Rethinking Face for 21st Century Mission

"For Thais, face is a fact," writes Flanders. However, "whether in theology, evangelism, or issues involving sin, salvation, or atonement, Thai Christians and missionaries alike seem either uninterested in or possibly incapable of addressing issues related to face. This glaring incongruity between the value of face for Thais and the lack of intentional engagement within the Thai Christian community is deeply troubling. "Surely, such a lack of careful attention to face is a dangerous posture. Uncritical views of face, furtively attaching to the theology of the Thai church, are potentially detrimental for its life and mission. Such seems to be an unavoidable situation without proper attention to face. Additionally, to ignore face is to run the risk of missing valuable cultural resources, implicit in the Thai experience of face, for the critical task of authentic Thai theological reflection. "This lack of engagement with face raises critical issues with which we must wrestle. How is it that such a central sociocultural issue has not been a more significant part of the Thai Christian vocabulary or experience? How pervasive are these negative attitudes regarding face? What lies behind them? Might this lack of self-conscious engagement with face have any relationship to the persistent Thai perception of Christianity as a foreign, Western religion? How should Christians understand this notion of face and how it relates to the ways we understand and proclaim the gospel?"

Organizations now need to attract, retain, and motivate teams and employees across distance, time zones, and cultural differences. Building authentic and lasting human relations may be the most important calling for leaders in this century. According to management and global leadership specialist Maya Hu-Chan, the concept of “saving face” can help any leader preserve dignity and create more empathetic cross-cultural relationships. “Face” represents one's self-esteem, self-worth, identity, reputation, status, pride, and dignity. Saving face is often understood as saving someone from embarrassment, but it's also about developing an understanding of the background and motivations of others to discover the unique facets we all possess. Without that understanding, we risk causing others to lose face without even knowing it. Hu-Chan explains saving face through anecdotes and practical tools, such as her BUILD leadership model (Benevolence, Understanding, Interacting, Learning, and Delivery). This book illustrates how we can give face to create positive first impressions, avoid causing others to lose face, and, most importantly, build trust and lasting relationships inside and outside the workplace.
Someone Else's Face in the Mirror: Identity and the New Science of Face Transplants

In 2005, surgeons in France removed part of the face from a cadaver and grafted it onto the head of a 38-year-old woman grossly disfigured by a dog attack. Three years later, in December, 2008, surgeons at the Cleveland Clinic announced they had performed the first U.S. face transplant. Although modern culture is accustomed to pushing medicine and the human body beyond all limits, the world's first partial face transplant and the seven that have followed have caused a stir that still reverberates globally. This book begins with the story of Isabelle Dinoire, the recipient of the first face transplant, and chronicles her surgery and battles with tissue rejection. Its scope widens with a look at how surgical teams, including three U.S. transplant teams, are in a global race to perform the first full face transplant, and at how medical history has led up to this point—with prior successful transplants ranging from body parts as simple as cornea to those as neurologically complicated as the heart, a hand, and a penis. The most novel among these surgeries—the face transplant—conjures up particular and expansive psychological issues. Authors Bluhm and Clendenin show how transplant recipients struggle with functional issues including a lifetime of anti-rejection drugs, a danger highlighted by the recent death of the second face transplant patient, in China. But just as challenging in the case of face transplant is the psychological effect on—and potential threat to—identity. Who are you, if suddenly your face—or a significant portion of it—is not what you were born with? What is it like to look in the mirror, and see a face that is not the one you have always had? Dinoire lamented, "It will never be me." That statement is an absolute simplification of the identity issues a face transplant can create, explain the authors. Bluhm and Clendenin show how, across history and media, humankind—via medicine, literature, film, and other media—has dreamed of a day when face transplants would be possible. With so many disfigurements occurring among the military in Iraq, and experimental face transplants too expensive for implementation in the private sector, it is likely that the U.S. military will take the reins and further face transplant techniques as quickly as possible to serve injured personnel.

Face recognition has received substantial attention from researchers in biometrics, computer vision, pattern recognition, and cognitive psychology communities because of the increased attention being devoted to security, man-machine communication, content-based image retrieval, and image/video coding. We have proposed two automated recognition paradigms to advance face recognition technology. Three major tasks involved in face recognition systems are: (i) face detection, (ii) face modeling, and (iii) face matching. We have developed a face detection algorithm for color images in the presence of various lighting conditions as well as complex backgrounds. Our detection method first corrects the color bias by a lighting compensation technique that automatically estimates the parameters of reference white for color correction. We overcame the difficulty of detecting the low-luma and high-luma skin tones by applying a nonlinear transformation to the Y CbCr color space. Our method generates face candidates based on the spatial arrangement of detected skin patches. We constructed eye, mouth, and face boundary maps to verify each face candidate. Experimental results demonstrate successful detection of faces with different sizes, color, position, scale, orientation, 3D pose, and expression in several photo collections. 3D human face models augment the appearance-based face recognition approaches to assist face recognition under the illumination and head pose variations. For the two proposed recognition paradigms, we have designed two methods for modeling human faces based on (i) a generic 3D face model and an individual's facial measurements of shape and texture captured in the frontal view, and (ii) alignment of a semantic face graph, derived from a generic 3D face model, onto a frontal face image.

"This powerful account of the oppression of women in much of the Arab world remains as shocking today as when it was first published, more than a quarter of a century ago. Nawal El Saadawi writes out of a powerful sense of the violence and injustice which permeated her society. Her experiences working as a doctor in villages around Egypt, witnessing prostitution, honour killings and sexual abuse, including female circumcision, drove her to give voice to this suffering. This book explores the causes of the situation through a discussion of the historical role of Arab women in religion and literature. Saadawi argues that the veil, polygamy and legal inequality are incompatible with the essence of Islam or any human faith."--P. [4] of cover.

This speech was given by the Acting Comptroller Gen. before the Nat. Defense Univ. It focuses on the DoD and the challenges it faces given the government's current long term unsustainable fiscal path and ongoing U.S. commitments in Afghanistan and Iraq. DoD can take steps to better position itself for the future and maximize the use of taxpayer dollars by improving its business operations. This speech also discusses how DoD can work more collaboratively with other national security agencies, such as State and USAID, to build the strong partnerships needed to adapt to the changing complexities of the national security environment. To succeed in this era of fiscal constraint, new ways of thinking, constructive change, and basic reforms are essential.
