Genome Plasticity in Health and Disease provides a fully up-to-date overview on genome plasticity and its role in human physiology and disease. Following an introduction to the field, a diverse range of chapters cover genomic and epigenomic analysis and the use of model organisms and genomic databases in studies. Specific molecular and biochemical mechanisms of genome plasticity are examined, including somatic variants, De Novo variants, founder variations, isolated populations dynamics, copy-number variations, mobile elements, DNA methylation, histone modifications, transcription factors, non-coding RNAs, telomere dynamics and RNA editing. Later chapters explore disease relevance for cancer, as well as cardiovascular, neuropsychiatric, inflammatory, and endocrine disease, and associated pathways for drug discovery. Examines the role of genome plasticity across a range of disease types, from cardiovascular disease, to cancer and neuropsychiatric disorders Adopts an interdisciplinary approach, with expert contributions across the spectrum of basic science and disease relevance to drug discovery

This unique book explores the role of retrotransposons in human health and disease. The ability of retrotransposons to affect the structure of human genes is recognized since the late 80’s. However, the advances of deep-sequencing technologies have shed new light on the extent of retrotransposon-mediated genome variations. These progresses have also led to the discovery that retrotransposon activity is not restricted to the germline - resulting in inheritable genetic variations - but can also mobilize in somatic tissues, such as embryonic stem cells, neuronal progenitor cells, or in many cancers. This book covers topics related to the effects of retrotransposon insertions, and their consequences on germline and somatic genome dynamics, but also discuss the role and impact of retrotransposons sequences in a broader context, including a number of novel topics that emerged recently (long non-coding RNA, neuronal disorders, exaptation) with unexpected connections between retrotransposons, stem cell maintenance, placentation, circadian cycles or aging.

The proceedings give insights into the host-pathogen-interaction, the evolution of pathogens as well as the action of virulence factors and toxins. On the molecular level mechanisms of genome flexibility of various pathogens and the RNA interference strategies will be presented. Aspects concerning the pathogen reservoir, the transmission of infectious agents and novel detection methods will be discussed as well as preventive and therapeutic approaches. Moreover, the proceedings also cover the political and social aspects of infectious diseases from the past to the future.

Chemical intolerance (CI) including multiple chemical sensitivity is an intriguing problem in environmental health. This volume focuses on neurobiological changes that appear to occur in individuals with CI and seeks to identify mechanisms applicable to the most common symptoms in CI involving the nervous system and to provide up-to-date information in CI in humans. This book addresses the role of tandem repeat polymorphisms (TRPs) in genetic plasticity, evolution, development, biological processes, neural diversity, brain function, dysfunction and disease. There are hundreds of thousands of unique tandem repeats in the human genome and their polymorphic distributions have the potential to greatly influence functional diversity and disease susceptibility. Recent discoveries in this expanding field are critically reviewed and discussed in a range of subsequent chapters, with a focus on the role of TRPs and their various gene products in evolution, development, diverse molecular and cellular processes, brain function and disease.

The Biomedical and Health Research Programme 'BIOMED2' was in operation for four years between 1994-98 with a budget of 360 million ECU. The purpose of the programme was to support the competitiveness of the European scientific research base by participating in cost-sharing research in four key areas: pharmaceuticals, biomedical technology, brain research and human genome research. The overall objective was to promote general health improvements and the transfer of medical research results into medical practice. This publication seeks to assess the impact of BIOMED2 and to identify lessons to be learned for future programmes.

'The Nature Encyclopedia of the Human Genome' (Nature EHG) will be the first major reference resource devoted entirely to the scientific basis and ethical, philosophical and commercial ramifications of genome research. Nature EHG will contain 1,000 articles, specially written by the world's leading experts and structured in such a way that different subsets will be useful to students, teachers, academics, researchers, and other professionals. The articles will be extensively cross-referenced and indexed and will contain many tables and illustrations. Areas to be covered include structural genomics, functional genomics, evolution and comparative genomics, genome mapping and sequencing, chromosome structure and function, population and mathematical genetics, bioinformatics, proteomics, genes and disease, behavioural and psychiatric genetics and ethical, legal and social issues.
