Two new methods for catalyst site-isolation were studied, cross-linked reverse micelles and microencapsulated linear polymers. In the first system, cross-linked reverse micelles were shown to be nano-scale materials capable of site-isolating cobalt ions. These materials were also capable of templating and preventing aggregation of palladium nanoparticles. This thesis describes two projects that employed polymer chemistry to create functional materials. While attempting to develop amplified fluorescent chemosensors, it was discovered that sensory platforms made with crystalline small molecules suffered from problems with irreproducibility due to fluctuations in film preparation. This problem was alleviated by grafting small molecule dyes onto a polymeric backbone to harness the favorable materials properties of polymeric materials. This resulted in the construction of a mechanically robust chemosensor that displayed signal amplification comparable to that found in conjugated polymer systems. The second class of materials created using applied polymer chemistry is microencapsulated palladium catalysts. Although catalysts based on nanoparticles did not exhibit high levels of activity, the incorporation of macromolecular ligands into the capsule core resulted in catalysts with increased substrate scope. This finding has led to the investigation of the local environment inside the capsule as well as the ability to tune catalyst reactivity by altering capsule properties.
