Extractive Metallurgy of Titanium: Conventional and Recent Advances in Extraction and Production of Titanium Metal contains information on current and developing processes for the production of titanium. The methods for producing Ti metal are grouped into two categories, including the reduction of TiCl4 and the reduction of TiO2, with their processes classified as either electrochemical or thermochemical. Descriptions of each method or process include both the fundamental principles of the method and the engineering challenges in their practice. In addition, a review of the chemical and physical characteristics of the product produced by each method is included. Sections cover the purity of titanium metal produced based on ASTM and other industry standards, energy consumption, cost and the potential environmental impacts of the processes. Provides information on new and developing low cost, high integrity methods for titanium metal production Discusses new markets for titanium due to the decreased cost of newly developed processes Covers specific information on new methods, including the chemical and physical characteristics produced

Refractory metals are a class of metals that are extraordinarily resistant to heat and wear making them more expensive to be obtained. Refractory metals are somehow rare compared to base metals. Refractory metals are particular as they can withstand very tough operating conditions. These qualities come from their particular properties rendering difficult their processing that we will describe in this book from heavy sands processing especially for titanium, zirconium, tungsten, molybdenum, vanadium, and rhenium. Some of these metals can be found together and some of them are by-products of other metallurgies like copper for molybdenum. They all share some properties, including a melting point above 2000 °C and high hardness at room temperature. They are chemically inert and have a relatively high density. Their high melting points make powder metallurgy the method of choice for fabricating components from these metals. Some of their applications include tools to work metals at high temperatures, wire filaments, casting molds, and chemical reaction vessels in corrosive environments. Roger Rumbu, Met. Titanium metal and alloys offer a great deal of opportunity to develop products and properties that other structural materials do not. Its commercial extraction and processing is difficult and costly due to the nature of its resources.

This comprehensive summary of the current state of the art of titanium addresses, in varying levels of detail, all aspects of titanium, including: basic characteristics and physical metallurgy, the extractive metallurgy, the various production processes, the correlations between processing, microstructure and properties, and all aspects of applications including economic ones. The book covers commercial pure (CP) titanium, alpha + beta and beta alloys, as well as titanium based intermetallics and titanium matrix composites. Richly illustrated with more than 300 figures, this compendium takes a conceptual approach to the physical metallurgy and applications of titanium, making it suitable as a reference and tutorial for materials scientists and engineers.

An up-dating of the extracting and refining processes used in treatment of nonferrous metals. Considers both pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical methods. Text divides metals into reactive and non-reactive, describes similarities in treatment for different metals, and details the specific process for each metal. Chapter on environment considerations covers methods used to clean and dispose of contaminated air and water. Uses both English and Metric units.
