Endocrine Biomarkers: Clinical Aspects and Laboratory Determination covers all the pre-analytical variables that can affect test results, both in the clinic and laboratory. Biomarkers of endocrine and bone diseases are discussed from both clinical and laboratory perspectives, and the authors elaborate on the teamwork-based app+roach between the clinician and the laboratory professional in the diagnosis and management of endocrine and bone disorders. Discussions include test utilization, laboratory measurement methods, harmonization and standardization, interpretation of results, and reference intervals. Each chapter ends with a discussion of one or two relevant cases with shared opinions from both a clinician and a clinical chemist. Each chapter also includes a summary box outlining key points and common pitfalls in the use of specific disease biomarkers and tests. Focuses on the traditional, current, and emerging clinical chemistry tests for endocrine and bone diseases, along with their application in individual clinical management Presents a brief discussion of each disorder and its respective interrelationships, along with laboratory methodologies that can be used to aid in evaluation of disorders Reviews common approaches to the measurement of the relevant hormones, with a special focus on measures that require a structured clinical testing scenario Reviews novel chemistry tests as potential means of future diagnostic tests Provides an overview of the current methodology and controversies in the concept of target lipid levels, paying particular attention to the role of clinical chemistry in helping to implement population health targets

A multitude of new developments, not only in the rapidly advancing field of molecular genetics and steroid metabolism but in all traditional areas of pediatric endocrinology, have influenced the diagnostic approach in children and adolescents with endocrine disorders, thus warranting this 4th, revised and extended edition of 'Diagnostics of Endocrine Function in Children and Adolescents'. Several chapters have been revised completely and all have been thoroughly updated. In addition, new chapters dealing with the muscle-bone unit and bone metabolism have also been incorporated. The original format of the chapters, which are a combination of in-depth discussion of the diagnostic process, practical conclusions and expert advice based on extensive experience, was maintained. Easy-to-use tables and figures allow for quick reference. Flowcharts of possible diagnostic pathways lead to the most frequent diagnoses. Presenting a broad range of diagnostic approaches, test procedures, and normative data required for establishing diagnoses for a broad spectrum of endocrine disorders, this book is an indispensable reference tool not only for endocrinologists and pediatricians but also for professionals in other specialties seeking evidence-based, rapid diagnostic solutions as the basis of advice and therapy for their patients.

Global ecosystems are experiencing rapid human-induced environmental changes. The marine environment is influenced by a wide variety of anthropogenic stressors, including chemical runoff and sound pollution. While stressors may not be lethal to marine wildlife in isolation, an increase in the number and magnitude of stressors reduces individual fitness and increases vulnerability to other stressors, such as the effects of global climate change and infectious diseases. As such, it is increasingly important to understand the physiological impacts of anthropogenic and natural stressors on marine wildlife. Marine mammals are known sentinels of ocean health and provide an excellent model system to investigate the health effects of anthropogenic and natural stressors on long-lived mammals. Traditional approaches to marine mammal health assessment have limited applicability in wild populations of conservation concern as they often rely on serum, which is not obtainable from most species in situ. However, novel integration of molecular methods that can be applied to routinely collected biopsies composed of skin and blubber will expand our capacity for health assessment in wild cetacean populations and further our understanding of the mechanistic relationship between stressors and possible sublethal effects. integrated well established molecular tools in new ways in order to investigate the potential impacts of anthropogenic contaminants and environmental variation on wild cetaceans in the Southern California Bight (SCB). Combining non-targeted contaminant analysis with blubber endocrine biomarkers in chapter one provided evidence of bioaccumulation and endocrine disruption related to halogenated organic contaminants (HOCs) in short-beaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis). Higher levels of several anthropogenic and previously uncharacterized compounds were associated with lower testosterone levels in mature D. delphis highlighting the potential for reproductive effects due to exposure. Chapter two explores sources of transcriptomic variation related to sea surface temperature, geographic location, ecotype, sex, and pregnancy in SCB bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). A large proportion of skin transcriptomic expression was linked to sea surface temperature with a smaller proportion explained by sex. Additional unexplained variation was identified between geographic locations and genetic ecotype, including lower expression of immune genes within a coastal T. truncatus ecotype compared to the offshore ecotype. Chapter three further examines whether the unexplained transcriptomic variation from chapter two is related to HOC exposure in both the coastal and offshore T. truncatus ecotypes. This research identified patterns of HOC exposure and the potential effects in both ecotypes and indicated the coastal ecotype may be more vulnerable to HOC related health impacts. These findings highlight the need for additional efforts to understand the mechanistic relationship between stressors, in particular HOCs, and their physiological effects in southern California marine mammals and to identify the potential population level impacts of exposure on marine wildlife.

The field of endocrine disruption or endocrine active compounds (EACs), which is just emerging and still controversial, is comprehensively covered by leading experts in Volume 3, Subvolumes L (Part I) and M (the present volume, Part II). The major classes of endocrine active chemicals are discussed, as well as methods for their detection and their association with health disturbances in humans and wildlife. The etiology of several of the human diseases associated with endocrine disruptors, e.g. breast and prostate cancer, decreased fertility and malformations, is still poorly understood, and the current state of knowledge is presented. Since hormonally active agents appear to have the potential of both adverse and beneficial effects, the evidence of health benefits associated with endocrine active compounds in humans is also presented. Basic chapters on the mode of action of EACs and on the etiology of the associated diseases facilitate the understanding of this complex subject for non-medical readers.
