A genius with language, but convinced of his own ugliness, Cyrano secretly loves the radiant Roxane. While Roxane is in love with the beautiful but inarticulate Christian. Cyrano's generous offer to act as go-between sets in motion a poignant and often hilarious love-triangle, in which each character is torn between the lure of physical attraction and the seductive power of words. Martin Crimp's adaptation of Edmond Rostand's Cyrano de Bergerac premiered at the Playhouse Theatre, London, in November 2019.

Cyrano de Bergerac is a play written in 1897 by Edmond Rostand. There was a real Cyrano de Bergerac, and the play is a fictionalisation following the broad outlines of his life. The entire play is written in verse, in rhyming couplets of twelve syllables per line, very close to the classical alexandrine form, but the verses sometimes lack a caesura. It is also meticulously researched, down to the names of the members of the Académie française and the dames précieuses glimpsed before the performance in the first scene.

'Better to bear each day, to laugh and cry and sing and go my way freely, to think nothing of my name, to journey only, though the journey be O halfway to the moon! Swordsman, Philosopher, Poet, Raconteur – Cyrano de Bergerac is all these things, but none of them makes him happy. What he desires above all is the love of the beautiful Roxane. But his problem is as plain as the nose on his face. Surely he is too ugly ever to be loved? Salvation of a kind arrives in the form of the handsome yet tongue-tied Christian de Neuvillette – might not Cyrano’s eloquence and Christian’s beauty together win Roxane? Yet duelling foes, powerful rivals, and a war against Spain will all put our hero to the test before he finds his way at last into his lady’s arms.

France's best tale of love and panache, retold for children Cyrano de Bergerac is in possession of a cadet-position in the French Army, a poet's soul and a very, very large nose. He is also in love with Roxane, but believes himself too ugly to be loved by her in turn. When the handsome but unpoetic new cadet Christian de Neuvillette himself falls for the beautiful Roxane, he asks Cyrano to help him win her heart ... Dave Eggers says, of the series: "I couldn't be prouder to be a part of it. Ever since Alessandro conceived this idea I thought it was brilliant. The editions that they've complied have been lushly illustrated and elegantly designed."

This is the first full-length biography of Edmond Rostand in English. It relates the poet's life to his work, showing how Rostand expressed his own character and ideals in his heroes, especially Cyrano. The book throws new light on the origins of Rostand's most famous play, and introduces readers to his other plays, such as Chantecler, thought by many to be his masterpiece. Written for the non-specialist, but with much to offer to specialists too, it portrays Rostand as a sensitive, modest man, who found his sudden fame hard to bear. In spite of periods of depression, however, he continued to write, hoping to continue to inspire the French public with his own idealistic attitude to life through his plays and poetry. Until now, little has been available in English about Edmond Rostand and his work. The author, Sue Lloyd, BA, M.Phil, hopes to inspire non-French speakers with her own enthusiasm for Rostand and his plays. She is best-known for her major new editions of Roget's Thesaurus (Longman, 1982; Penguin, 1984), but has also contributed to various dictionaries, and given talks about words on the BBC World Service. She has also worked in schools in East Africa as a language teache
