Escaping from Bad Decisions presents a modern conceptual and mathematical framework of the decision-making process. By interpreting ordinal utility theory as normative analysis examined in view of rationality, it shows how decision-making under certainty, risk, and uncertainty can be better understood. It provides a critical examination of psychological models in multi-attribute decision-making, and evaluates the constitutive elements of "good" and "bad" decisions. Multi-attribute decision-making is analysed descriptively, based on the psychological model of decision-making and computer simulations of decision strategies. Finally, prescriptive examinations of multi-attribute decision-making are performed, supporting the argument that decision-making from a pluralistic perspective creates results that can help "escape" from bad decisions. This book will be of particular interest to graduate students and early career researchers in economics, decision-theory, behavioral economics, experimental economics, psychology, cognitive sciences, and decision neurosciences. Provides a comprehensive background to the phenomena of bad decisions, considered in their economic, psychological and cognitive aspects Reinterprets existing theories and phenomena and proposes a new overview of decision behaviors by integrating mathematical and psychological perspectives Adapts model-based techniques, such as mathematical model based functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) using mathematical models of the decision process

Escaping from Bad Decisions: A Behavioral Decision-Theoretic Perspective presents a modern, conceptual and mathematical framework that explains how decision-making under certainty, risk and uncertainty can be better understood and theoretically explained. In addition, the book provides a critical examination of psychological models in multi-attribute decision-making and evaluates and defines the constitutive elements of "good decisions" and "bad decisions." By defining ordinal utility theory relating to multi-attribute decision-making, this book re-interprets the rationality of multi-attribute decision-making based on Arrow's general possibility theorem. This book will be ideal for graduate students and early career researchers in economics, decision theory and cognitive science. Actors Michelle Pfeiffer, Glenn Close, Rose McGowan and Leah Remini. Humorist Garrison Keillor. Musician Lisa Marie Presley. WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. Each of these well-know people has more than fame in common; each was born or raised in a cult. We think of cults as bizarre, inexplicable, or otherworldly places that only strange people inhabit, but cults and other abusive and high-demand groups (and relationships) are actually quite commonplace. In fact, the behaviors, social pressures, and authoritarian structures that create cults exist to a greater or lesser extent in every human relationship and every human group. Cult behavior is human behavior – and by studying cults, we can learn remarkably useful things about the social world and our place in it In the first in-depth research of its kind, sociologist and cult expert Janja Lalich interviewed sixty-five people who were born in or grew up in thirty-nine different cultic groups spanning more than a dozen countries. What’s especially interesting about these individuals is that they each left the cult on their own, without outside help or internal support. In Escaping Utopia: Growing Up in a Cult, Getting Out, and Starting Over, Lalich and award-winning author (and fellow cult survivor) Karla McLaren craft Lalich’s original and groundbreaking research into an accessible and engaging book, the first of its kind focusing on this particular population. Lalich and McLaren explore fundamental questions about human nature, human development, group dynamics, abuse and control, and triumphs of the human spirit in the face of intense and extended suffering.

When Fallyn O’Keefe breaks away from her overbearing brothers to open a bakery on her own, she thinks her biggest problem will be defending her storefront from the violence of the rival family. After all, how could it be worse than that? Fallyn soon learns how bad things can get when Vince, the older, terrifying head from the enemy family, shows up with flowers instead of a fight. If either of their families were to get word of their burgeoning romance, the feuding between the families could escalate from fists to firearms. Vince’s family would rather see Fallyn chased back into the east end of the city with the rest of the brawling O’Keefes, but Vince has other things in mind. Caught between her family and the possibility of more, Fallyn must decide just how much she’s willing to sacrifice to keep her business, her secret love, and her life. During 1963, as the United States was yielding to the second British invasion, master painter Marc Chagall exhibited his work La Revolution in Europe, demonstrating his unique genius, a blending Russian Expressionism with French Cubist influences. Though it is almost a certainty that the chivalrous artist had no intention that fateful morning of rescuing a lady in distress on the boardwalk of Nice, their serendipitous affair would inspire him to create, perhaps, his most colorful masterpiece of all La Reine du Carnival de Nice. Fast-forward to the mid-1990's. The Berlin Wall had long since fallen, Marc Chagall had died, his painting was worth a fortune, and it was about to become the center of an odyssey, a twisting and turning saga where a murder results in freedom from a callous prison, an enchanted journey of champagne dreams and white lightning nightmares of reality, a magnetic story that would involve an international cast of interesting, sympathetic, and sinister characters. None of them seemed to know all the facts surrounding the valuable artwork, but each player intended to become wealthy. The fascinating events spanned over forty years and captivated people from three continents. Discover how the artist Marc Chagall, the last great survivor of the School of Paris, his Russian beauty, a California entrepreneur, an Ophthalmologist, a Polish ex-convict, and his gullible brother all converge in an adventure that will end when only one person finally has The Lost Chagall.

Why big government is not the problem. The Progressive government movement, founded on support from Republicans and Democrats alike, reined in corporate trusts and improved the lives of sweatshop workers. It created modern government, from the Federal Reserve to the nation’s budgetary and civil service policies, and most of the programs on which we depend. Ask Americans today and they will tell you that our government has hit a wall of low performance and high distrust, with huge implications for governance in the country. Instead of a focus on government effectiveness, the movement that spawned the idea of government for the people has become known for creating a big government disconnected from citizens. Donald F. Kettl finds that both political parties have contributed to the decline of the Progressive ideal of a commitment to competence. They have both fed gridlock and created a government that does not work the way citizens expect and deserve. Kettl argues for a rebirth of the original Progressive spirit, not in pursuit of bigger government but with a bipartisan dedication to better government, one that works on behalf of all citizens and that delivers services effectively. He outlines the problems in today’s government, including political pressures, proxy tools, and managerial failures. Escaping Jurassic Government details the strategies, evidence, and people that can strengthen governmental effectiveness and shut down gridlock.
