Encouraging Pro-Environmental Behavior: What Works, What Doesn't, and Why examines the main drivers of human behavior related to environmental sustainability and how we can encourage environmental behavior change in humans. The book explores the underlying barriers and enablers of environmental behavior and outlines key theoretical advances from psychology to improve understanding. It then uses theory-based research in the development of behavior change interventions to critically evaluate empirical evidence on the effectiveness of those interventions. This book will help inform and improve the success of behavior change initiatives to mitigate climate change. Explores what influences behavior: who conserves and why Includes both theory and practice Focuses on water and energy use, food choice and travel behavior Identifies impacts of incentives and interventions

Ecoarts practice is evolving quickly as a practice. While much of it is made by individual artists working alone, artists are increasingly combining into multi-artist collectives, and collaborating with scientists, sustainability professionals, industry or the community to develop artworks with quite far-reaching effects. This book describes an extraordinary range of artistic practices pitched to encourage people to adopt pro-environmental behaviours by provoking, persuading, providing information, creating empathy for nature or by being built into sustainability practices themselves. It brings together 28 contributors who examine different roles of the arts in encouraging pro-environmental behaviour. There is a wide range of practitioners represented here, including visual and performing artists, sustainability professionals, social researchers, environmental educators, research students and academics. The contributors to this book are united in believing that the arts are vital in promoting pro-environmental behavior in the way that they are practiced, but also in the connections they make to ecology, science and Indigenous culture.

Many urgent environmental problems can be mitigated with more sustainable use of resource. An acknowledgement of which is a growing interest among policy practitioners in encouraging pro-environmental behaviour change initiatives. The effect of anthropic pressure on the environment is long known and the first pro-environmental behaviour studies date back to the middle 1970s. Despite this, the scientific literature has not yet answered several questions: what are the most suitable ways to encourage behavioural changes? What are the barriers to project implementation? What are the long run effects of behavioural change projects? With this in mind, this contribution offers a review of the existing literature on behavioural change case studies and provides a categorisation of treatments and guidelines for successful project implementation. Five different approaches have been considered: education and awareness, social influence, relationship building, incentives and nudges, which have been used in experimental studies. On balance the case studies suggest that all approaches are suitable but their selection should be based on specific objectives and target population. Interestingly, the choice of the behaviour to change is rarely discussed before project implementation. This analysis also highlights that little is known on whether behaviour change projects achieve sustained pro-environmental behavioural change over time.

The case study examines how eco-friendly behaviour can be promoted within an organisation. The University of Leicester was taken as a case study in order to understand the factors essential for the promotion of green behaviour within an organisation. These factors are identified and grouped into three categories: internal factors, external factors and behavioural factors. Once these factors were established; barriers to the promotion of green behaviour within an organisation were investigated. Two different kinds of barriers to the promotion of green behaviour within the university were found and analyzed. The importance of the necessary factors and the barriers to green behaviour within the context of an organisation are discussed in light of previous literature and primary data collected within the university.

This study is conducted for Sustainable employee taskforce. One of the goals of Sustainable employee group is to encourage sustainable behaviour on the micro level – the employees of Wageningen UR. Therefore, the MICRO2 project was drawn up to put sustainability in practice. The goal of MICRO2 is to make both employees and management aware of the environmental impact, and to support pro-environmental behaviour (PEB) in the workplace. The research objective was to identify factors that have an impact on pro-environmental behaviour in the workplace, and establish their relationship in relation to PEB. The aim of this study was to eliminate the gap in existing knowledge of pro-environmental behaviour in the workplace through literature review and empirical study.

This study explores how nudging instruments are used to encourage environmentally friendly behavior within energy consumption, waste management and resource efficiency. The study results provide very interesting examples of nudging resulting in reduced energy consumption in households due to providing real-time information, peer comparison and the use of green defaults, as well as increased and improved quality of waste sorting and reduction of food waste through changes in the physical environment. The study also presents the results of a field experiment examining how nudges can encourage consumers in a super market to choose to donate the deposit refunded from reverse-vending machines for beverage containers to an environment friendly cause. Overall, the findings of this study provide a strong case for using nudging instruments to promote more environmentally friendly behavior.

