Launching the Imagination treats design as both a verb and a noun—as both a process and a product. Design is deliberate—a process of exploring multiple solutions and choosing the most promising option. Through an immersion in 2-D concepts, students are encouraged to develop methods of thinking visually that will serve them throughout their studies and careers. Building on strengths of the previous four editions, Launching the Imagination, 5e, is even more: •Concise. Every sentence has been refined, so that maximum content can be communicated as clearly and concisely as possible. •Colorful. In addition to full-color throughout the book, the writing livelier than that in most textbooks. Analogies are often used to expand communication, and every visual example has been carefully selected for maximum impact. •Comprehensive. LTI is the only foundational text will full sections devoted to Critical and Creative Thinking and to Time-based Design. Photo program is global, represents a myriad of stylistic approaches, and prominently features design and media arts as well as more traditional art forms. •Contemporary. Over half of the visual examples now represent artworks completed since 1970. •Compelling. Four new Applied Creativity interviews have been added to this edition. With at least four visual examples per interview, this new feature follows the process by which leading artists and designers have developed their artworks. In Chapter 5 designer Steve Quinn describes the seven-step sequence he uses in developing websites, logos, and motion graphics. In Chapter 6, Jim Elniski describes Greenhouse Chicago, an adaptive re-use home that is both highly energy-efficient and beautiful. In Chapter 7, Kendall Buster describes stages in the completion of a complex sculpture, from preliminary drawing to installation. In Chapter 8, painter Carrie Ann Baade discusses the sources of her images and four major steps in their development. Five artist Profiles have also been retained from previous editions: Illustrator Bob Dacey, painter Suzanne Stryk, metalsmith Marilyn da Silva, ceramicist David MacDonald, and composer Michael Remson. Up to eight additional interviews can be added to through custom editions. Working together, the Applied Creativity interviews and the Profiles give students direct access to a wonderful range of practicing artists and designers.

New and better than ever, Launching the Imagination treats design as both a verb and a noun - as both a process and a product. Design is deliberate - a process of exploring multiple solutions and choosing the most promising option. More than half of the visual examples represent artworks completed since 1970, and over 100 represent works completed since 2000 Compelling. Interviews with exemplars of creativity have always been an important feature of this book. Three of the best past profiles have been revised and a new profile has been added. Now inserted into the body of the text, each interview deliberately builds on its chapter content. In Chapter Five, designer Steve Quinn describes the seven-step sequence he uses in developing websites, logos, and motion graphics. In Chapter 8, Jim Elniski describes The Greenhouse Chicago, an innovative home that is both highly energy efficient and elegant. In Chapter 11, ceramicist David MacDonald describes his influences and work process. And, in the new profile in Chapter 6, artist Sara Mast describes an ambitious art and science collaboration begun in celebration of the ideas of Albert Einstein. We have also added a new feature called Success Stories. These short interviews explore connections between foundational coursework and career success. In Chapter Five, Elizabeth Nelson discusses her wide-ranging design work at the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. Jason Chin's interview in Chapter Seven connects directly to his self-designed project in the Self Assignment feature earlier in the chapter. As a freshman at Syracuse University, he completed this ambitious illustration project as the final project in a Two-Dimensional Design course. He describes his current work as a professional illustrator. Almost fifty new images have been added, representing major contemporary artists and designers including Wolfgang Buttress, Do Ho Suh, Garo Antresian, Janet Ballweg, Phoebe Morris, Alain Cornu, and Natalya Zahn.

In this volume, John E. Semonche surveys censorship for reasons of sex from the nineteenth century up to the present. He covers the various forms of American media - books and periodicals, pictorial art, motion pictures, music and dance, radio, television, and the Internet. Despite the varieties of censorship, running from self-censorship to government bans, a common story is told. Censorship, whether undertaken to ward off government regulation, to help preserve the social order, or to protect the weak and vulnerable, proceeds on the assumption that the censor knows best and that limiting the choices of media consumers is justified. Covering the history of censorship of sexual ideas and images is one way of telling the story of modern America.

"This book results from research which was begun with all the casualness, but inherent seriousness, of the nineteenth-century amateur. I had the privilege of frequent access to the archives of the International Museum of Photography at George Eastman House and began to go through the nineteenth-century photographs in a systematic way. I wanted to go beyond the clichés of the history of photography as a series of often-reproduced masterworks and to find out something about the history of seeing, or at least of thinking about, images in the nineteenth century."--Préface.

He also explains how space advocates, playing on the public's Cold War fears, convinced politicians that control of space meant control of the earth. He also contends that the gaps between expectations and reality led to public policy obligated to entertain as well as inform. 43 photos.

Newell's and Michael D. Krause's On Operational Art, captures the doctrinal debate over the evolving concept of operational art-the critical link between strategy and tactics-in the face of the new complexities of warfare and the demands of irregular operations in the twenty-first century. Consisting of fifteen original essays selected and edited by Michael D. Krause in collaboration with R. Cody Phillips, the well-organized anthology presents the collective view of distinguished military historians and scholars that operational art must be adjusted to accommodate the changing circumstances happening around the world, especially when dealing with broad coalitions and alliances in regional environments and at an international level.
