Comprises a selection of articles on interactions between earthquakes and the soil in which they propagate. The book is concerned with soil composition and geomechanical features, which affect earthquake propagation and intensity; it also addresses detrimental effects of seismic shaking on soil properties and stability. Modelling is applied to investigate the effects of cracks and various types of soil damping on seismic waves. Elastic, poroelastic, elasto-plastic, constitutive models are adopted in conjunction with rigorous mathematical techniques or approximate methods such as boundary elements or finite differences. A substantial part of this volume is dedicated to soil liquefaction, an important consequent of seismic shaking that results in substantial loss of soil strength and stiffness. Criteria are proposed for assessing the liquefaction potential of a site. Data collected from soil samples, either in the laboratory or in-situ, are analysed to provide values for the critical parameters on which liquefaction depends. The occurrence of landslides is addressed by assessing slope stability through a systematic geophysical and geotechnical characterisation of the soil mass followed by finite element modelling. The bearing capacity of the soil is directly obtained by laboratory testing of soil samples, as well as from reliable empirical relations generated by combining such test data with in-situ measurements of soil dynamic properties.

Almost 50% of the total area of Austria is forested, and the forests are dominated by commercially valuable stands of Norway spruce ((Picea abies). The few remaining forests that resemble the natural vegetation composition are located in forest reserves with restricted management. These natural forests are used as reference systems for evaluating silvicultural research on sustainable forest management. Natural forests are expected to have high biodiversity, where the structural richness of the habitat enables complex relationships between fauna, flora, and microflora. They also provide refugia for rare plants and animals found only in natural forest types. Austria had 180 of these forest reserves up to the year 2003. Most of these forests are privately owned, and owners are compensated by the government for loss of income associated with conservation status. The Ministerial Conference for the Protection of Forest Ecosystems (MCPFE) has launched a world-wide network of protected forest areas which should cover all major forest types (MCPFE and UNECE/FAO, 2003). The sites selected for our investigation of soil conditions and communities were chosen by vegetation ecologists and soil scientists. The stands have developed under natural competition conditions with no management interventions. All sites were well documented with known forest history. Our set of sites spans gradients of environmental conditions as well as species composition, providing a realistic evaluation of the interactions of biotic and abiotic factors.

Soil acidity is a major limitation to crop production in many parts of the world. Plant growth inhibition results from a combination of factors, including aluminum, manganese, and hydrogen ion toxicities and deficiencies of essential elements, particularly calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, and molybdenum. Agricultural management practices and acid precipitation have increased acid inputs into the ecosystem and heightened concern about soil acidity problems. While application of lime has proved to be effective in ameliorating surface soil acidity in many areas, significant soil acidity problems still exist. Scientists from Alberta, Canada, recognized the need to provide a forum for researchers from different disciplines to exchange information and ideas on solving problems of plant growth in acid soils. As a result of their efforts, the First International Symposium on Plant-Soil Interactions at Low pH was held at Grande Prairie, Alberta, Canada, in July 1987. In many acid soil areas, liming materials are not readily available, the cost may be prohibitive, or subsoil acidity cannot be corrected by surface application of lime. New management approaches involving both the plant and the soil are needed in these situations. Progress has been made in the selection and breeding of acid-tolerant plants. However, continued progress will be limited by our lack of understanding of the physiological and biochemical basis of differential acidity tolerance among plants.