Sustainable Development is in desperate need of understanding human behaviour. Most issues that are considered vital require being tackled from the ground up. However, other fields have to be pulled in to make sense of behavioural patterns. These are Persuasive Technology, Human-Computer-Interaction, Design and Motivational Psychology. Grounding the argumentation on these schools of thought, this book argues that a smartphone game provides a wide range of capacities that can inspire individuals to make changes in their lives that multiply and become behavioural patterns that in turn have considerable impacts with regards to many of Sustainable Development’s core issues such as Climate Change, economic, ecological and financial crises. With an approach that focuses on personal wellbeing, playfulness and intrinsic motivation, individuals shall be excited for an in-game narrative that incentivises them to fulfil real-life challenges that will kick off positive, beneficial feedback. Unsustainable food systems in the United States warrant adjusting food consumption behaviors to help mitigate negative environmental impacts. To effectively influence pro-environmental (`green') consumption behaviors it is necessary to first understand purchasing behaviors. Existing research suggests that social normative influence is an important component in encouraging pro-environmental behavior. The Focus Theory of Normative Conduct provides insight as to the effectiveness of social normative influence. The importance of norm salience in affecting behavioral change is central to the focus theory of normative conduct. Injunctive and descriptive norms affect behavior in a variety of contexts, but only if they are salient. The purpose of my research is to identify which components of grocery shopping behaviors are perceived as important in lowering environmental impact and to determine what factors contribute to consumers' purchasing behaviors with regard to `green' grocery products. In this study I investigated the role of social norms and motivations in influencing `green' grocery purchasing choices. I sought to further the experimental findings of the focus theory of normative conduct by identifying the most influential, and thus most salient, norms in an applied setting. I interviewed consumers, asking respondents which behaviors are most important in the context of `green' consumption behavior. I used data from these interviews to construct a survey that contained questions about grocery shopping behavior, motivational factors, and descriptive and injunctive social norms. The survey was administered to customers at selected grocery stores in Washington State. Results indicate that social norms account for a significant amount of green grocery shopping behavior. Specifically, personal injunctive normative influence was a highly significant predictor of `green' grocery shopping behavior. Social injunctive norms were also significant, but the effect was less pervasive throughout the various `green' constructs. Descriptive normative influence was not a significant predictor. The results indicate that injunctive norms are salient in a `green' grocery shopping setting, while descriptive norms do not appear to be salient in this particular situation. Motivational factors (e.g., taste) were also salient predictors `green' purchasing behaviors. These results emphasize the importance of social norms in the context of `green' consumption behavior. I offer ways to use motivations and social normative influence in social marketing campaigns to increase `green' consumption behaviors and thereby lessen the environmental impact of food systems.

Abstract : Purpose: In response to increasing energy demand and financial constraints to invest in green infrastructure, behaviour change energy-saving interventions are increasingly being considered as a tool for encouraging pro-environmental behaviour in campus residences. This paper aims to report on a pilot programme aimed at reducing energy consumption via behaviour change interventions, variably applied in residences at Rhodes University, South Africa. Design/methodology/approach: Data were collected via structured questionnaires, energy consumption records and post-intervention programme focus group discussions. Findings: Participant residences that received a mix of different interventions in the forms of pamphlets, face-to-face discussions, incentives and feedback recorded more energy reductions of up to 9 per cent than residences that received a single or no intervention. In post-experiment discussions, students cited personal, institutional and structural barriers to pro-environmental energy-use behaviour. Practical implications: Overall, the results of this study suggest that information provision of energy-saving tips combined with regular feedback and incentives can result in energy-use reductions in university residences, which may yield environmental and economic benefits for universities, but addressing barriers to pro-environmental behaviour might maximise the results. Originality/value: Given the lack of literature on energy conservation in the global South universities, this study provides the basis for discussing the potential for using behavioural interventions in universities for stirring pathways towards sustainability.
