Wireless sensor network (WSN) is an ad-hoc network technology comprising even thousands of autonomic and self-organizing nodes that combine environmental sensing, data processing, and wireless networking. The applications for sensor networks range from home and industrial environments to military uses. Unlike the traditional computer networks, a WSN is application-oriented and deployed for a specific task. WSNs are data centric, which means that messages are not send to individual nodes but to geographical locations or regions based on the data content. A WSN node is typically battery powered and characterized by extremely small size and low cost. As a result, the processing power, memory, and energy resources of an individual sensor node are limited. However, the feasibility of a WSN lies on the collaboration between the nodes. A reference WSN node comprises a Micro-Controller Unit (MCU) having few Million Instructions Per Second (MIPS) processing speed, tens of kilobytes program memory, few kilobytes data memory. In addition, the node contains a short-range radio, and a set of sensors. Supply power is typically obtained with small batteries. Assuming a target lifetime of one year using AA-size batteries, the available power budget is around 1 mW. This book covers the low-power WSNs services ranging from hardware platforms and communication protocols to network deployment, and sensor data collection and actuation. The implications of resource constraints and expected performance in terms of throughput, reliability and latency are explained. As a case study, this book presents experiments with low-energy TUTWSN technology to illustrate the possibilities and limitations of WSN applications.

A novel method is proposed to estimate committed information rate (CIR) variations in typical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) wireless local area networks (WLANs) that are applied in support of industrial wireless sensor networks (IWSNs) and operate within the industrial, scientific and medical (ISM) frequency bands. The method is based on the observation of a phenomenon of which the significance has not previously been recognized nor documented; here termed the service level differential zone (SLDZ). This method, which conforms to the ITU-T Y.1564 test methodology, provides the means to set a CIR reference for IEEE 802.11a/g/n OFDM systems in terms of committed throughput bandwidth between a test node and an access point (AP) at a specific range. An analytical approach is presented to determine the relationship between the maximum operating range (in metres) of a wireless sensor network for a specific committed throughput bandwidth, and its link budget (in dB). The most significant contributions of this study are the analytical tools to determine wireless network capabilities, variations and performance in a simplified method, which does not require specialised measurement equipment. With these it becomes possible for industrial technicians and engineers (who are not necessarily information technology (IT) network experts) to field analyse OFDM WLANs and so qualify their performance in terms of Y.1564 specified service level agreement (SLA) requirements, which is a primary requirement for WSNs that are intended for use in some specialised industrial applications..

The Internet of Things has become a hugely popular field of research. This is due to the effect that the application of this range of technologies could have on an individual’s daily life. These technologies could be applied in a range of applications from the ‘smart home’ to a more connected and ‘smarter’ industrial application. The Internet of Things is a paradigm in which a range of technologies are used to provide for ubiquitous communication between nearly all objects in the world. Currently the approach has been to make use of a collection of proprietary technologies and hardware in order to provide this ubiquitous connection between devices. This focus on proprietary (closed source) hardware and technologies has come about as a result of the belief that open source hardware and software is inferior, especially for industrial use. This effect is compounded by the fact that proprietary hardware is designed to operate optimally with other hardware made by the same company. Often this technology is not inter-operable with hardware from other competing companies. Another strongly held belief is that the current range of Internet of Things devices are low resource devices with a limited range of capabilities. This belief has led to the development of a range of specialized protocols specifically within this domain to provide advanced capabilities (such as secure communication) in a form that these low resource devices can make use of. Through the course of this research it is shown that not only are the available new devices powerful enough to make use of the standard protocols that are available but that an open source approach to the design and development of the application ensures that the devices are inter-operable. This comes as a result of the fact that the development process for open source technologies is far more inclusive and built to the community standards rather than to a specific company’s specifications. Through the course of this research it is shown that open source technologies allow for a more capable and inter-operable device to be created. These open source technologies also open up the possibility of creating customized devices from a commercial-off-the-shelf devices (COTS) where devices are modified to work in the required application. The COTS approach together with open-source modular design approach also allows for the upgrading of individual technologies within the system. An example, consider that the ZigBee protocol is currently the preferred communication technology. If in the future a better performing technology becomes available a simple upgrade of the ZigBee component within the system allows for rapid upgrading of the entire system to the new standard. The transparent design, development and maintenance approaches to these new technologies also allow for a better Plug and Play approach to modular system development.

Da die Kommunikationsprotokolle für den Einsatz in einem industriellen Wireless-Sensornetzwerk erhebliche Auswirkungen auf solche Anforderungen haben können, müssen Untersuchungen über die geeigneten Kommunikationsprotokolle hinsichtlich verschiedener Szenarien gemacht werden. In dieser Arbeit entwerfen wir ein industrielles Wireless-Sensornetzwerk-Szenario und evaluieren den Overhead, der von zwei verschiedenen Anwendungsprotokollen (CoAP, MQTT) in Bezug auf zwei verschiedene mac-Protokolle (TSCH, CSMA) generiert wird, und unterschiedliche Ausbreitungsbedingungen. Die Overhead-Auswertung erfolgt anhand der erforderlichen Pakete, der Lieferquote und der Latenz auf der Grundlage eines Simulationsszenarios, welches mit einem mit ns-3-Simulator implementiert wird. Basierend auf den Simulationsergebnissen und der Messung der zur Verfügung gestellten Energie wird der energetische Overhead im Bezug auf verschiedene Protokolle und Szenarien geschätzt. Simulationsergebnisse zeigen, dass TSCH in Bezug auf Lieferquote, Energieeffizienz und Fairness zwischen den Nutzern besser abschneidet als CSMA, allerdings eine größere Verzögerung verursacht. Beim Laufen CoAP auf der Anwendungsschicht zusammen mit TSCH auf der MAC-Schicht die Lieferquote ist sehr gut, aber die Verzögerung war hoch. MQTT verursacht andererseits geringe Verzögerung aufgrund relativ kleiner Traffic-Größe, verursacht aber eine Verringerung der Lieferquote. Die Energieeffizienz für beide CoAP und MQTT ist abhängig von den Daten und Staus in das Netzwerk. Auswahl der optimalen Kommunikationsprotokolle für den industriellen Wireless-Sensornetzwerk ist abhängig von der Funktionalität des Sensorknotens, der Anwendung und das Szenario. Die Verwendung von TSCH wegen der Energieeffizienz und Zuverlässigkeit Anforderungen in industriellen Wireless-Sensornetzwerk wird empfohlen, aber wenn CoAP laufen, und die Verzögerung kann nicht toleriert CSMA ist eine bessere Wahl. Zukünftige Arbeiten sollten mehr über die TSCH-Skalierbarkeit und die Auswirkungen der Verwendung des Routing-Protokolls im Peer-to-Peer-Netzwerk untersuchen.
