'Totally gripping'-- Simon Sebag Montefiore ‘Pilecki is perhaps one of the greatest unsung heroes of the second world war ... this insightful book is likely to be the definitive version of this extraordinary life’ -- Economist Would you sacrifice yourself to save thousands of others? In the Summer of 1940, after the Nazi occupation of Poland, an underground operative called Witold Pilecki accepted a mission to uncover the fate of thousands of people being interned at a new concentration camp on the border of the Reich. His mission was to report on Nazi crimes and raise a secret army to stage an uprising. The name of the detention centre -- Auschwitz. It was only after arriving at the camp that he started to discover the Nazi’s terrifying plans. Over the next two and half years, Witold forged an underground army that smuggled evidence of Nazi atrocities out of Auschwitz. His reports from the camp were to shape the Allies response to the Holocaust - yet his story was all but forgotten for decades. This is the first major account to draw on unpublished family papers, newly released archival documents and exclusive interviews with surviving resistance fighters to show how he brought the fight to the Nazis at the heart of their evil designs. The result is an enthralling story of resistance and heroism against the most horrific circumstances, and one man’s attempt to change the course of history.

The Volunteer Adventures of Ed and Sara Unger Stoesz details forty seven years of service of a Mennonite couple from Altona, Manitoba. In addition to their work as electrician and home maker, Ed and Sara each have given ten years of their lives to volunteering in their home community and abroad. From Sara Stoesz helping in 1972 to start a Mennonite Central Committee Self-Help Store, to Ed Stoesz going in 1975 to Paraguay to help set up a radio station, their volunteer service over the last forty-seven years exemplifies a desire to help others on the basis of their Christian faith. Their selfless vision and commitment have inspired their children to publish a book of their exploits. The book has been written to honour their parents, give inspiration to their grandchildren, and give thanks and encouragement to all people who give of their time for others.

This is the best account of the life of an IRA volunteer yet written. The Irish Times No better explanation of why ordinary people turn to terrorism has ever been written. O'Doherty's compelling story is a brilliant, firsthand account of how the boy next door became a bomber...O'Doherty traces his early involvement with the IRA with disarming honesty and humour...Most riveting, however, is the story of his disillusion with the romance of republicanism and his complete denunciation of violence...The Volunteer is an excellent study of the civilian turned terrorist turned civilian. The Catholic Herald O'Doherty gives a graphic account of the making of an IRA man. Perhaps the book's greatest strength, and no doubt the feature that, as O'Doherty predicts, will irritate, is the emotional tone in which the story is told. He tells it how he saw and felt it at the time. When he is a stubborn, impetuous youth, he recounts as a stubborn, impetuous youth. When he is a blinkered perpetrator of callous violence, he recounts as a blinkered perpetrator of callous violence. When he becomes an older-but-wiser committed pacifist, the tone shifts yet again to reflect that incarnation. The Independent (London) About the Author: Shane O'Doherty joined the IRA at 15 years of age and was later arrested. He was one of the first prisoners to work his way past the negativity of the philosophy of armed struggle, beginning to recommend publicly and privately an end to violence and a full engagement with the democratic process. From his prison cell, O'Doherty courageously wrote letters of apology to his victims. He was released after serving 14 years and read for a degree in English at Trinity College, Dublin. From Book's Introduction: Firefighting continues to be one of the nation's most dangerous and hazardous jobs with heart attacks, high physical stress levels, and sprains and strains all too common. In the past five years, the fire service has focused its attention on overcoming these issues by working to change the service's culture. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has spent much time redeveloping and revamping their health and wellness standards, while career departments have been working with the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) and International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) on a wellness initiative that began in 1997. Volunteer personnel also face similar risks when it comes to health and wellness. The nature of member time constraints and tight departmental budgets in the volunteer service often inhibits the creation of comprehensive health and wellness programs. Implementing a comprehensive health and wellness program could overwhelm the resources of many volunteer departments. Time, lack of program leadership, and insufficient funding pose serious challenges to most departments, which often struggle to deliver basic fire suppression capabilities. This guide provides the rationale and suggestions for successfully implementing a health and wellness program volunteer service. It also addresses many common roadblocks.
