In 1990, spurred on by the success of his writing and his marriage to the writer Aileen Armitage, Deric Longden made a momentous move to a foreign country. Huddersfield, in Yorkshire, with its distinctive manners and customs and its wealth of remarkable characters, would surely provide him with all the material he needed for his planned book, one of the great classics of travel literature. But two years later, when he sat down to write, the major events of everyday life kept intruding: the demands of a houseful of cats, the problem of getting the cooker repaired, the memories evoked by sorting through old clothes in the wardrobe . . . Still, I'm a Stranger Here Myself is a travel book of a kind, where the most hilarious adventures can happen between the kitchen and the bathroom, and where a morning's shopping can provide enough anecdotes to last a lifetime. Once again Deric Longden demonstrates his genius for taking the most ordinary materials of life and transforming them with his own special brand of gentle, inspired humour.

Part history, part memoir, I Am a Stranger Here Myself taps dimensions of human yearning: the need to belong, the snarl of family history, and embracing womanhood in the patriarchal American West. Gwartney becomes fascinated with the missionary Narcissa Prentiss Whitman, the first Caucasian woman to cross the Rocky Mountains and one of fourteen people killed at the Whitman Mission in 1847 by Cayuse Indians. Whitman's role as a white woman drawn in to "settle" the West reflects the tough-as-nails women in Gwartney's own family. Arranged in four sections as a series of interlocking explorations and ruminations, Gwartney uses Whitman as a touchstone to spin a tightly woven narrative about identity, the power of womanhood, and coming to peace with one's most cherished place.

Quicklets: Your Reading Sidekick! ABOUT THE BOOK Bill Brysons Im a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away is an hilarious, pointed, and sometimes poignant collection of the columns he wrote for the British magazine, Night & Day. Bryson wrote these pieces in the mid- to late-nineties after he had returned to the United States from Great Britain where he had been living for the previous twenty years. Since the publication in 2000 of Im a Stranger Here Myself, Bryson has become one of the best-selling authors of the English-speaking world, and according to his official UK page, he is the best-selling author of non-fiction in Great Britain. MEET THE AUTHOR Davanna Cimino is a professional writer. He holds a law degree and is also a copy editor. He writes screenplays and poetry. He has three sons, and a Brittany named Jubal. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK In Im a Stranger Here Myself: Notes on Returning to America After 20 Years Away, Bill Bryson explores themes as various as the pleasures of living in a small town; Americans obsession with prescription and over-the-counter drugs and the sometimes bizarre television ads for these drugs; injuries inflicted by common household items (for example, bedding); the war on drugs; and the prison population. Bryson points out, in the chapter, Drug Culture, that It is an odd thing about us. We spend huge efforts exhorting ourselves to Say No to Drugs, then go to the drugstore and buy them by the armloads. Although he details the trivial (why is there a hotline number on dental floss containers? in On the Hotline), Bryson often makes social commentary, which, though trenchant, does not provoke ire; he delivers his observations with wit, and a sense of shared fallibility. Bryson tells of his quest for the lost nirvana of the America of his youth in the chapter, Room Service. He remembers, as a boy, stopping with his family on long road trips at small, cottagey, family-owned motels. In an effort to recapture that lost past, he cajoles his wife and kids into stopping at the Sleepy Hollow Motel during one of their road trips. The family desert him for the more modern, cleaner Comfort Inn across the street. Buy a copy to keep reading! From modest beginnings in Fiji, a dot in the Pacific Ocean, to the dining tables of queens and prime ministers, Bhaichand Patel's journey shows him to be the quintessential self-made man. Journalist, author, lawyer, diplomat, film critic, with a gift for mixing a potent cocktail-he has dived into every avocation with aplomb, and emerged with some great insights and plenty of stories. In I Am a Stranger Here Myself, he puts these together in a narrative that takes the reader on a roller-coaster ride all over the world-from Fiji, Bombay, London to New York, Cairo, Manila-coming to rest in the leafy environs of New Delhi's Sujan Singh Park. Traipsing through the book's pages are distinguished lawyers, judges, diplomats, journalists, politicians, authors, actors and directors-some down on their luck, others on the rise. An early practitioner of the work hard, party harder philosophy, Patel shows that life can be as difficult as we want to make it, or as much fun. As Henry Miller put it, 'Do anything, but let it produce joy'.

Next Chapter After the Last is a compilation of editorials by A.W. Tozer that helps Christians keep their orthodoxy in check. Addressing topics like death and resurrection, Tozer attacks unorthodox views of the gospel and lifts up true, New-Testament Christianity. Christians often see death just like the world does: as the final chapter. Tozer seeks to fervently correct this grave error, which is so inconsistent with the testimony of Scripture. In these 39 editorials, Tozer passionately urges believers to express great things for the afterlife, giving our hearts joy and our lives power.

"This book traces composer Kurt Weill's changing relationship with the idea of "America." Throughout his life, Weill was fascinated by the idea of America. His European works such as The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny (1930), depict America as a capitalist dystopia filled with gangsters and molls. But in 1935, it became clear that Europe was no longer safe for the Jewish Weill, and he set sail for New World. Once he arrived, he found the culture nothing like he imagined, and his engagement with American culture shifted in intriguing ways. From that point forward, most his works concerned the idea of "America," whether celebrating her successes, or critiquing her shortcomings. As an outsider-turned-insider, Weill's insights into American culture are somewhat unique. He was more attuned than native-born citizens to the difficult relationship America had with her immigrants. However, it took him longer to understand the subtleties in other issues, particularly those surrounding race relations. Weill worked within transnational network of musicians, writers, artists, and other stage professionals, all of whom influenced each other's styles. His personal papers reveal his attempts to navigate not only the shifting tides of American culture, but the specific demands of his institutional and individual collaborators"--

At the heart of Gail Mazur's The Common is the refusal to simplify what is paradoxical in our world and a recognition of the tensions in our own divided nature. These unflinching poems create a place where wisdom and foolishness, fear and courage, rage and pity, love and diffidence, naturally co-exist. Desire, ambition, devotion, and devastating loss are all subjects for Mazur's clear-eyed poems, which resonate with the contradictions between the body's yearning and the mind's acknowledgment of the consequences of our choices. In a poetry driven by unrelenting questioning, Mazur tries, in Rilke's worlds, "to love the questions themselves."
