Abstract: A study of hydrocarbon generation condition has been carried out because energy is a vital part in the world and people could not live without energy. The shale gas in Sichuan Basin and the oil shale in Green River Formation of Uinta Basin have attracted worldwide attention and explored rapidly in the past years, although there are still lots of difficulties and barriers such as complex geological background, water shortage and limited technology. In this project, the objective was to compare the hydrocarbon conditions from marine depositional environment in Sichuan Basin in Southwest China and lacustrine depositional environment in Green River formation of Uinta Basin on several different aspects including geological background, distribution characters, sedimentary environment and facies, organic geochemical features, as well as hydrocarbon generation mode and condition. Meanwhile, I will simple evaluate the potential minable reservoirs in these two places based on the implications of hydrocarbon generation. By comparison with these geological conditions, it can help us to understand the difference on marine and lacustrine source rock, and clearly know the source-reservoircap assemble in these two places. This can not only help people get some experience on hydrocarbon exploration to do the further scientific research and forecast prospect, but also guide industry sustainable development and may improve the energy structure. The Green River Formation in the Uinta Basin has may characteristics typical of an ideal shale oil resource play. It is a world-class oil-prone source rock. In nearly all parts of the basin there are many thousands of net feet of Type-l and Type-ll kerogen-rich calcareous mudstones, many intervals of which have average total organic carbon (TOC) of 5-10% or greater. In the north-central and western parts of the basin a substantial part of the formation is in the oil-generative window. Furthermore, organic maturation simulations done in this study using PRA BasinView-3D™ indicates early entry into the oil-generative window. In the northwest parts of the basin the lower Green River Formation was generating oil even before the end of the Eocene and slowing of sediment accumulation in the basin. The Green River Formation is unquestionably a superb petroleum system responsible for very large cumulative production of oil and associated natural gas, and an even larger potential oil sand resource. This DVD contains a 65-page report.

A surge of interest in the geomechanical and petrophysical properties of mudrocks (shales) has taken place in recent years following the development of a shale gas industry in the United States and elsewhere, and with the prospect of similar developments in the UK. Also, these rocks are of particular importance in excavation and construction geotechnics and other rock engineering applications, such as underground natural gas storage, carbon dioxide disposal and radioactive waste storage. They may greatly influence the stability of natural and engineered slopes. Mudrocks, which make up almost three-quarters of all the sedimentary rocks on Earth, therefore impact on many areas of applied geoscience. This volume focuses on the mechanical behaviour and various physical properties of mudrocks. The 15 chapters are grouped into three themes: (i) physical properties such as porosity, permeability, fluid flow through cracks, strength and geotechnical behaviour; (ii) mineralogy and microstructure, which control geomechanical behaviour; and (iii) fracture, both in laboratory studies and in the field.
