According to the World Trade Organization, world merchandise trade grew 30 percent between 2009 and 2016. The European Union is the largest trading block with 33 percent of the total merchandise trade by value while North America contributes to 16 percent. The two commercial blocks together trade one half of the total world merchandise. The impact of this trade on transportation planning and infrastructure development is immense and ever evolving. International Trade and Transportation Infrastructure Development: Infrastructure Development in North America and Europe examines the impact of trade agreements, such as the North American Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and the European Union Customs Union, and their relationship to transportation systems and infrastructure in member countries. It analyzes historical trade by mode, evaluating modal shifts due to trade policy and disputes, and their implications for all involved nations. The book also examines both supply and demand forces, reviewing transportation processes, and the stakeholders involved. Capacity development, funding mechanisms, and operational characteristics of each mode are detailed in relation to the policies that guide them. International Trade and Transportation Infrastructure Development studies the social and environmental implications of international trade. Recent trends and future potential regulatory changes are also discussed, with relation to upcoming infrastructure plans, project funding, and operations.

Recent years have seen considerable changes in the technology of transportation with the development of high-speed rail networks, more fuelefficient automobiles and aircraft, and the widespread adoption of informatics in disciplines such as traffic management and supply chain logistics. The contributions to this volume assess transportation interactions with employment and income, examine some of the policies that have been deployed to maximize the economic and social impacts of transportation provision at the local and regional levels and analyze how advances in transportation technologies have, and will, impact future development. Due in part to the general liberalization of markets, there have been major changes in the institutional environment in which transportation is supplied; these changes inevitably affect wider economic systems and development, although in turn these changes feed back upon transportation networks. The contributors to this work develop these and other themes, from a variety of perspectives, implementing a wide range of academic approaches into their analyses. Stemming from initiatives of the Network on European Communications and Transport Activities Research (NECTAR), Transportation and Economic Development Challenges presents a body of research that exemplifies the organization's objective of fostering research collaboration around the world.

In recent years the Asian and Pacific region has seen a rapid increase in its trade and tourism that has led to an urgent need to develop interregional and intraregional transport links. In 1992 the Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) approved the Asian Land Transport Infrastructure Development project, comprising the Asian Highway (AH) and the Trans-Asian Railway, and the facilitation of land transport. Under ALTID, ESCAP has completed two projects for the formulation of the new AH network and its overall development. The first project reviewed AH routes in 18 countries and a new AH network was formulated and agreed in 1993. The second project studied and reviewed the highway routes in the Asian Republics and the AH routes in the Central Asia subregion. A regional seminar-cum-workshop, "Upgrading of the Asian Highway Routes", was organised in Bangkok in November 1998. This publication is an output of that seminar and is expected to assist in the recognising the importance of AH network development among member states and provide a strategy and guidelines for future actions on upgrading at regional, subregional and national levels.

Transport costs have been, and still are, an important component of trade costs, which are one the major determinants of the volume of trade, and thus of gross domestic product (GDP) and GDP growth. Studies show that two of the main determinants of transport costs are regulatory frameworks in transport sectors and transport infrastructure. The productivity and competitiveness of goods and services firms depends largely on access to low-cost and high-quality transport services, and those services have a powerful influence on economic growth. Countries commit themselves to increasing the efficiency of transport services, which can largely be achieved through increased competition and hence through liberalization of transport sectors. Since barriers to trade in transport services are typically regulatory in nature, this book provides a thorough discussion of international, regional, and country specific rules and regulations in those sectors. Concentrating on the EU, and Turkey in particular, it considers rules and regulations in transport sectors. It shows that economic liberalization pursued unilaterally, multilaterally, or regionally has beneficial effects for Turkey, and that the benefits from such liberalization are substantial. Furthermore, the volume shows that transport infrastructure is an important determinant of exports, and hence GDP and GDP growth.

Transportation infrastructure is one of the most pressing issues for planners and communities today. In the short term, stimulus funding is being used to create jobs and fix critical systems; in the long run, communities are struggling to determine how best to restructure transport networks to encourage better land use and to foster reductions in greenhouse-gas emissions. This report, edited by Marlon G. Boarnet, was compiled with an eye to the urgency and severity of the challenges that we now face. Some of the leading researchers, scholars, and practitioners in transportation planning put forth fresh best practices and visionary ideas. Contributors include Robert Cervero, Ellen Greenberg, Robert Puentes, Daniel Sperling, and Petra Todorovich. Also here is the discussion among three big-city planning directors—William Anderson (San Diego), Barbara Sporlein (Minneapolis), and Harriet Tregoning (Washington, D.C.)—that took place at APA's 2009 National Planning Conference in Minneapolis.

The Transportation Research Board Committee on Inland Water Transportation and the Committee on Ports and Waterways have been holding summer conferences for the past twelve years. This year they were joined by the Committees on Intermodal Freight Transportation, Intermodal Freight Terminal Design, and International Trade and Transportation, and the scope of the meeting was broadened to include the activities and interests of those committees. For the third consecutive year, the conference was co-sponsored by the AASHTO Standing Committee on Water Transportation. The joint program attracted 100 participants to hear 16 speakers in four conference sessions. The session topics included: the structural, financial and policy aspects of international trade; intermodal freight terminals and operations; port technology and innovation; and planning, development and economics of inland and coastal waterways. This Circular contains the papers presented at the conference or summaries of the papers.

This book analyses and draws policy implications from infrastructure's central role in lowering Asia's trade costs. Infrastructure is shown to be a cost-effective means of lowering trade costs and thereby promoting regional growth and integration. This book combines thematic and country studies, while breaking new ground in quantifying infrastructure's impact on Asia's trade costs. The contributors examine empirical estimates of Asia's trade costs and infrastructure's influence on those costs while also contributing to a better understanding of the region's logistics challenges. The book includes interesting case studies of rapid growth and congestion (in PRC), inland transportation challenges (India), port competition in an archipelago (Indonesia) and transportation modal switching as value-added rises (Malaysia) that are policy- and project-relevant in their own right. The analysis and policy implications in this book will be of interest to trade and infrastructure policy-makers and academics at graduate and higher levels involved in economic development or Asian studies, as well as the broader development community.
