WIND ECHOES. Like the falling leaf, speaks to all manner of men. In Spring, lifes spark became a flame. Then Summer winds fanned fire into an all-consuming inferno. The Autumn glows bravely on, spasmodically fed by fallen leaf and broken twig. And Now, midst deciduous starkness, a gloomy ember simmers its hissing last, beneath falling snow. Listen to the wind echoes. Feel my touch.

These are the words that filled my soul and flowed from the tip of the pen that I held tightly. These words form the poems on various topics printed in the pages of this book, Echoes from the Bayou. These poems are about topics ranging from the most mundane to the most ethereal. It is fitting that this book begins with the poem “The Rain” and concludes with “ The poem “God’s Abiding Love” I must admit, they inspired me and lifted my spirit especially during my recuperation from colon cancer. In the following pages are the expressions of a retired teacher who trying to reinvent herself through Christ Jesus in a world that she vaguely knew. Dispersed between the poems, “The Rain” and “God’s Abiding Love” are poems such as “Life,” “In My Despair,” “The Masses,” and “ Remembering Dad.” The writing of these poems were very therapeutic in helping to dispel many doubts and fears that often overwhelmed me during trying times in my life. Writing about experiences that once brought me grief now gives me joy because I now know the God of all comfort brought me through many distressful situations. The most devastating was the grief of losing the strongest and most caring person that I knew. That person was my beloved father. Now my conviction to my faith in Jesus Christ, my Savior is stronger than ever, for I truly know he loves unconditionally and will never leave His children alone. Through Him I know I can be all that He says I can be. Therefore, I must toil on until my work for Him is done. With His permission granted, I shall be all that He wants me to be. Thank you, Lord, for giving me the vision to write these poems.

Ancient Africans, perhaps around 5500 BC, established a tradition based upon truth, goodness, beauty, and other immaterial and intangible aspects of things of worth. Believing all of God’s creations were forever linked, they focused on having good relations with and behaviors toward fellow human beings and with nature – both for the purpose of reaching a heaven afterlife. Out of these concepts arose the sense of community, including the practice of no person being left behind. Echoes of Ancient African Values discusses who Ancient Africans were as a people; their genius and creative ways of thinking; their philosophical and spiritual foundations; and their world shaping achievements. Unfortunately, peoples throughout the world have failed to realize or acknowledge the fact that Ancient Africans have produced the most brilliance civilization and culture the world has ever known. This applies whether the measure is by significance, greatness, or numbers. The fashioning of such brilliance inside high morals not only transcended space and time but also designed sublime echoes. A major premise of this book is that these echoes were extremely instrumental in enabling Ancient African slaves to survive their hellish situation as well as having ongoingly contributed to the recovery of Black Americans from the effects of slavery. Numerous examples are given. Otherwise, what is stressed to all peoples in the world is that Ancient African Values contain workable answers for solving every type of problem concerning humanity.

The children's lecture and slide show of Japanese Prints was an enjoyable end to the opening exhibit of Oriental Prints and Scrolls that Sara had mounted for a northern California university's art gallery. The next day she returned to the small Oriental Art Museum in Santa Barbara, where she was a curator, to find a detective from the Pasadena Police waiting to inform her of a burglary and assault at her godparents oriental arts company and to ask her help with determining the inventory. Their investigation uncovered a pattern of complicated and frightening background facts about the people and the pieces of Ancient art that she had been surrounded with all of her life.

“Every time we raise our voices, we hear echoes.” Jo-Anne Elder, from the Foreword Through short stories, journal entries and poetry, the women in Voices and Echoes explore the changing landscape of their spiritual lives. Experienced writers such as Lorna Crozier, Di Brandt and Ann Copeland, as well as strong new voices, appear to speak to each other as they draw from a wealth of personal resources to find a way to face life’s questions and discover meaning in their lives. There is something familiar about these stories and poems — they echo those we’ve heard before and those we’ve half forgotten. Whether they search for a voice in a world where men monopolize or journey into painful memories to free the self from the past, they do not despair, they do not end. Individual entries become the whole story — an unending story of rebirth and reaffirmation. The book begins with an illuminating foreword that introduces readers to the cultural and philosophical background of many of the stories, and concludes with the reflections of scholars, writers and artists that are intended to provoke further discussion.
