Durability analysis can be defined as the prediction methodology of safe residual behaviour after a given life time under a complex mechanical loading history in combination with a program of environmental variations. This was, and is a central problem for the reliability of structural components whatever are the basic material systems. With composite systems, combination of different materials in interaction, an integrated material structure design becomes possible. Composite materials, produced from polymer resins and high strength fibers, have the potential to be widely used in construction because of their corrosion resistance and high strength-to-weight ratio, However, such environmental factors as extreme temperature fluctuation and water absorption adversely affect the material properties of composite materials produced from polymers. Cycles of freezing and thawing temperatures magnify the effects of water absorption. For use in highway structures, composite materials must be as durable as steel and concrete. Therefore, the behavior of composite materials subjected to cycles of freezing and thawing needs to be characterized. Two commercially available composite systems, both reinforced with fiberglass and produced by the pultrusion process, were studied. One system was produced with isophthalic polyester, the other with vinyl ester. Coupons were cut from plate stock and placed in a solution of water and 2% sodium chloride and subjected to cycles of freezing and thawing. Periodically, coupons were removed and tested in flexure to failure. Flexural strength values at various numbers of freeze-thaw cycles were compared to the strengths of virgin coupons. Prior to destructive testing, coupons were tested to determine the dynamic modulus of elasticity. Dynamic modulus values at various numbers of freeze-thaw cycles were compared to virgin values. Results indicate a significant loss of flexural strength (20% 30%), rigidity, and toughness after 300 cycles. Data from dynamic modulus measurements when compared to modulus of elasticity calculations taken from load-deflection data, may not be an appropriate measure of durability for composites.

The increased numbers of bonded composite components and bonded repairs of cracked structures make knowledge of adhesive bonding crucial to aircraft design and life extension. This report covers an effort which focused on using fracture mechanics to evaluate the Mode I fracture and fatigue properties of several adhesively bonded aerospace material systems. The research concentrated on bond line cracking rather than fatigue crack growth in composite or metal adherends. Particular attention was paid to the environmental durability of bonded systems in use or intended for use on transport, fighter, and supersonic aircraft. Analysis was performed using closed-form solutions as well as finite element analyses. Results were discussed with respect to their relevance and applicability to bonded joint design. Key results include the identification of significant degradation in some varieties of bonded joints subjected to long-term isothermal exposure under hot/wet conditions. The degradation was manifested by decreased fracture toughness and fatigue threshold levels. Finite element analyses were performed on specimens with dissimilar adherends having complex geometries and thermally induced stresses in the bond line. A case study in which finite element analyses were used to relate the experimental results from this program with those of an independent project is also included. The analyses highlight the importance of using tapered adherends to avoid fatigue failures and show that typical aircraft skin stresses are below experimentally obtained threshold values for the specimen geometries investigated. Results of this study emphasize that the environmental durability of adhesively bonded joints is a key issue which must be considered by aerospace design engineers.
