Water, water resources and water resource management have become one of the most challenging non-traditional cross-border security problems for humankind today. In this anthology, based on first-hand documents, experts try to provide an insightful understanding of why the Greater Mekong Subregion is important from a geo-strategic perspective, what historical and current challenges the region faces, how great powers, including China, India, Japan and the US, are involved in the Greater Mekong Subregion, and what that region can learn from other regions with regard to water resource management.

This book presents a new approach to management in an increasingly interactive world. In this context, the use of the word “new” has two meanings. The first relates to a new definition of borders (which are natural, institutional, functional, or mixed); the second concerns the fact that the book applies (and, where necessary, develops) analytical tools, methods and models that are different from those used in other similar books. The objectives of this book are: to clarify whether existing management theories and methods can be effectively applied in an entity (which can be defined as a sovereign country, a region, a community, a culture, or a firm) as the latter increasingly interacts with the rest of the world; to develop qualitative and quantitative methods to help leaders make optimal decisions for their entity and, at the same time, to maximize the positive (or minimize the negative) effects of those decisions on the rest of the world; and to design workable cross-border cooperation plans and conflict-management schemes that allow policy-makers to better cope with the challenges and problems posed by our increasingly interactive world.

A selection of up-to-date examples from across the globe are used to support the text, including Uber’s regulatory challenges across Europe, the gig economy, employment rights after Brexit, health insurance for part-timers in the US and EU, attracting and retaining ‘millennials’, the world’s happiest and unhappiest countries, and CSR in Hong Kong. International Human Resource Management tackles the issues raised by cross-national differences in HRM styles. Specifically, it identifies a number of themes: the meaning of globalization and the extent to which it is a novel phenomenon; the challenges to national traditions; the embeddedness of actors in distinct national styles; the way in which many key issues within international HRM are contested; and the extent to which change in national systems is evident. These themes underlie the treatment of the content of the book, which is split into two parts. The first part of the book examines the context of international HRM through an examination of the process of globalization and the origins of the distinctiveness of national business systems. The second part is concerned with particular issues relating to multinational companies, such as how and why they transfer practices across operations in different countries. In addition, this part tackles HR issues in international context, such as management development, pay and reward, and recruitment and selection. This book will appeal to undergraduates taking International HRM courses, those taking Masters programmes in HRM and MBA students. It may also be used as supplementary reading for comparative industrial relations courses that feature multinational companies. Tony Edwards is Senior Lecturer, Department of Management at King's College, London and Chris Rees is Reader in International Employment Relations, Kingston Business School, Kingston University.

Natural resources often stretch across borders that separate modern nation states. This can create conflict and limit opportunities for regulated consumption of their goods and services, but also provide opportunities for joint multinational efforts that exceed single country capabilities. This book illustrates the diversity of transborder natural resources, the pressures that they experience or the opportunities that exist for multinational regulatory regimes, monitoring and enforcement. It presents ten case studies of transborder natural resources that are of interest to two or more neighboring countries, and that are subject to, or in need of bilateral or multinational coordinated management. The case studies include the exploitation of specific marine resources in international waters, rivers that travel through several countries and contiguous tropical forests across national borders, and where commodities, nature conservation or even territorial integrity are at stake. They are drawn from across the globe, including flood management in Western Europe, tropical forests in the Western Amazon, hydropower development in the Mekong region of South-east Asia, forest conservation in Central Africa and marine resource and fisheries exploitation in the waters of Japan, South-east Asia and Australia. Together the chapters provide a review of a wide range of transborder natural resource examples, and the diverse regulatory regimes that need to be devised to achieve successful management. An introductory chapter provides a conceptual and theoretical underpinning that can guide future research efforts on similar cases and a concluding chapter draws major conclusions and implications for related concepts and theories.

Across the world, companies are forming some of the most complex and exciting collaborations in the business world: cross-border alliances (CBAs). Yet while this offers multinational companies a way into the global marketplace, there is no guarantee of success. This book looks at the business and human resource issues arising in these complex collaborations, putting forward the case that the handling of these issues can determine the CBA's success. The book takes readers through the two main kinds of CBA - International Joint Ventures (IJV), and International Mergers and Acquisitions (IMA) - explaining how each type works and which human resource issues will arise. As well as analyzing these issues and explaining the relevant management, economics and sociological theories, this impressive text uses short end-of-chapter case studies and in depth end-of-text case studies to provide numerous practical examples. The first major textbook that seriously studies human resource issues in a CBA context, this book offers both students of human resource / international business and practicing human resource professionals alike the frameworks for truly understanding the complexities of the area.
