Chef Cory Schreiber opened the Wildwood restaurant in Portland five years ago and has rapidly become a leading figure in the region's bustling culinary scene -- winning the James Beard Award in 1998 for Best Chef: Pacific Northwest. Schreiber emphasizes organic produce prepared in ways that allow the natural beauty and flavors of the ingredients to shine forth, unobstructed by fussy embellishments. With its lavish food and landscape photography, inspired recipes, and passionate personal narrative, Wildwood presents the dishes that have earned Mr. Schreiber national acclaim, and offers a window into the source of his creativity.

High in the Transylvanian woods, at the castle Piscul Draculi, live five daughters and their doting father. It's an idyllic life for Jena, the second eldest, who spends her time exploring the mysterious forest with her constant companion, a most unusual frog. But best by far is the castle's hidden portal, known only to the sisters. Every Full Moon, they alone can pass through it into the enchanted world of the Other Kingdom. There they dance through the night with the fey creatures of this magical realm. But their peace is shattered when Father falls ill and must go to the southern parts to recover, for that is when cousin Cezar arrives. Though he's there to help the girls survive the brutal winter, Jena suspects he has darker motives in store. Meanwhile, Jena's sister has fallen in love with a dangerous creature of the Other Kingdom--an impossible union it's up to Jena to stop. When Cezar's grip of power begins to tighten, at stake is everything Jena loves: her home, her family, and the Other Kingdom she has come to cherish. To save her world, Jena will be tested in ways she can't imagine--tests of trust, strength, and true love.

This book is a collection of sermons, reminisces, and prayers, by a former Lay Leader of a small rural non-denominational Christian chapel or church. The author had no formal training. He was asked to fill in for the preacher who was afflicted with cancer of the larynx. The author joined another country church, this time of an organized Christian religion (United Methodist Denomination). He was greatly inspired by the minister, the religion, and the people, and decided to take the Lay Leader training offered by the Conference. Just about the time that he was certified as Lay Leader he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. Since this is a neurological disease, and it affects the speech, and enunciation he could not properly preach or deliver a sermon. Hence it gave rise to this book, the written word in place of the spoken word.

Presently known for horse farms, forward-thinking urban planning, and high end housing, Wildwood-steeped in history and natural beauty-invented itself in the early 1990s to become one of Missouri's newest and largest cities. Author Jo Beck digs into the city's rich past in Wildwood, the latest installment of the Reedy Community Series. Beck presents the history of this unique city located at the foothills of the Ozark Mountains but not far from metropolitan St. Louis. Readers learn about the Virginia settlers and German farmers who tamed the forested wilderness. They also encounter rare details on other defining characteristics: Route 66 roadways, company towns, the clubhouse era, a group of committed treehuggers and the westward expansion of the city of St. Louis. Illustrated with dozens of vintage maps and photos, the book is must-have for prospective and current residents as well as anyone interested in St. Louis history.

Here, published for the first time in the United States, is the last book by Roger Deakin, famed British nature writer and icon of the environmentalist movement. In Deakin's glorious meditation on wood, the "fifth element" -- as it exists in nature, in our culture, and in our souls -- the reader accompanies Deakin through the woods of Britain, Europe, Kazakhstan, and Australia in search of what lies behind man's profound and enduring connection with trees. Deakin lives in forest shacks, goes "coppicing" in Suffolk, swims beneath the walnut trees of the Haut-Languedoc, and hunts bushplums with Aboriginal women in the outback. Along the way, he ferrets out the mysteries of woods, detailing the life stories of the timber beams composing his Elizabethan house and searching for the origin of the apple. As the world's forests are whittled away, Deakin's sparkling prose evokes woodlands anarchic with life, rendering each tree as an individual, living being. At once a traveler's tale and a splendid work of natural history, Wildwood reveals, amid the world's marvelous diversity, that which is universal in human experience.

A single mother. An abandoned farmhouse. An epic battle with the northern wilderness. Broke and desperate, Molly Bannister accepts the ironclad condition laid down in her great-aunt’s will: to receive her inheritance, Molly must spend one year in an abandoned, off-the-grid farmhouse in the remote backwoods of northern Alberta. If she does, she will be able to sell the farm and fund her four-year-old daughter’s badly needed medical treatment. With grim determination, Molly teaches herself basic homesteading skills. But her greatest perils come from the brutal wilderness itself, from blizzards to grizzly bears. Will she and her child survive the savage winter? Will she outsmart the idealist young farmer who would thwart her plan to sell the farm? Not only their financial future, but their very lives are at stake. Only the journal written by Molly's courageous great-aunt, the land’s original homesteader, inspires her to struggle on.
