The understanding of pollutant transformations, sorption and transport in soils and uptake by plants is the key to controlling contaminant movement towards groundwater and accumulation in food-chains. Some of these major processes were discussed in the first International Workshop on Pollutants in Porous Media, con vened in Israel in 1983 (pollutants in Porous Media, Eds. Yaron, Dagan and Goldshmid, Springer-Verlag, 1984). Since that meeting, research on contaminant impact on the environment expanded considerably. New mechanisms explaining inorganic pollutant par titioning between solid and solution phases in soils were proposed and tested; specific elements and specific reactions were investigat ed, and more case studies to evaluate management practice effects on drinking water quality and accumulation of contaminants in crops were carried out. The recognition that the new knowledge needs to be discussed and evaluated, and the scientific and engineering communities be updated, led the IUPAC (Interna tional Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) and IAHS (Interna tional Association of Hydrological Sciences) Water Quality Com missions to organize a second International Workshop on pollu tant behaviour in the vadose zone, hosted by the Institute of Soils and Water of the Agricultural Research Organization, Israel. In this workshop, taking place in June 1987, attention was focused on chemical, physico-chemical and microbial-mediated reactions of different contaminants in the vadose zone. This book contains selected works presented in the 1987 workshop by invited special ists from various disciplines and countries.

Injury to foliage may be visible in a short time and appear as necrotic lesions (dead tissue), or it can develop slowly as a yellowing or chlorosis of the leaf. There may be a reduction in growth of various portions of a plant. Plants may be killed outright, but they usually do not succumb until they have suffered recurrent injury. Today's marketplace is increasingly dependent on satisfying a myriad of local environmental requirement, the demands of environmental aware customers and the global voluntary environmental initiatives. Industry has made great progress in its efforts to protect the environment and has spent hundreds of billions of dollars to decrease the release of toxic substances into the environment, while also developing technologies to reduce or eliminate hazardous waste generation. Many industries taking initiatives, coupled with advances in technology, are changing the way of responding to their environmental obligations. Removal possibility of high concentrations of organic and inorganic matter from aquatic solution using "Crossflow" spiral wound nanofiltration membranes was investigated on a self-made semi-industrial pilot plant, capacity 800 L/h. Natural organic matter, ammonia ions, and total arsenic removal were examined using concentrates-waste water obtained from industrial nanofiltration plant. Nanofiltration of waste water provided conclusions that arsenic was better removed in higher organic concentration environment rather than in lower. Also, membranes removed organic carbon with high efficiency and produced drinking water quality permeate. Removal of high concentrations of total iron, manganese, calcium, and magnesium was conducted using natural groundwater with and without the presence of complexing agent. Obtained results show that molecular weight cutoff, as well as quantity and type of complexing agent, had an influence on measured parameter removal. Also, electrostatic forces influenced separation of investigated ions.

The use of Iraqi Clay Minerals (ICM) for the removal of hazardous organic and inorganic water pollutants is investigated using synthetic aqueous solutions. Four locally available clays namely, bentonite, kaolinite, porcelainite and diatomite, were purified, sampled and characterized by XRD, XRF, FTIR spectroscopy and SEM. The surface areas were determined using BET and methylene blue adsorption method. Cation exchange capacity (CEC) was estimated using the method of adsorbing an ethylenediamine complex of copper method and the modifier loading was calculated from the total carbon analysis. The four ICM together with their organically modified forms with hexadecyltrimethylammonium(HDTMA) and phenyltrimethylammonium (PTMA)were used to study their ability to scavenge phenol and some heavy metals from aqueous solutions. Equilibration time, pH effect and initial adsorbate concentration preceded the detailed extraction study.
