Offering a twenty-first century perspective on twentieth-century Europe, pre-eminent scholar Bonnie Smith's engaging new synthesis is the first text to provide both a thorough integration of social and cultural material with political history and substantive treatment of Europe's broader global context. Each of the twelve chapters combines compelling narrative with a wonderfully rich set of primary texts and picture essays, reinforcing for students the importance of primary sources to the study of history. Neither overtly triumphalist nor disparaging, this even-handed and thoughtful account takes the full measure of Europe's negative and positive legacies at home and its impact on and interactions with the world at large.

In "The Contemporary Global Economy," Alfred Eckes provides a lively overview of recent turbulence in the world economy for non-specialists. Focusing on the dynamics of globalization since the 1980s, the book views developments historically, explaining how the main motors of economic change work and how we can discern their effects in the world today. Eckes begins with a brief description of economic change since the nineteenth century, the age of the 'first global economy', and indicates how the dramatic change in the world economy since the 1980s led to a new era in global expansion with the rise of China and other emerging powers. He explains how structural imbalances, policy mistakes, and excesses led to the financial crisis of 2007-2010. The book describes the different aspects of the economy from the role of the World Trade Organization to the workings of financial markets, and the actions of the International Monetary Fund and the Group of Twenty nations. It explains the underlying changes that have affected individuals in their various roles as consumers, producers, workers and citizens around the world, and identifies the challenges for sustainable economic growth in the years ahead. It also examines the underside of globalization, including human trafficking, sweatshops, organized crime, unsafe products, and environmental destruction.

In an era defined by daily polls, institutional rankings, and other forms of social quantification, it can be easy to forget that comparison has a long historical lineage. Presenting a range of multidisciplinary perspectives, this volume investigates the concepts and practices of comparison from the early modern period to the present. Each chapter demonstrates how comparison has helped to drive the seemingly irresistible dynamism of the modern world, exploring how comparatively minded assessors determine their units of analysis, the criteria they select or ignore, and just who it is that makes use of these comparisons—and to what ends.

It is a matter of great pleasure in placing the book of American history, Title, 'America and Contemporary History. History is the study of the human past. Historians study records of conditions or events of a particular time and place. The United States of America is at once a very new nation and a very old nation. The first settlers - Asian hunters and nomads - reached North America about 30,000 years ago. However, the United States of America did not come into being until 1776 with the Declaration of Independence. The history of the United States is the story of many different peoples who together compose the United States of America. Since the first Europeans arrived in 1492, millions of people from many different countries have entered the United States and made the country their new home. Because the best predictor of the future is the record of the past, we can learn much of value even when the need for such learning is not immediately apparent. Once the inevitable crisis is upon us, it may be difficult to reflect soberly on what we can learn from the past. As philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel said, "Amid the pressure of great events, a general principle gives no help." A modern version of that dictum, often used in a military context, goes something like this: "It's hard to remember that your mission is to drain the swamp when you’re up to your butt in alligators." In any case, without looking backward, we may find the road ahead quite murky.
