Dodie Osteen, mother of Joel Osteen, gives readers a personal account of her extraordinary life and shares what she has learned about love, faith, and family. As the wife of forty-four years to the late Pastor John Osteen, founder of Lakewood Church, Dodie Osteen stood as a wife, mother, and first lady of the church, even when life felt anything but steady. Today, she continues to stand by her son, Pastor Joel Osteen, and the rest of their family as they lead Lakewood. In this revealing memoir, Dodie shares that her path, though glorious, has not always been easy. She shows an intimate look at such life-altering experiences as contracting polio as a child, raising 5 children, battling cancer, and losing her husband, all with the beautiful heart and sense of humor she displays to thousands at Lakewood and nationwide at Night of Hope events. While recounting her journey, Dodie offers readers meaningful life lessons applicable to their own lives.

One might say that Around the Barn is a befitting title for a book written by an author who spent his childhood living out in the country. The old barn was his iconic shelter and headquarters for playing hide-and-seek or cowboys and Indians, among the neatly stacked bales of hay. When chores were done, it was “off to the barn.” The old barn was also a perfect place for solitude, as the author found no quieter place to think and write. This thinking and writing process often resulted in his imagination working into overdrive. He shared his ideas with peers who lived around his neighborhood, and it was surprising how they adapted to his sense of imaginary logic. His ability to demonstrate multiple scenarios was quite remarkable. Also, with all the livestock available as an audience, the hayloft served as a perfect stage. Several decades have passed since then, and the old barn is long gone. The author still maintains fond childhood memories. These memories include riding to school, both to and from, on the school bus that picked him up every day; graduating from school; going into military service during the Vietnam years; attending college; and of course, the loves he made as well as the times his heart was broken. Never has the author forgotten the security of that old barn. When he speaks of the old barn, his eyes brighten up and a huge smile comes to his face. He wishes he could bring back those childhood days in order to prepare for his next production. By using poetry as his vehicle, Walter A. Wheat prods his audience into mental remembrance with reflections that were experienced in his own life. God is referred to many times as a point of reference. As a Vietnam veteran, Walter is able to give an insight into the feelings and emotions of those who have experienced the realities of war. Not without a sense of humor, Walter can also offer a suitable explanation about “how and when that big fish got away.” The poetry that was written in Around the Barn serves as an avenue to cushion those terrible times when life does not go your way. God knows that every day is not a good day. It is the author’s wish that the readers of Around the Barn strive to put their guards down and look for the true meaning of forgiveness. Let’s, all together, try concentrating on the nice things in life. Walter A. Wheat, MA

Some people say life is a journey. Others say life is hell. For author Annie B. her life has been a journey through hell one from which she emerged with physical and emotional scars. Her reward for marrying while young and trusting was years of physical abuse, including her husband killing one of their children. Strike one! Her trust in answering a loud knock at her door resulted in rape and pregnancy, but later losing the baby. Strike two! Then Annie endured suffering and treatment for breast cancer. Strike three! With strike three, there was no out for Annie B. She endured strikes four, five, and six by marrying her second husband. What he couldn't express with words, he expressed with his fists. By the time Annie was thirty, her best friends were hospital emergency room doctors and staff. But Annie emerged stronger from each and every trauma. In The Life I Was Dealt, Annie B. shares the excruciating pain of extreme abuse and the hopelessness of being trapped. Among these stories, though, Annie's perseverance, humor, and love for life shine. Despite her traumas, Annie has spent her life helping others. Her story will inspire others to fight their own demons.

Harriet Ryegate, the proper daughter of Massachusetts Puritans, is the first white woman to go far into the wilderness beyond the upper Missouri. With her husband, a Baptist minister, she seeks to convert the Blackfoot Indians to Christianity. But it is the Ryegates who are changed by their "journey into strangeness." Marcus Ryegate returns to Massachusetts obsessed by a beautiful Indian woman. For sermonizing about her, he pays a heavy price. ø Harriet, one of Mildred Walker?s most fully realized characters, writes in her journal about "the effect of the Wilderness on civilized persons who are accustomed to live in the world of words." If a Lion Could Talk reveals the tragic lack of communication that stretches from Massachusetts to Missouri and beyond in the years before the Civil War?and the appalling heart of darkness that is close to home.

“...entertaining and edifying and will inspire anyone who dreams of working in wine, or just dreams of wine.”— Brian Keyser, Co-Author Composing The Cheese Plate; Owner, Casellula Cheese & Wine “Written with great passion and rare candor, Kara Joseph’s If Wine Could Talk invites us to grapple with universal lessons of life while taking a journey into the world of wine. Part memoir, part wine education, this delightful and inspiring page-turner will keep you up way past your bedtime.” — Lisa Denning, The Wine Chef Blog Unlike most soon-to-be college graduates, Kara Joseph found something in wine she couldn't quite explain. It had nothing to do with the penny wine nights down at the local pub or the off-campus mixers. It called to her. It brought people together. The mystery and unshakable feeling that it was more than just a drink led her on a journey toward becoming a sommelier, taking on Napa Valley and New York City, and finding the answers in wine she desperately yearned to discover. Pursuing wine as her passion brought Kara adventures, struggles, and an insatiable desire to understand wine to the core. If Wine Could Talk intertwines two stories, one of a young girl's narrative molded by wine and the other being the answers to all your need-to-know wine questions. Follow Kara's story of defying limiting beliefs, choosing a challenging but rewarding path, and sharing the soul of the vine. So pour yourself a glass and dive into a tale that only an unconventional wine-filled life could create, and begin your own journey of wine discovery with an education on all the wine basics. You might even impress your friends at the next wine tasting.
