The classic authority on colour measurement now fully revised and updated with the latest CIE recommendations The measurement of colour is of major importance in many commercial applications, such as the textile, paint, and foodstuff industries; as well as having a significant role in the lighting, paper, printing, cosmetic, plastics, glass, chemical, photographic, television, transport, and communication industries. Building upon the success of earlier editions, the 4th edition of Measuring Colour has been updated throughout with new chapters on colour rendering by light sources; colorimetry with digital cameras; factors affecting the appearance of coloured objects, and details of new CIE colour appearance models. Key features: Presents colour measurement, not simply as a matter of instrumentation and engineering, but also involving the physiology and psychology of the human observer. Covers the principles of colour measurement rather than a guide to instruments. Provides the reader with the basic facts needed to measure colour. Describes and explains the interactions between how colour is affected by the type of lighting, by the nature of the objects illuminated, and by the properties of the colour vision of observers. Includes many worked examples, and a series of Appendices provides the numerical data needed in many colorimetric calculations. The addition of 4th edition co-author, Dr. Pointer, has facilitated the inclusion of extensive practical advice on measurement procedures and the latest CIE recommendations.

2003 Paul Bunge Prize of the Hans R. Jenemann Foundation for the History of Scientific Instruments Judging the brightness and color of light has long been contentious. Alternately described as impossible and routine, it was beset by problems both technical and social. How trustworthy could such measurements be? Was the best standard of intensity a gas lamp, an incandescent bulb, or a glowing pool of molten metal? And how much did the answers depend on the background of the specialist? A History of Light and Colour Measurement: Science in the Shadows is a history of the hidden workings of physical science-a technical endeavor embedded in a social context. It argues that this "undisciplined" subject, straddling academia, commerce, and regulation, may be typical not only of 20th century science, but of its future. Attracting scientists, engineers, industrialists, and artists, the developing subject produced a new breed of practitioners having mixed provenance. The new measurers of light had to decide the shape not only of their specialism but of their careers: were they to be a part of physics, engineering, or psychology? The physical scientists who dominated the subject into the early 20th century made their central aim the replacement of the problematic human eye with physical detectors of light. For psychologists between the wars, though, describing the complexity of color was more important than quantifying a handful of its dimensions. And after WWII, military designers shaped the subject of radiometry and subsumed photometry and colorimetry within it. Never attaining a professional cachet, these various specialists moved fluidly between science and technology; through government, industry, and administration.

To meet growing demand, the FAO has estimated that world poultry production needs to grow by 2-3% per year to 2030. Much of the increase in output already achieved has been as a result of improvements in commercial breeds combined with rearing in more intensive production systems. However, more intensive systems and complex supply chains have increased the risk of rapid transmission of animal diseases and zoonoses. Consumer expectations of sensory and nutritional quality have never been higher. At the same time consumers are more concerned about the environmental impact of poultry production as well as animal welfare. Drawing on an international range of expertise, this book reviews research on safety, quality and sustainability issues in poultry production. Part 1 discusses risks from pathogens, detection and safety management on farms and in slaughterhouse operations. Part 2 looks at ways of enhancing the flavour, colour, texture and nutritional quality of poultry meat. Finally, the book reviews the environmental impact of poultry production. Achieving sustainable production of poultry meat Volume 1: Safety, quality and sustainability will be a standard reference for poultry and food scientists in universities, government and other research centres and companies involved in poultry production. It is accompanied by two further volumes which review poultry breeding, nutrition, health and welfare.

Color is one of the most significant cues used by consumers to determine the quality of a food. While color is usually assumed to be a property of the food itself, it is actually the individual's response to the visual signals generated by light on the product. An authoritative reference can best explain the ways that food color and quality are assessed and how they can be improved to benefit consumers and the food industry. This book reviews how color is perceived and measured, discusses food color chemistry and stability, and presents ways that color can be better controlled in food. Part one introduces the concept of the total appearance of food and examines the principles of instrumental color measurement, models of color appearance, color measurement by color reflectance, and sorting by color. Part two covers color control in food, focusing on the chemistry of food colorants, color stability, genetic modification for color enhancement, and developments in natural colorings.

Endorsed by the Society of Light and Lighting, this practical bookoffers comprehensive guidance on how colour, light and contrast canbe incorporated within buildings to enhance their usability. Thebook provides state-of-the-art, clear guidance as well as avaluable information source for busy professionals involved in thedesign or management of new and existing environments. The ways colour, light and contrast are used within builtenvironments are critical in determining how people interact withthe space, and how confident, safe, and secure they will feel whendoing so. They also have a major influence on a person’ssense of well-being and their ability to use the environmentindependently and without undue effort. Understanding how to use colour and contrast and how they areinfluenced by both natural and artificial lighting is vital for allthose involved in the design and management of the environments andspaces we all use. In recent years there has been a considerable amount of workundertaken to further our understanding of how colour, light andcontrast affect emotion and sensory abilities, and how they canassist or hinder people in their everyday lives. Other publications consider these issues individually but TheColour, Light and Contrast Manual: designing and managing inclusivebuilt environments draws knowledge and information together toproduce a unique, comprehensive and informative guide to how thethree elements can work together to improve the design andmanagement of environments for us all. Numerous areas of expertise are often required for the inspection of an individual product, with many different sensors being used within a single inspection machine. For this reason it is necessary for the production engineer to have at least a working knowledge of all the different technologies that may be employed. This book covers the majority of sensors that can be applied on the shop floor and has been designed to assist engineers with little or no previous experience in the various fields. The information that the book contains is of a highly practical nature and is based on the author's considerable first-hand experience of varied industrial applications.

Color is attractive and interesting to everyone. Consequently, control of color is important to all producers, buyers, sellers, and users of colored materials. In various ways, color is an indication of freshness, quality, or other desirable (or undesirable) characteristics of goods. To assure acceptability, saleability, and favorable price - especially in contracts and monitoring of conformance to specifications - numerical expression of color is greatly superior to verbal descriptions. Disagreements concerning words or visual comparisons with samples are all too likely and frequent. Such disagreements underlie much un pleasantness and loss in commerce in consumer goods. Such loss of money and good will must amount to billions of dollars per year, world wide. Persistent efforts to substitute measurements of color for visual judgment have marked the twentieth century. Because visual perception of small color differences is so acute, the requirements for accuracy and world-wide repro ducibility of color measurements have been severe. Only during the last half century have practical spectrophotometers with adequate accuracy been avail able.
