuals to the new life of the self that Jung visualized.

For this second edition of Civilization in Transition, essential corrections have been made in the text, and the bibliographical references have been brought up to date. This volume contains essays bearing on the contemporary scene and, in particular, on the relation of the individual to society. In the earliest one (1918), Jung advanced the theory that the European conflict was basically a psychological crisis originating in the collective unconscious of individuals. He pursued this theory in papers written during the '20s and '30s, focusing on the upheaval in Germany, and he gave it a much wider application in two major works of his last years ^DDL The Undiscovered Self, concerned with the relation between the individual and a mass society, and Flying Saucers, on the birth of a myth which Jung regarded as compensating the scientistic trends of our technological era. An appendix contains documents relating to Jung's association with the International General Medical Society for Psychotherapy.

Though it has won the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, and the Bollingen Prize, the poetry of Robert Penn Warren still is not widely or well understood. In this study, Victor H. Strandberg redresses this imbalance by providing a comprehensive survey of the poetic canon of this gifted, complex, and much-neglected poet. Warren writes in the tradition of Western poets concerned with the painful experience of a forced, one-way passage from innocence into "the world's stew" of time and loss. This passage, Strandberg explains, results for Warren in bifurcation of the self into warring segments: a "clean" idealistic surface ego, and a polluted "undiscovered self" in the unconscious. Revelation of the "dirty" part of human personality is tellingly evoked in many of Warren's major works. As the poet's vision expands, however, these conflicting elements are unified in a "mystic osmosis of being" whereby "the world which once provoked... fear and disgust may now be totally loved." In addition to close analysis both of individual poems and of the poet's overall development, Strandberg reviews critical opinion of Warren's poetry over the last three decades and assesses his place among fellow poets. Both as "prophecy" and as "art," he concludes, Robert Penn Warren's poetry is so significant, versatile, and excellent "as to rank him among the finest and most fertile talents of his age."

What does it mean for an individual to truly be, to truly do, and to truly live? What is the relation between true being, doing, and living? These are among the most fundamental questions pondered by man. We may be told that we become what we do in life. The simplicity and apparent clarity of this sentiment make it appealing. But what if the currents of the streams of being and doing run in conflict rather than in tandem? And how much does necessity interfere with ones search for being? In light of many of todays problems and questions, it is evident that no simple formula will serve as a complete solution. If one cannot go as far as discovering true being just yet, one can approach nearer to an answer by investigating the concept of becoming, the origins of being. The four essays of this work explore the nature of the problem of individual being, the unique obstacles to its realization, the phenomenon of self-priming and cultural creation, and the related challenges with which we are faced today.
