This book has been conceived to provide guidance on the theory and design of cyclone systems. Forthose new to the topic, a cyclone is, in its most basic form, a stationary mechanical device that utilizes centrifugal force to separate solid or liquid particles from a carrier gas. Gas enters near the top via a tangential or vaned inlet, which gives rise to an axially descending spiral of gas and a centrifugal force field that causes the incoming particles to concentrate along, and spiral down, the inner walls of the separator. The thus-segregated particulate phase is allowed to exit out an underflow pipe while the gas phase constricts, and - in most separators - reverses its axial direction of flow and exits out a separate overflow pipe. Cyclones are applied in both heavy and light industrial applications and may be designed as either classifiers or separators. Their applications are as plentiful as they are varied. Examples include their use in the separation or classification of powder coatings, plastic fines, sawdust, wood chips, sand, sintered/powdered meta!, plastic and meta! pellets, rock and mineral cmshings, carbon fines, grain products, pulverized coal, chalk, coal and coal ash, catalyst and petroleum coke fines, mist entrained off of various processing units and liquid components from scmbbing and drilling operations. They have even been applied to separate foam into its component gas and liquid phases in recent years.

Commercial flow sheeting simulation software is increasingly available and is used in the early steps of process design in industry. As to this, more sophisticated and precise models based on activities instead of concentrations should be used. After an introductory chapter there is in Chapter 2 an intensive discussion of reactive phase equilibria of ionic and non-ionic solutes based on chemical potentials. Chapter 3 introduces to multicomponent diffusion and mass transfer. However, the main focus is on the reactive mass transfer on rigid and mobile surfaces where the interfacial reaction, molecular diffusion and adsorption layers are decisive. The respective extraction of zinc with a cation exchanger and of acetic acid with an anion exchanger is discussed as case studies. Since adsorption layers and surfactants have a major impact on liquid-liquid extraction efficiency, the final chapter reviews several tech niques which make use of polymeric species in an extractive process. A short review is also given on extraction apparatus and the hydrodynamics (hydraulic design, droplet populance balances) of columns. Much of the booklet is based on the PhD works of C. These devices seem simple in their operations. However I have seen a number of them fail to provide the performance required in the process. Working with consultants, their many suggestions and rules of thumb to resolve the issues, has left me with concern as to how to best approach a design for a proper operating separator. I studied the works of many Engineers and designers and collected information from all the manufacturers I worked with in designing separators for my projects. I have read and collected many articles on the subject of separator design. In 1984 I had the opportunity to accept a position with Perry Equipment Corporation in Mineral Wells, Texas. The range of designs, research efforts and field trouble shooting left me with the understanding that "rules of thumb" are useful in a limited set of circumstances. Fortunately for the industry these set of circumstances are sufficient at about 75 to 90 percent of the time. One of the tasks I was given, while in their employ, was to attempt to place a scientific approach as to why these devices proved so successful in most situations, but failed in other situations. In order to develop a better understanding of the design parameters I wanted to know the physical properties of the fluids and their effect associated with separator failures and efficiencies.
