Computational Radon Transport Mechanisms considers various mathematical modeling techniques for understanding radon transport mechanisms across various mediums, including soil, concrete, and water. Organized clearly by types of problems, including steady and unsteady states, inverse problems, and uncertainty, the book provides clear solutions to understanding and analyzing radon transport mechanisms. Generally, radon transport mechanisms are modeled by corresponding equations of flux represented by ordinary and/or partial differential equations and may also be governed by linear/nonlinear differential equations. Recent advances have proposed different analytical, semi-analytical, and numerical techniques handling such differential equations that govern radon diffusion-advection. As such, this book considers various mathematical models of radon transport. Covering various computational methods for modeling transport mechanisms in general and diffusion as well as advection equations in particular, Computational Radon Transport Mechanisms provides researchers working in environmental science, earth science, physics, chemistry, applied mathematics, and health with various analytical/numerical computational methods for solving different models governing radon transport. Describes radon transport mechanisms in various mediums Provides a systematic understanding of mathematical formulations and numerical/analytical modeling of radon transport problems Offers new inverse approaches to estimate the parameters of radon transport

In general, every problem of science and engineering is governed by mathematical models. There is often a need to model, solve and interpret the problems one encounters in the world of practical problems. Models of practical application problems usually need to be handled by efficient computational models. New Paradigms in Computational Modeling and Its Applications deals with recent developments in mathematical methods, including theoretical models as well as applied science and engineering. The book focuses on subjects that can benefit from mathematical methods with concepts of simulation, waves, dynamics, uncertainty, machine intelligence, and applied mathematics. The authors bring together leading-edge research on mathematics combining various fields of science and engineering. This perspective acknowledges the inherent characteristic of current research on mathematics operating in parallel over different subject fields. New Paradigms in Computational Modeling and Its Applications meets the present and future needs for the interaction between various science and technology/engineering areas on the one hand and different branches of mathematics on the other. As such, the book contains 13 chapters covering various aspects of computational modeling from theoretical to application problems. The first six chapters address various problems of structural and fluid dynamics. The next four chapters include solving problems where the governing parameters are uncertain regarding fuzzy, interval, and affine. The final three chapters will be devoted to the use of machine intelligence in artificial neural networks. Presents a self-contained and up to date review of modelling real life scientific and engineering application problems Introduces new concepts of various computing techniques to handle different engineering and science problems Demonstrates the efficiency and power of the various algorithms and models in a simple and easy to follow style, including numerous examples to illustrate concepts and algorithms

This book addresses the basics of interval/fuzzy set theory, artificial neural networks (ANN) and computational methods. It presents step-by-step modeling for application problems along with simulation and numerical solutions. In general, every science and engineering problem is inherently biased by uncertainty, and there is often a need to model, solve and interpret problems in the world of uncertainty. At the same time, exact information about models and parameters of practical applications is usually not known and precise values do not exist. This book discusses uncertainty in both data and models. It consists of seven chapters covering various aspects of fuzzy uncertainty in application problems, such as shallow water wave equations, static structural problems, robotics, radon diffusion in soil, risk of invasive alien species and air quality quantification. These problems are handled by means of advanced computational and fuzzy theory along with machine intelligence when the uncertainties involved are fuzzy. The proposed computational methods offer new fuzzy computing methods that help other areas of knowledge construction where inexact information is present.

Cave mining involves the undermining of an ore body to initiate a controlled collapse, which caves the ore under the influence of its own weight. In ore bodies with uranium mineralization, a by-product of the process can be the release of radon, a radioactive and potentially hazardous gas, into the mine environment. Due to the dynamics related to the caving method, it is difficult to investigate these conditions from field studies or laboratory scale model studies. Therefore, this study develops numerical models for investigating radon transport through fractured rocks and different stages of a cave mine. The emanation of radon from rocks involves transport due to diffusion and advection. A new method for predicting radon flux through fractured rock considering both transport mechanisms is developed. The approach is implemented, and fractured rocks are analyzed, using a discrete fracture network (DFN). Commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software is used to investigate proactive measures of mitigating radon in a developing block cave mine and a fully developed panel cave mine.

Radon is a highly radioactive gas and a waste product of nuclear reactors. Radon is also carcinogenic for this reason and can be linked to the incidence of lung cancer in non smoking individuals who often spend time indoors. Assessment and Mitigation of Indoor Radon Problem is a case book for professionals who are interested in modeling the distribution of Radon gas in a real environment. The book is a collection of results taken from a survey of locations in the US state of Ohio. The data in this case book is based is based on the homes and mitigation databases of the Ohio Radon Information System (ORIS), maintained by the Air Pollution Research Group (APRG) at The University of Toledo in Toledo. This case book will be of interest to software engineers and environmental health workers seeking to build a geographic information system for tracking radioactive waste that can contaminate residential areas, particularly household indoors.
