They need to follow the thieves to Shanghai, they need to call some backup to accompany them, and they need a babysitter. Fortunately, their backup consists of Clary, Jace, Isabelle, and newly minted Shadowhunter Simon. In Shanghai, they learn that a much darker threat awaits them. Magnus’s magic is growing unstable, and if they can’t stop the demons flooding into the city, they might have to follow them all the way back to the source—the realm of the dead. Three very different women, each trying to reconcile her dreams with reality, are drawn together by a hypnotic voice from the past. In a once-grand Southern California neighborhood, Linda, a New York City transplant, is panicking over the disappearance of her precocious ten-year-old stepdaughter. Christine, who has struggled to get pregnant for years, finds herself expecting a baby—just as her husband is accused of murder. And Audrey, who’s always played it safe because of her family’s history of bad luck, takes a romantic risk and suddenly finds herself facing a disaster of her own. When an old journal surfaces at a neighbor’s tag sale, the women are inexorably drawn into the life of Mala Rinehart, an itinerant Romany woman who wrote down spells and predictions in a cryptic, slanting hand. As the three women feel the pull from across sixty intervening years, they vow to discover what became of Mala. For through the worn pages, their happiness has intertwined with hers, their futures spelled out in her chants and recipes. And as they unravel the mystery of Mala’s origins, their lives transform in ways they never could have expected.

It was a mention in the New Testament by Jude that alerted David Humphries to the existence of The Lost Book of Enoch, one of the greatest examples of early Hebraic literature and part of the canon, widely known by early Christians, until the fourth century, when it was banned by the church authorities and virtually disappeared. Enoch, father of Methuselah and of the seventh generation from Adam, walked with the Archangels who took him up to heaven and revealed to him the secrets of the universe and the future of mankind. He wrote down all he saw and learned for the benefit of his son and future generations. This is the background to the marvellous Apocalyptic vision which bears his name, composed in Aramaic and Hebrew verse between 200bc and 100ad by scholars who regarded themselves as the heirs to the prophets. For 1600 years, the book was lost; then, at the end of the 19th century, an Ethiopic manuscript was discovered. This book is based on scholarly reconstruction of the greatest of the Apocalypse sagas, now available for the first time to a wide audience.

Apollonius’s Conics was one of the greatest works of advanced mathematics in antiquity. The work comprised eight books, of which four have come down to us in their original Greek and three in Arabic. By the time the Arabic translations were produced, the eighth book had already been lost. In 1710, Edmond Halley, then Savilian Professor of Geometry at Oxford, produced an edition of the Greek text of the Conics of Books I-IV, a translation into Latin from the Arabic versions of Books V-VII, and a reconstruction of Book VIII. The present work provides the first complete English translation of Halley’s reconstruction of Book VIII with supplementary notes on the text. It also contains 1) an introduction discussing aspects of Apollonius’s Conics 2) an investigation of Edmond Halley's understanding of the nature of his venture into ancient mathematics, and 3) an appendices giving a brief account of Apollonius’s approach to conic sections and his mathematical techniques. This book will be of interest to students and researchers interested in the history of ancient Greek mathematics and mathematics in the early modern period.

If you're involved in any form of Celtic Wicca or Witchcraft, or if you just want to know more about the ancient Celtic Priests, the Druids, you need The Lost Books of Merlyn by Douglas Monroe. But you're not the only one who wanted this book. After his first book appeared, he received over 20,000 letters asking for more! That's the purpose of this book. The Lost Books of Merlyn is a series of writings which have come down to us as attributed through the pen of Merlyn, or ? more precisely ? as having originally been in his keeping. Merlyn (upon whom the mythical Merlin was based) was a Druid, and the Druids were the priest-priest-initiators of their people. So this book is a reconstruction of the ancient philosophy, beliefs, and methods for personal transformation you can use today. The book is composed of three parts, each one based on old Celtic legends, in the form of a story. Why was it written that way? "Because that is the way the Druids, the Celts, would have done it ? that is the way they taught." The three sections are "The Battle of the Trees," "The Book of Pheryllt," and "The Gorchan of Maeldrew." When these stories were originally told, the people knew the meanings of their symbolism. Not so, today. Therefore, at the end of each section is a grimoire explaining the meanings and, at the same time, sharing rituals, oracles, and magical methods. You'll learn about tree oracles, Celtic signs of power, and the Druidic pantheon of deities. You'll discover how to contact Faery folk, the power of words, and charms of protection. Revealed, too, is how to make and use dowsing rods to find ley lines, and the secrets of magical dance and music. Also, you'll find out the secrets of the "Charm of Making" and the proof that it was ancient before it was popularized in a movie. This just barely scratches the surface of the book. You'll find that the wisdom here will touch you and help you on your path. Read it and learn.

If only her heart didn't lead her in treacherous directions… Making things even more complicated, Julian's brother Mark-who was captured by the faeries five years ago-has been returned as a bargaining chip. The faeries are desperate to find out who is murdering their kind-and they need the Shadowhunters' help to do it. In 1876, in a mountainous region to the west of Lake Victoria, Africa - what is today Ruwenzori Mountains National Park in Uganda - the famed explorer Henry Morton Stanley encountered Africans with what he was convinced were light complexions and European features. Stanley's discovery of thisAfrican "white tribe" haunted him and seemed to substantiate the so-called Hamitic Hypothesis: the theory that the descendants of Ham, the son of Noah, had populated Africa and other remote places, proving that the source and spread of human races around the world could be traced to and explained bya Biblical story. In The Lost White Tribe, Michael Robinson traces the rise and fall of the Hamitic Hypothesis. In addition to recounting Stanley's "discovery," Robinson shows how it influenced others, including that of the Ainu in Japan; or Vilhjalmur Stefansson's tribe of "blond Eskimos" in the Arctic; or the9,000-year-old skeleton found in Washington State with what were deemed "Caucasian features." As Robinson shows, race theory stemming originally from the Bible only not only guided exploration but archeology, including Charles Mauch's discovery of the Grand Zimbabwe site in 1872, and literature, such as H. Rider Haggard's King Solomon's Mines, whose publication launched an entire literary subgenre dedicated to white tribes in remote places. The Hamitic Hypothesis would shape the theories of Carl Jung and guide psychological and anthropological notions of the primitive. The Hypothesis also formed the foundation for the European colonial system, which was premised on assumptions about racial hierarchy, at whose top were the white races, the purest and oldest of them all. It was a small step from the Hypothesis to theories of Aryan superiority, which served as thebasis of the race laws in Nazi Germany and had horrific and catastrophic consequences. Though racial thinking changed profoundly after World War Two, a version of Hamitic validation of the "whiter" tribes laid the groundwork for conflict within Africa itself after decolonization, including theRwandan genocide. Based on painstaking archival research, The Lost White Tribe is a fascinating, immersive, and wide-ranging work of synthesis, revealing the roots of racial thinking and the legacies that continue to exert their influence to this day.

Just as that book turned Biblical scholarship on its ear by concluding that parts of the Hebrew Bible were written by a woman, The Lost Book of Paradise breaks new ground by challenging our assumptions about the world's most powerful creations story--Genesis.
