Coastal Zone Management: Global Perspectives, Regional Processes, Local Issues brings together a vast range of interdisciplinary data on coastal zones in a concise, yet exhaustive format that will be useful to students, researchers, and teachers. The book contains several focused sections, all of which include individual chapters written by subject experts with considerable experience in their fields of research. Each chapter presents the latest research and status of its focus, with a concluding endnote on future trends. Topics covered in the book include the sea level and climate changes, evolution of coastlines, land-use dynamics and coastal hazards mitigation and management. The global coast has faced the force of both climate hange and natural disasters, which continue to result in the loss of human life and degradation of quality of the coastal environment. Coastal Zone Management: Global Perspectives, Regional Processes, Local Issues provides the latest developments and key strategies to tackle this in a single comprehensive volume. It is an essential reference for scientists and researchers well-read on coastal zones, as well as those new to the subject. Presents a unique compilation of contributed chapters, including a focus on methodology, case studies, stategy, and policy, acting as a one-source reference for students, teachers, researchers and administrators. Discusses challenges at local levels in order to help interpret regional processes that have global ramifications. Provides a database for scientists working on research topics related to coastal zone management.

Exploring environmental changes through Earth’s geological history using chemostratigraphy Chemostratigraphy is the study of the chemical characteristics of different rock layers. Decoding this geochemical record across chronostratigraphic boundaries can provide insights into geological history, past climates, and sedimentary processes. Chemostratigraphy Across Major Chronological Boundaries presents state-of-the-art applications of chemostratigraphic methods and demonstrates how chemical signatures can decipher past environmental conditions. Volume highlights include: Presents a global perspective on chronostratigraphic boundaries Describes how different proxies can reveal distinct elemental and isotopic events in the geologic past Examines the Archaean-Paleoproterozoic, Proterozoic-Paleozoic, Paleozoic-Mesozoic, and Mesozoic-Paleogene boundaries Explores cause-and-effect through major, trace, PGE, and REE elemental, stable, and radiogenic isotopes Offers solutions to persistent chemostratigraphic problems on a micro-global scale Geared toward academic and researchgeoscientists, particularly in the fields of sedimentary petrology, stratigraphy, isotope geology, geochemistry, petroleum geology, atmospheric science, oceanography, climate change and environmental science, Chemostratigraphy Across Major Chronological Boundaries offers invaluable insights into environmental evolution and climatic change.

This book presents state-of-the-art research in carbonate sedimentology, stratigraphy and seismology, which also has a direct link with the work of Wolfgang Schlager. Part of the studies presented in this volume were written by former students, others were written by good friends and authors were invited to write a manuscript while they studied themes that were also studied by Wolfgang Schlager during his long academic career. * Overview of latest carbonate geology studies * Innovative new approaches * Direct link with the work of Wolfgang Schlager

A critical component of reservoir management is the accurate characterization of the hydrocarbon asset, called reservoir characterization. The topic of this course is the process of sequence-stratigraphic interpretation and characterization of carbonate reservoirs. The authors believe that the two disciplines are so intimately related that the sequence framework should be considered a critical piece of the integrated puzzle.

Snails belonging to the genus Littorina are the familiar periwinkles found on rocky sea shores throughout Western Europe, Scandinavia, North America, Siberia and Japan. Although common and intensively studied, new discoveries over the last three decades have revolutionized knowledge of these animals. Shells of Littorina are remarkable for their extreme variation in shape and colour, which has led to considerable taxonomic controversy. In this volume the complex taxonomy is revised, based on original anatomical studies and recent genetic research. Detailed descriptions of all 19 living and additional fossil species are illustrated by two colour plates, 63 black-and-white plates of shells and radulae, 24 pages of anatomical drawings and 19 distribution maps. The previously bewildering diversity of the shells is resolved to reveal simple, repeated patterns of intraspecific variability. These are explained in terms of life history and gene flow, adaptation to selection by predators and the physical environment, and ecophenotypic influences. Using information from the cladistic analysis of morphological characters, from the fossil record, and from published work on allozyme frequencies and DNA sequences, a detailed species-level phylogeny has been reconstructed. This, together with distributional and ecological data, reveals likely mechanisms of speciation and morphological adaptation. It is shown that the evolutionary radiation occurred largely in the northern Pacific Ocean, and that invasion of the Atlantic took place following the trans-Arctic biotic interchange during the late Pliocene.
