Stop letting anxiety run your life. If you're like one of the millions of Americans who suffer from anxiety and panic attacks every year, you probably spend too much time in your own head. Though our minds are great places to solve complex problems, they’re borderline destructive when it comes to handling fear and anxiety. The reason for this is simple: as perplexing and terrifying as it may be, fear is but a feeling, and you cannot “solve” feelings. All you can do is choose to focus on them or let them be. Unfortunately, so many of us opt for the former route, overanalyzing fear endlessly, helplessly plunging ourselves into further spirals of darkness and anxiety. Not only is this no way to live, but it’s also no way to approach fear, for until we break out of such apprehensive thinking, it will only continue to drag us down further and further. Thus, in order to alleviate anxiety, we must break free from these fear cycles. But how? That's exactly what you'll discover in this book. As you read this relatable self-help title, you'll learn: -What anxiety is and where it comes from -Why we keep perpetuating our anxiety, even when we know it doesn't serve us -Ten helpful tactics for mitigating acute episodes of panic and anxiety -How to develop an overall lifestyle of calm and inner peace Ready to get started? Then scroll up and hit the "buy now" button to grab your copy and move closer to making those fear cycles a thing of the past.

Summary of Get Out of Your Head Most people become authors for one of two reasons: Either they know a lot about a subject and want to impart their wisdom, or they don't know anything about a subject and need to learn more about it. Jennie Allen, the author of Get Out Of Your Head, is the latter kind of author. Allen struggled with anxiety and doubt for her entire life. However, she came to the point where she couldn't handle the anxiety and doubt anymore. It negatively affected her well-being and her relationships, but most importantly, her relationship with God. Allen decided that she needed to learn how to take control of her negative thoughts, and fast. She began by learning about the brain and how it works. What she found was that brain chemistry changes with every thought. There is a unique spiral that takes place with thoughts, particularly negative ones. It begins with negative emotions, such as worthlessness. This negative emotion takes root within an individual and leads to a thought. In this example, the thought would be, "I am worthless." That thought, though, is a lie, becomes a lie that we operate from, and it impacts our behavior. We may start to behave as if we truly are worthless. This behavior, then, impacts our relationships with others. Our relationships hurt when we believe we are worthless because our behaviors negatively affect others in our relationships. From there, we suffer the consequences of this spiral. We carry with us our negative thoughts and anxieties. We hear little comments about ourselves, and we internalize them. Instead of calling them the lies they are, we believe them, and we begin to act out of them. We hear someone call us stupid in biology class, and suddenly, we think we're stupid. We take that with us into other classes and work, and it becomes a part of us—even though it was a lie to begin with. The three main lies people believe are that they are unlovable, helpless, or worthless. These impact the daily lives we live and all of our relationships and behaviors. These anxieties and fears begin to feel real if we let them take root. We have to begin to recognize the battle of our thoughts as a spiritual battle. Our thoughts are not unique to us. Our negative thoughts can be the enemy trying to dissuade us away from God. When that happens, we begin to believe the lies He's told us, and we can't act in the truth. To solve this problem, we have to let go of the stronghold the enemy has on us and take our thoughts captive. What we think we become. We don't have to live with these negative thoughts taking control of us. What we think about shapes who we are, but we get to choose. We can decide which thoughts shape us and which thoughts get cast aside. We have the power to stop the downward spiral through redirection—the same way we stop bad behavior from our children. In order to take our thoughts captive, we have to recognize when we have them. One of the ways we can do this is by beginning to capture our negative emotions. When we feel them, we write them down and also write down what is leading us to experience them. Then, we can go through each thought and take it captive. We can pray about it and surrender it to God, then learn to replace it with a positive thought. When we do this, we can defeat the downward spiral. One of the tools the enemy uses is confusion. If he can confuse us by giving us lies and making us believe them, then we are wounded in our fight for Christ. There are quite a few lies that he tells. In this “unsettling and resonant novel” by the acclaimed author of Mr. Wroe’s Virgins, an orphan seeks revenge on her birth mother in rural Scotland (Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times). Having spent her traumatic childhood in and out of foster homes, twenty-eight-year-old Nikki Black has decided to finally take control of her life. That begins with finding her birth mother, Phyllis: the woman who abandoned her as a newborn at a London post office. The plan is simple. She’ll find her mother, demand the answers she’s always needed, then exact her revenge. But when Nikki tracks Phyllis down on a remote island in the Scottish Hebrides, she also meets the brother she never knew she had. Calum may be simple-minded, but he is full of stories—about his island home, and about Phyllis, the manipulative herbalist who keeps him under her thumb. As Nikki changes her plans to help Calum, all three of their lives begin to unravel in this “brooding, furiously powerful tale” inspired by Shakspeare’s The Tempest (Kirkus Reviews, starred review). “[A] caustically memorable literary shocker . . . Fans of Ian McEwan should relish this stylish, charismatic addition to Britain’s gallery of antiheroes.” —Publishers Weekly

In the present decade, "co-dependency" has sprung up on the landscape of American popular culture. Portrayed as an addiction-like disease responsible for a wide range of personal and social problems, co-dependency spawned a veritable social movement nationwide. A Disease of One's Own examines the phenomenon of co-dependency from a sociological perspective, viewing it not as something a person "has," but as something a person believes; not as a psychological disease, but as a belief system that offers its adherents a particular way of talking about the self and social relationships. The central question addressed by the book is: Why did co-dependency--one among a plethora of already-existing discourses on self-help--meet with such widespread public appeal? Grounded in theories of cultural and social change, John Steadman Rice argues that this question can only be adequately addressed by examining the social, cultural, and historical context in which co-dependency was created and found a receptive public; the content of the ideas it espoused; and the practical uses to which co-dependency's adherents could apply those ideas in their everyday lives. In terms of the larger American context, his analysis links the emergence of co-dependency with the permeation of psychological concepts and explanations throughout Western culture over the past thirty years, focusing particularly on the cultural and social impact of the popular acceptance of what the author calls "liberation psychotherapy." Liberation psychotherapy portrays the relationship between self and society as one of intrinsic antagonism, and argues that psychological health is inversely related to the self's accommodation to social expectations. Rice argues that a principal source of co-dependency's appeal is that it affirms core premises of liberation psychotherapy, thereby espousing an increasingly conventional and familiar wisdom. It simultaneously fuses those premises with addiction-related discourse, providing people with a means of making sense of the problems of relationship and identity that have accompanied what Rice terms the "psychologization" of American life. This brilliant analysis of the phenomenon of co-dependency will be of interest to psychologists, sociologists, psychotherapists, and those interested in American popular culture.
