We've all been there: We know we must talk to a colleague, our boss or even a friend about something we know will be at least uncomfortable and at worst explosive. So we repeatedly mull it over until we can no longer put it off, and then finally stumble through a confrontation when we could have had a conversation. Difficult Conversations is the definitive work on handling these unpleasant exchanges, based on 15 years of research at the Harvard Negotiation Project. It teaches us to work through them by understand that we're not engaging in one dialogue but three: the "what happened" conversation (what do we believe was said and done), the "feelings" conversation (the emotional impact on everyone involved), and the "identity" conversation (what does this mean for everyone's opinion of themselves). In a world where asking for a pay rise, saying 'no' to your boss, asking a favour or apologizing for a mistake can be a horrendous nightmare, Difficult Conversations deserves its position as a business classic.

Difficult conversations just got easier How do you deal professionally with a colleague whose work is seriously below standard? A supplier who is always late? Saying 'no' graciously? Giving someone bad news? Many of us have been on the receiving end of business conversations that have been badly handled, poorly timed or scarcely prepared for by the person we're talking to. This practical book offers help to new and aspiring managers in a variety of business situations, such as delivering bad news in an appraisal, and how to work with a range of colleagues who may be lazy, negative orincompetent. Whether you choose to read it in a week or in a single sitting, Difficult Conversations In A Week is your fastest route to success: - Sunday: Why are some conversations difficult? We may tend to avoid difficult conversations: how else can you deal with them? - Monday: Manage your emotions Distinguish the facts of an incident and how colleagues feel about it and their sense of identity. - Tuesday: Prepare well The venue, atmosphere and timing of a difficult conversation are all important. It is essential that you prepare well, especially your opening words and the direction that you want the conversation to go in, including alternative ways to resolve the issue. - Wednesday: Listen carefully As you listen, you discover more about your colleague's background and motivation. You also need to learn how to ask incisive questions that get to the root of an issue. - Thursday: Treat colleagues with respect In a difficult conversation, you need to affirm your colleague and continue to listen until they feel heard. You will explain your point of view politely, yet firmly, being neither passive nor aggressive in tone. - Friday: Seek change Involve colleagues in a conversation; learn how to deal with certain kinds of colleagues, for example, those who are lazy, aggressive or shy. - Saturday: Build trusting relationships Work hard to develop strong working relationships, so that when you have to have a difficult conversation, you will be better placed to do sobecause you will know the person better.

Would you be happy if you could kill your anxiety, confidently ask for what you want, and get it? Would your life be better if you could speak your mind and confront others without fear? Of course! Women tend to avoid conflict and make fewer requests for themselves than men because they intuitively know that the strategies that work for men backfire for women: an assertive man is admired, but an assertive woman is considered bossy; when a man protects his turf he’s a committed leader, but if a woman does the same she’s a control freak; and when a man and a woman express the same type of negative emotions with the same intensity, she’s considered “too emotional,” while he might be “having a bad day.” Face Difficult Conversations with God on Your Side will help you—a Christian woman—speak up, resolve conflicts, and set boundaries in a healthy, successful, and biblical way. Rebecca Finley is a professional speaker, trainer, and award-winning and Amazon best-selling author with graduate degrees in business and communication. After 10 years of listening to the stories of hundreds of women and guiding them to improve their conflict-resolution skills, Rebecca has developed the powerful techniques you’ll learn in this book. Face Difficult Conversations with God on Your Side is a step-by-step guide full of real-life stories and sprinkled with humor. It helps women use the fundamental principles of their faith, coupled with cutting-edge scientific research, to courageously navigate disagreements. You’ll learn to · Solve your problems and get what you want applying a Christian approach · Not be judged by others as passive (weak) or aggressive (bossy), but just right · Speak you mind without fear of hurting or losing a relationship · Control your emotions and lower their defenses, so they won’t turn the tables on you · Create a script to guide you, so you know exactly what to say and how to say it during a confrontation · And much more! When was the last time you had an honest, heartfelt, yet kind and productive conversation with someone about depression, mental illness, substance abuse, pornography, premarital sex, racism, divorce, abortion, LGBT issues, or politics? Our tendency is either to avoid talking about such volatile topics at all--even with other Christians--or to go on the attack, causing rifts that do nothing to encourage further discussion or growth. If you're tired of avoiding tough conversations, if you want to be a light in a dark world but you're not sure how, Challenging Conversations is the book you've been waiting for. With straightforward answers to some of the most challenging moral issues disrupting the church, this book will help you build your confidence using three simple steps to becoming a conversant Christian. Each chapter begins with a true story, clarifies misconceptions and misunderstandings about the subject, and equips you to build rapport, ask the right questions, find points of agreement, and take the next fruitful step in the relationship. Because even if we disagree on a moral issue, that shouldn't make us mortal enemies.
