This publication is organized in an exceptional way: Each chapter introduces several completed clinical trials and provides the original conclusions and discussions of the results. The authors then contribute their own comments and interpretations of the findings, challenging the prevailing belief that serum cholesterol is a mediator of disease which is increased by eating saturated fats and decreased by eating polyunsaturated fats. They argue that upon closer scrutiny, the diet recommendations based on the cholesterol hypothesis are essentially ineffective in reducing serum cholesterol levels in the long run. Instead, it is proposed that traditional cholesterol biomarkers are of different significance in short- and long-term interventions due to the feedback control mechanisms in the body. Even more important, the association of high serum cholesterol values with high coronary heart disease mortality is not consistent when different populations are compared: This mortality rate may simply reflect the incidence and severity of familial hypercholesterolemia cases. This agrees with the observation that higher serum cholesterol values associate with lower cancer and all-cause mortalities in populations with a low relative proportion of this disorder. Thus, there seems to be no benefit of limiting dietary cholesterol intake or lowering serum cholesterol values below a certain limit. Moreover, evidence has been found that the health risk results from high intakes of calories, aggravated by an unbalanced intake of omega6/omega3 polyunsaturated fats. Based on the reviewed data, new directions of lipid nutrition are recommended for the primary and secondary prevention of coronary heart disease, cancer and all-cause deaths, which will likely revolutionize current dietary practice.

Cardiovascular disease is ranked as the leading cause of death world wide, responsible for 17.1 million deaths globally each year. Such numbers are often difficult to comprehend. Heart disease kills one person every 34 seconds in the USA alone. Although the leading killer, the incidence of cardiovascular disease has declined in recent years due to a better understanding of the pathology, implementation of lipid lowering therapy new drug regimens including low molecular weight heparin and antiplatelet drugs such as glycoprotein IIb/IIIa receptor inhibitors and acute surgical intervention. The disease burden has a great financial impact on global healthcare systems and major economic consequences for world economies. This text aims to deliver the current understanding of coronary artery disease and is split into three main sections: 1. Epidemiology and pathophysiology of coronary artery disease 2. Coronary artery disease diagnostics and 3. Treatment regimens for coronary artery disease

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in Western countries. In non-fatal cases, they are associated with a decreased quality of life as well as a substantial economic burden to society. Most sudden cardiac events are related to the complications of a non-stenosing marginal plaque. For this reason, the ability to properly identify the atherosclerotic plaque with a rapid, non-invasive technique is of utmost clinical interest in therapeutic planning. Coronary CT angiography produces high-quality images of the coronary arteries, in addition to defining their location and the extent of the atherosclerotic involvement. Proper knowledge of the equipment, adequate preparation of the patient, and accurate evaluation of the images are essential to obtaining a consistent clinical diagnosis in every case. With its clear and concise presentation of CT imaging of the coronary arteries, this volume provides general practitioners and cardiologists with a basic understanding of the technique. For radiologists with no direct experience in cardiac imaging, the book serves as an important source of information on coronary pathophysiology and anatomy.

Coronary Heart Disease: Clinical, Pathological, Imaging, and Molecular Profiles presents a comprehensive picture of ischemic heart disease for practitioners, students, and investigators dealing with the varied facets of this complex subject. Individual chapters introduce the anatomy of the coronary blood vessels and cardiac development, while others consider current imaging modalities utilized for ischemic heart disease, including stress echo, nuclear diagnostic tests, non-invasive coronary artery imaging, and coronary angiography. Imaging chapters provide key clinical information on techniques and indications, and include examples of both normal and abnormal patterns. The principle thrust of the book concerns coronary atherosclerosis, the pathology of which is presented in conjunction with the results of anatomic, non-invasive imaging and angiographic studies. Related chapters cover atherogenesis, presenting new insights into the pathophysiology of the vulnerable plaque, the role of progenitor cells in vascular injury, inflammation and atherogenesis, and the genomics of vascular remodeling. Additional topics covered include angina pectoris, acute coronary syndromes, healed myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure, catheter-based and surgical revascularization, and surgical treatment of myocardial infarction and its sequelae. With contributions from a diverse group of internationally-known physicians with broad experience in the diagnosis and treatment of coronary heart disease, this book will be a valuable resource for practitioners in clinical cardiology, thoracic surgery, pathology, and cardiovascular molecular research, as well as for students in training.

Coronary artery atherosclerosis is the most common cardiac pathology, which is the primary cause of cardiac mortality. Coronary artery stenosis usually involves the proximal portion of the larger epicardial coronary arteries, but diffuse coronary artery disease is also not rare. Most of the patients with/without several comorbidities have asymptomatic atherosclerotic lesions in the coronary territory, and hence early assessment of coronary artery pathology is of utmost importance. Since early surgical intervention is superior to percutaneous interventions, coronary artery bypass grafting is the first choice for the treatment of coronary artery disease. Coronary revascularization can be performed with different approaches according to the patients risk factors. Preventive treatment of coronary artery disease should be the basic strategy for a healthy system.

Coronary artery disease, or more commonly known as heart disease, is usually a result of plaque buildup in coronary arteries, a condition called atherosclerosis. This book covers original research with a clinical emphasis as well as advances in laboratory research that contribute to the understanding of coronary artery disease about its causes, symptoms and treatments. There are 6 chapters in this book. Chapter 1 proposes a basis for the establishment of effective rehabilitation planning. It discusses the clinical effect of 8-week rehabilitation program on physical, cognitive, and depressive symptoms and the variables influencing changes in depressive symptoms for the reduction of the psychological stress of chronic stroke. Chapter 2 provides an overview of our current understanding of cyclic nucleotide-driven protein kinase signals as essential components in arterial smooth muscle physiology and pathology underlying coronary artery disease. Chapter 3 discusses the presence of rhabdomyolysis as an adverse event after concomitant use of statins and antimicrobial agents and mechanisms involved to these interactions. Chapter 4 aims to provide the extended version of presently published content on chitosan activities towards platelet and blood coagulation mechanisms. Since we are exploring on platelet activities which involve in the coagulation process, as a new contribution to the society, chitosan-based hemostatic agents could be a new strategy biomaterial to achieve hemostasis. Chapter 5 highlights the major findings and recent advances in the study of micro-biota-dependent mechanism involved in the development of Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) and discuss important roles of probiotic bacteria and plant compounds in prevention and treatment of CAD. Chapter 6 discusses the value of heart rate in the physiopathology and management of coronary artery disease. Physiology of heart rate value is discussed, along with topics that relate heart rate to endothelial dysfunction, atherosclerosis, hypertension, and other co-morbidities that predispose to coronary artery disease. The role of inflammation and autonomic nervous system are also presented.
