The first supplement volume eomplements the 20 volumes on boron eompounds (Borverbin dungen) that have been published within the New Supplement Series (Erg.-Werk) of the eighth edition of the Gmelin Handbook by uniformly updating the literature eoverage to the end of 1977. Icosahedral carboranes, a class of boron-rich clusters, are kinetically stabilized by the multicenter-2-electron delocalized bonding mode. The resulting 3-dimensional -aromaticity of the carboranes are analogous to the two-dimensional aromaticity of benzene, yet sterically these clusters are more comparable to adamantane. The composition of carboranes which contains two carbon vertices and ten boron vertices contributes to the unique anisotropic -aromaticity. This anisotropic -aromaticity, combined with steric hindrance, make carboranes an interesting molecular scaffolding for medicinal chemistry research. In this thesis, starting from B(9) brominated o-and m-carboranes, a Pd-catalyzed cross-coupling strategy has been developed to incorporate a series of N-containing nucleophiles with diverse electronic properties. This advancement further enriches the library of carborane structures. By using a Pd-catalyzed cyanation of 9-bromo-m-carboranes established by our group, we have successfully introduced the carborane moiety into histone deacetylase inhibitor as a new three-dimensional capping group. Initial cell study has shown carbonyl inhibitors have similar or decreased toxicity compared to their adamantyl analog.

The 3rd supplement continues the updating of the original 20 volumes on boron compounds published between 1974 and 1979. The first supplement consisting of 3 volumes covered all the literature uniformly up to the end of 1977, whereas the two volumes of the 2nd supplement have extended the literature coverage of boron compounds to 1980 and the four volumes of the 3rd supplement to 1984. The present volume continues the description of boron compounds with halogens, presenting those with chlorine, bromine and iodine. The compounds with chalcogens are completed here along with those of boron with S, Se, Te and Po. Volume 4 of the 3rd supplement brings this supplement series to an end. Molecular clusters, in the broad sense that the term is commonly understood, today comprise an enormous class of species extending into virtually every important area of chemistry: "naked" metal clusters, transition metal carbonyl clusters, hydrocarbon cages such as cubane (C H ) and dodecahedrane (C H ), 8 8 20 20 organometallic cluster complexes, enzymes containing Fe S or MoFe S 4 4 3 4 cores, high polymers based on carborane units, and, of course, the many kinds of polyhedral borane species. So large is the area spanned by these diverse classes that any attempt to deal with them comprehensively in one volume would, to say the least, be ambitious-and also premature. We are presently at a stage where intriguing relationships between the various cluster families are becoming apparent (particularly in terms of bonding descriptions), and despite large dif ferences in their chemistry an underlying unity is gradually developing in the field. For example, structural changes occurring in Fe S cores as electrons are 4 4 pumped in and out, in some measure resemble those observed in boranes and carboranes. The cleavage of alkynes via incorporation into carborane cages and subsequent cage rearrangement, a sequence familiar to boron chemists, is a thermodynamically favored process which may be related to the behavior of unsaturated hydrocarbons on metal surfaces; analogies of this sort have drawn attention from theorists and experimentalists.

This thesis describes research carried out on compounds containing icosahedral carborane moieties (ortho/meta/para-CB10H10C-), investigating their photophysical and electrochemical properties. The ortho carborane cage is shown to play an active role in the fluorescence and electrochemical reduction properties. Meta and para carborane groups, however, chiefly act as spectators. Chapter one gives an overview of carboranes in the literature, highlighting the syntheses, photophysical and electrochemical studies done previously on C-aryl-carboranes. Chapter two describes the syntheses of naphthyl carboranes. Ortho di-naphthyl carborane displays emission with a large Stokes shift, while the meta and para isomers emit with a small Stokes shift. Ortho monosubstituted naphthyl carborane, by contrast, displays two distinct fluorescent emission bands, with large and small Stokes shifts. TD-DFT calculations reveal that the two emission bands can be attributed to two different S1 excited states formed on excitation. The low energy band is due to a geometry in which the cage C-C length is elongated. The high energy band is due to a closed cage conformation in which the cage C-C bond length is smaller. In chapter three the syntheses and fluorescence emission of carboranyl triarylamines are investigated. Meta and para carboranyl triarylamines are found to emit in DCM solution, giving higher fluorescence quantum yields than the non-cluster triarylamines. Emission of ortho carboranyl triarylamine, with a large Stokes shift, is observed in 1:99 THF:H2O solution, due to aggregation induced emission. The S1 excited state geometry is calculated to have an extended cage C-C length. Chapter four investigates the syntheses and fluorescence of some bridged ortho carborane compounds of the type (1-R-1,2-C2B10H10)2X, where X=1,1'- (C6H4)2/C4SH2/C6H4 or C6F4. These compounds are found to give a broad range of emission maxima, from 355 to 763 nm in THF:H2O solutions. Chapter five looks at the electrochemistry of some simple carboranes, naphthyl carboranes, carboranyl triarylamines and bridged carboranes. Calculations of the cage C-C bond lengths are shown to be successful at predicting trends in the reduction potentials of simple carboranes. On reduction to a dianion, the cage C-C bond length is elongated as the carborane cage opens up to accommodate the additional electrons. The greater the cage C-C bond length in the ground state, the greater the ease with which the reduction occurs. Dinapthyl ortho carborane displays formation of a radical anion before further reduction to the dianion, as reported for di-phenyl ortho carborane. Bridged carboranes where X=C6H4/C6F4/C4SH2 display communication between carborane cages and suggest considerable bridge involvement.
