Summary of The The Girl On The Train: by Paula Hawkins | Includes Analysis A Smarter You In 15 Minutes... What is your time worth? In what has been a massive success for first time thriller writer Paula Hawkins, The Girl on a Train is a novel packed full of suspense. Highly revered by Stephen King himself, the psychological thriller went straight in at number one on the New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2015, not being knocked off for thirteen weeks. Further praise for this book is given by Dreamworks acquiring the film rights to it, and the film adaptation will be ready for release in October this year. A first person narrative details the chilling story from the viewpoint of Rachel, Anna and Megan. Rachel finds her life wrought in jealousy, despair and alcohol abuse following the breakdown of her marriage to Tom. After being tormented by learning Tom not only had a mistress, Anna, but has now remarried and had a child with her too, Rachel plunges into alcoholism and loses her job. The pain of not being able to conceive a child with her husband herself drives Rachel to extreme lengths, taking her old route to work on the train so as not to rouse suspicion of losing her job, and also fantasize whilst passing her former married home. The story is wrought with jealousy, despair and follows many chilling twists and turns as each character's story begins to intertwine and Rachel, Anna and Megan become linked to each other, in macabre circumstances. It becomes clear that Rachel's drinking blackouts have clashed with her obsession with Megan, a woman Rachel has taken to watching along with her husband and imagining their perfect life together. When Megan is reported missing on the news, a bloodied Rachel feels she may be involved and the story becomes embroiled in police investigation and darker twists and turns. In turmoil, Rachel begins trying to find out more about Megan's disappearance and in doing so, gives herself a new focus instead of drinking. She becomes close with Megan's husband, Scott in order to try and learn more and in doing so, lies to him to get closer to him. In a horrific discovery, Megan's body is found and also was evidently pregnant. The fog of Rachel's alcohol abuse begins to clear and she recalls seeing Megan entering Tom's car, thus revealing an affair between them to his new wife Anna. Upon being confronted by Anna, Tom confesses the murder to her by the motive of her threatening to speak out about her pregnancy. In a fast paced turn of events, Tom begins attacking Rachel to silence her, but Rachel stands up for herself. She finds her strength and kills Tom with a corkscrew, with Anna helping and creating alibis to create a story of self defence. Winning numerous awards, The Girl on The Train has received outstanding recognition since its release last year. Taking the number one spot for the UK Hardback Chart for 20 weeks upon its release, this is a real achievement for British author Paula Hawkins. The book has been sold in 34 countries and widely translated due to its popularity. The story accurately written from the viewpoint of an alcoholic is chilling in its delivery and disintergration into dark crimes. Six-year-old Gretl Schmidt is on a train bound for Aushwitz. Jakób Kowalski is planting a bomb on the tracks. “Richly imagined and masterfully told, a love story so moving it will leave you breathless. And deeply satisfied.” —Tamera Alexander, USA Today bestselling author As World War II draws to a close, Jakób fights with the Polish resistance against the crushing forces of Germany and Russia. They intend to destroy a German troop transport, but Gretl’s unscheduled train reaches the bomb first. Gretl is the only survivor. Though spared from the concentration camp, the orphaned German Jew finds herself lost in a country hostile to her people. When Jakób discovers her, guilt and fatherly compassion prompt him to take her in. For three years, the young man and little girl form a bond over the secrets they must hide from his Catholic family. But she can’t stay with him forever. Jakób sends Gretl to South Africa, where German war orphans are promised bright futures with adoptive Protestant families—so long as Gretl’s Jewish roots, Catholic education, and connections to communist Poland are never discovered. Separated by continents, politics, religion, language, and years, Jakób and Gretl will likely never see each other again. But the events they have both survived and their belief that the human spirit can triumph over the ravages of war have formed a bond of love that no circumstances can overcome. “Readers will adore intrepid Gretl and strong Jakób in this story of war, redemption, and love.” —Publisher’s Weekly “Joubert reminds readers how love triumphed over the difficulties faced by WWII survivors as they navigated new boundaries, revised politics, and the old faith prejudices that defined post-war Europe.” —CBA Retailers + Resources “Right from the start, Joubert sets up a palpable, tension-filled atmosphere and visually striking landscape. Mixing factual events with fiction, Gretl and Jakob offer interesting viewpoints on the world around them.” —RT Book Reviews, 4 1/2 stars “A riveting read with an endearing, courageous protagonist . . . takes us from war-torn Poland to the veldt of South Africa in a story rich in love, loss, and the survival of the human spirit.” —Anne Easter Smith, author of A Rose for the Crown “Captivating. Emotional and heart-stirring. Joubert masterfully crafts every scene with tenderness and hauntingly accurate detail. It’s a stunning coming-of-age novel that packs emotion in a delicate weave of hope, faith—and the very best of love.” —Kristy Cambron, author of The Butterfly and the Violin and A Sparrow in Terezin “A fresh voice and a masterpiece I could not put down—one I will long remember.” —Cathy Gohlke, Christy Award winning author of Secrets She Kept and Saving Amelie “The Girl From the Train is an eloquent, moving testament to love and its power to illuminate our authentic selves.” —Sherry Jones, author of The Sharp Hook of Love

The Girl On The Train - A Comprehensive Summary Rachel July 5, 2013 Rachel is the “girl on the train” and she is riding home, looking out through window of the train, drinking gin and tonic from a can. She recollects her first holiday with Tom – the fishing villages, beaches and making love in the sand. The train often stops outside her favorite house, number fifteen. Rachel often sees a couple on their terrace and imagines them as Jason and Jess, “a perfect, golden couple.” They remind her of her past relationship with Tom. Tom now lives with Anna and their baby. Rachel stays with her friend, Cathy, who is a nice person. Nevertheless Rachel feels out of place. She is disturbed on days when she cannot catch a glimpse of Jess and Jason during her commute on the train. Tom calls Rachel later that night and tells her to stop bugging him. He tells her that Anna is upset with her calling him. Rachel never mentioned calling Tom, or maybe she’s forgotten it. To be continued...
